CINEMATHEQUE PRESS RELEASE -- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 16, 2012 UW CINEMATHEQUE ANNOUNCES FALL 2012 SCREENING CALENDAR PACKED LINEUP INCLUDES ANTI-WESTERNS, ITALIAN CLASSICS, PRESTON STURGES SCREENPLAYS, FILMS DIRECTED BY ALEXSEI GUERMAN, KENJI MISUMI, & CHARLES CHAPLIN AND MORE Hot on the heels of our enormously popular summer offerings, the UW Cinematheque is back with the most jam-packed season of screenings ever offered for the fall. Director and cinephile Peter Bogdanovich (who almost made an early version of Lonesome Dove during the era of the revisionist Western) writes that “There are no ‘old’ movies—only movies you have already seen and ones you haven't.” With all that in mind, our Fall 2012 selections presented at 4070 Vilas Hall, the Chazen Museum of Art, and the Marquee Theater at Union South offer a moveable feast of outstanding international movies from the silent era to the present, some you may have seen and some you probably haven’t. Retrospective series include five classic “Anti-Westerns” from the late 1960s and early 70s; the complete features of Russian master Aleksei Guerman; action epics and contemplative dramas from Japanese filmmaker Kenji Misumi; a breathtaking survey of Italian Masterworks from the neorealist era to the early 1970s; Depression Era comedies and dramas with scripts by the renowned Preston Sturges; and three silent comedy classics directed by and starring Charles Chaplin. Other Special Presentations include a screening of Yasujiro Ozu’s Dragnet Girl with live piano accompaniment and an in-person visit from veteran film and television director Tim Hunter, who will present one of his favorite films, Tsui Hark’s Shanghai Blues and a screening of his own acclaimed youth film, River’s Edge. -

VISIONS DOC LIFE AS A B MOVIE: PIERO VIVARELLI a film by Nick Vivarelli & Fabrizio Laurenti The unbridled life and kaleidoscopic filmography of Piero Vivarelli, who made Italian B-movies of all genres, wrote hit rock songs and penned the screenplay for Sergio Corbucci’s Western “Django,” adored by Quentin Tarantino, are intertwined in a portrait of an unsung postwar pop culture maverick, provocateur and revolutionary (the only non-Cuban besides Che Guevara to be given a Cuban Communist Party card signed by Fidel Castro). -

“The Kingdom Life” Mark 1:1-8 December 10, 2017 Second Sunday in Advent the Good News of Jesus Christ—The Message!
“The Kingdom Life” Mark 1:1-8 December 10, 2017 Second Sunday in Advent The good news of Jesus Christ—the Message!—begins here, following to the letter the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. “Watch closely: I’m sending my preacher ahead of you; He’ll make the road smooth for you. Thunder in the desert! Prepare for God’s arrival! Make the road smooth and straight!” John the Baptizer appeared in the wild, preaching a baptism of life- change that leads to forgiveness of sins. People thronged to him from Judea and Jerusalem and, as they confessed their sins, were baptized by him in the Jordan River into a changed life. John wore a camel-hair habit, tied at the waist with a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild field honey. As he preached he said, “The real action comes next: The star in this drama, to whom I’m a mere stagehand, will change your life. I’m baptizing you here in the river, turning your old life in for a kingdom life. His baptism—a holy baptism by the Holy Spirit—will change you from the inside out.” In the first three words of Mark’s Gospel, he wants the reader to know that Jesus brings good news. Mark is an urgent writer; somewhere, he has heard about Jesus-his life, his message, and his sacrifice for that message. Mark is afire in the years 65-70 with a burning desire to tell others his gospel truth-his good news. The first of the Gospel writers, Mark is a true maverick. -

Comunicato Stampa Alessandro Haber
Race and Trauma in the Sopranos
RCIS Working Paper No. 2016/3 The Immigrant’s Journey: Race and Trauma in The Sopranos Pouyan Tabasinejad Ryerson University Series Editor: John Shields RCIS Working Papers present scholarly research of all disciplines on issues related to immigration and settlement. However, what has not been adequately analyzed by scholars is the central role that race (specifically Whiteness and Whitening) plays within the series. By using theories of Whiteness (especially Sheshadri-Crooks’s idea of Whiteness as master signifier), Whitening, and racialization, this paper shows how Italian- Americans’ history of racialization, oppression, and eventual Whitening and deracialization expresses itself in complex ways within the series. Specifically, this paper focuses on how the trauma of historical Italian-American oppression and racialization are a constant theme within the seemingly Whitened Italian- American communities and relations portrayed in the series. This inter- generational trauma is considered in the context of historical developments in the Italian-American community and dialogue and plot developments within the series. Author Bio Pouyan Tabasinejad is a Master’s student in the Immigrant and Settlement Studies (ISS) program at Ryerson University. -
THE CINEMA of MARCO BELLOCCHIO, a Mo
Left to right: Marco Bellocchio on set, Fists in the Pocket (1965), Vincere (2009) Thursday 17 May 2018, London. The BFI today announces full details of SATIRE AND MORALITY: THE CINEMA OF MARCO BELLOCCHIO, a month-long season (1 July – 31 July) celebrating the work of the award-winning Italian director MARCO BELLOCCHIO (Fists in the Pocket, A Leap in The Dark, My Mother’s Smile, Vincere). A regular on the festival circuit including the BFI London Film Festival, and winner of awards at Berlin, Venice and Cannes, Bellocchio is still today one of the most distinguished and original filmmakers to have emerged from Italy in the 1960s. As a taster for the season, which is the first ever comprehensive retrospective of Bellocchio’s films, there will be a rare onstage appearance by the director on Saturday 23 June, when he will be in conversation at BFI Southbank with season curator Adrian Wootton. The season, which is in partnership with Istituto Luce-Cinecittà and the Italian Cultural Institute London, will also be complemented by screenings at the Ciné Lumière, offering audiences an opportunity to discover a rich, distinctive body of ambitious and beautifully realised films. Bellocchio was keen for this complete retrospective to take place in London, as he studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts in 1963-64. It was during this time that he wrote his first feature film Fists in the Pocket (I Pugni in Tasca), the remarkable debut which which takes a satirically sharp axe to 1960s Italian society, and the manners and behaviour of a wealthy family.
