GLOSSARY Note: Alternative forms of spelling—as found in travellers’ accounts and the literature—are given in parentheses wherever applicable. arati a central ritual in and often the culmination of Hindu worship. The worshipper holds a lamp and in a clockwise direction traces a broad circle in front of the image of the deity. Symbolises the illumina- tion of the deity as part of the process of darshan. amil (amal ) A Hindu Sindhi jati whose members held official positions in Sind. Most of the munshis of the Talpur Mirs and their important delegates were amils, as were civil servants in British Sind. Today some amils have entered the business sector but most are occupied in white-collar jobs. bahrano sahib the ritual that involves the carrying aloft the head of the arati thaal (a tray containing food, fruit, aakho and a mudak jo atta) on the occasion of Jhulelal chand. bania a broad term signifying a Hindu small trader, widely used in the subcontinent. bhagnaree a very small and localised Hindu Sindhi jati, originally associ- ated mainly with the foodstuffs and liquor trade. bhaiband lit. ‘brotherhood’. A term used to denote a jati of Sindhi traders, in the past mostly associated with the Hyderabad area. Most Sindworkis are drawn from the bhaiband group. The term is also used in India to mean ‘a fellow member of the caste/community’— so for instance two Rajput royals would belong to a bhaiband. bhatia (bhattia, bhatio) a trading caste of north-west India, incorporating sev- eral distinct sub-groups. Among Sindhis, bhatias are a jati as distinct from bhaiband, amil, Shikarpuri, etc. ‘Bhatia’ is also a common sur- name among Sindhis, and denotes membership of the group. bradari a patrilineal kinship unit, tracing lineage from a common ancestor. chand new moon, considered by Sindhis and by Hindus generally to be very auspicious. Chand is the day associated with Jhulelal and devo- tions directed to the god such as bahrano sahib. Cheti Chand the first new moon of the solar year, considered to be the ‘Sindhi New Year’ by most Sindhis and certainly the most impor- tant day of the calendar among Sindhis in India (possibly replaced by Diwali and to a lesser extent by Guru Nanak’s birthday among Sindhis overseas). It usually falls between the last days of March and the beginning of April. chhapru a Sindhi trading jati, originally from Karachi and today centred mainly in a few urban centres in India (notably Bombay). dalal a broker, a middleman. x gumashta a commercial agent, often in charge of running a business branch for a trader. hari a landless cultivator/agricultural labourer in Sind. hatta varnka (hat varnka, varnka, hattai, hatvanika) a secret script used by the Hindu traders of Sind, the use of which has decreased but which apparently is still extant especially in Ulhasnagar and the more bounded circles of Sindhi traders in India and possibly overseas. hundi a promissory note, finance instrument of Indian indigenous bankers. ishtadeva a ‘community god’—a Hindu deity that is associated with a par- ticular regional, liguistic, and/or caste group. Jhulelal (Uderolal, Daryalal, Amarlal) the river god, today thought of as the ishtadeva of Hindu Sindhis. Variable iconography. kothi a business firm. langar a communal meal associated with Sikhism and generally held at the end of prayers and/or worship; in the case of Sindhi Nanakpanths, prasad is distributed as part of the langar. lohana (lowanna, lohano, luvana, lohanna) a caste incorporating several trading groups originating in

    Murli Chanrai Jawhrani: Chanraiji, we welcome you. You were born in Sindh and bearing in mind your age, you must surely have some cherished memories about our holy motherland Sindh. Can you tell us about your place of birth, family and their business interests? Murli: We lived in Hyderabad (Sindh) and I was born there. It was a big joint family and we all lived together - uncles, aunts, cousins etc. Jawhrani: You must have been 20-25 years, at the time of partition, isn’t it? Murli: You are absolutely right, I was exactly twenty-five years old at the time of partition. Jawhrani: Did your family hail from Hyderabad originally? Murli: Yes, I studied at the Nav Vidyalaya School, Hyderabad. Then, I moved on to Navalrai Hiranand Academy, Hyderabad, for my matriculation. Even in those days our business was spread worldwide and we had offices in Bombay, Madras, Africa, Gibraltor, Canary Islands, West Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Panama and South America. We, however discontinued our South American business due to logistical reasons. Jawhrani: That our traders filled up steamers and set sail worldwide is something legendary. Wasn’t this almost hundred years back? Murli: More than a hundred years. Old letterheads of our company mention ‘Established in 1860’. We still have in our possession correspondence with our offices abroad, dating back to 1893. Jawhrani: Was your family as badly hit as the other Sindhi families by the partition? Murli: As I stated earlier, we had no business interests in Sindh. We had properties - mainly agricultural lands, besides our houses and offices, which we had to forego and were able to get just notional claims as compensation in India.

    81 Migration and Business: A Survey of Indian Communities in the Philippines Joefe SANTARITA Drawn from archival and library research as well as interviews and focus group discussions, this paper documents the presence of Indian communities in the Philippines. This is contrary to the popular belief that Indians in the country are either Sikhs or Punjabis only. The presence of Indian professionals lately, particularly those who are working in information technology-enabled services sector, as well as students, greatly changes the earlier perception. The existence of these communities further challenges the stereotype that Indians are solely engaged in microfinancing activities. Reality will tell, however, that a good number of Indians are owners of large-scale businesses ranging from textile production to contact centers and pharmaceutical distribution. By and large, these Indian communities and their businesses, dispersed in various provinces, have contributed to the development of Philippine society through job generation, distribution of quality but affordable drugs, and retail and wholesale services among others. Through the years, they have established communities and business networks and forged ties with Filipinos in various parts of the country. SANTARITA these two groups belong to a larger population of diasporic Indians that also includes Filipinos of Indian origin, and a small number of other Indian ethnic groups.     Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 174-193 Beyond Créolité and Coolitude, the Indian on the Plantation: Recreolization in the Transoceanic Frame Ananya Jahanara Kabir Kings College London [email protected] This essay explores the ways in which Caribbean artists of Indian heritage memorialize the transformation of Caribbean history, demography, and lifeways through the arrival of their ancestors, and their transformation, in turn, by this new space. Identifying for this purpose an iconic figure that I term “the Indian on the Plantation,” I demonstrate how the influential theories of Caribbean identity-formation that serve as useful starting points for explicating the play of memory and identity that shapes Indo-Caribbean artistic praxis—coolitude (as coined by Mauritian author Khal Torabully) and créolité (as most influentially articulated by the Martinican trio of Jean Barnabé, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Raphaël Confiant)—are nevertheless constrained by certain discursive limitations. Unpacking these limitations, I offer instead evidence from curatorial and quotidian realms in Guadeloupe as a lens through which to assess an emergent artistic practice that cuts across Francophone and Anglophone constituencies to occupy the Caribbean Plantation while privileging signifiers of an Indic heritage. Reading these attempts as examples of decreolization that actually suggest an ongoing and unpredictable recreolization of culture, I situate this apparent paradox within a transoceanic heuristic frame that brings

    Editorial The great work of Vedanta, ‘Yoga Vasishta Maharamayana’ commences with a question by a seeker by name Sutikshna, who goes to the hermitage of the great Guru Agasti in search of answers. His question is of tremendous significance. He asks, “What is it that will bring final release from the bondage of life? Is it works or knowledge? Or both?”. To this question Agasti replies, “The birds do fly in the sky with the help of both their wings; just so is final liberation achieved through both knowledge and works. Neither of the two alone can bring release. Hence both knowledge and works are requisite for moksha.” This answer is of great relevance to students of Gita who are seekers of wisdom, at the same time living active lives in the world. Yoga Vasishta affirms that the highest Truths and realizations are very much for those living here and now. The whole question is how the works are performed in the world and also what is proper knowledge. Gita provides invaluable guidance on how the works are to be performed and also on spiritual wisdom. One needs to be both a dynamic and active personality whose works excel, all done as an offering, but at the same time being an instrument of the Lord, for the Universal music to flow through. Now, what is this knowledge or Jnana? Srimad Devi Bhagavatam throws light on this matter. It says there are two types of knowledge – (1) merely sound (Shabdakam) and (2) from deep experience (Anubhava Jnanam). By mere intellectual study, all one gets is the Shabdaka Jnana or auditory knowledge.
