Among the Taiwanese, fish is considered auspicious and a sym bol of bounty. This is because the pronunciation of “fish” (yü) is similar to that of “surplus” (yü), indicating abundance and pros perity. A fish specialty, with the fish preferably presented in its entirety, is a constant fare on the dining table during special occa sions. And in the true Taiwanese tradition, this most special dish is served as the last course, something truly worth waiting for, and remembered. The mechanism by which organisms adapt to temperature in response to climate change must be determined. We sequenced the whole genomes of Sillago japonica individuals collected from different latitudinal locations along the coastal waters of China and Japan to detect the possible thermal adaptations. A total of 5.48 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from five populations revealed a complete genetic break between the China and Japan groups. This genetic structure was partly attributed to geographic distance and local adaptation. Although parallel evolution within species is comparatively rare at the DNA level, the shared natural selection genes between two isolated populations (Zhoushan and Ise Bay/Tokyo Bay) indicated possible parallel evolution at the genetic level induced by temperature. Our result proved that the process of temperature selection on isolated populations is repeatable. Additionally, the candidate genes were functionally related to membrane fluidity in cold environments and the cytoskeleton in high-temperature environments. These results advance our understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying the rapid adaptations of fish species. Projections of species distribution models suggested that China and Japan groups may have different responses to future climate changes: the former could expand, whereas the latter may contract. -

Species such as 30 m deep. Sudhakara Rao ABSTRACT The largest penaeid Indian tiger prawn, Penaeus wanodon is widely distributed in the Indian waters and forms an important fish ery with high demand in tthe export market. By virtue ojits fast growth, hardness and export demand it is cultured in about 1 lakh ha of prawn farms with an annual yield of 82850 t. As the demand is very high it is subjected to heavy fishing pressure at laa stages of life history, seeds and brooders for farm and hatchery and all others for internal and export markets. The paper reviews the work done on its distribu tion, biology and capture fisheries from estuaries and marine habitats together with its stock assessment and management measures to keep the ujild population sustainable. Introduction The Indian tiger prawn P. monodon Fabricius is the largest species among the penaeids. P"or a long time there was confusion In the identification of this species. The designation of a neotype in place of the lost original type of Fabricius by Holthuis (1949) has finally resolved the century-long confusion of this species with P. semisulcatus de Haan. Although P. monodon is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from South Africa to Southern Japan, and from Karachi to northern New South Wales, it forms commercial fisheries only in the central part of the Indo-Pacific region (Mohamed, 1970; Motoh, 1981). -

Mariculture has been contributing substantially to the global fish production in recent years. It accounted for about 29.2 per cent of world aquaculture production by value. It is a fact that India is still in infancy in mariculture production in the global scenario. Since mariculture is the only hope for increasing seafood production in the coming years, the research and development in this sector is of paramount importance. In fact, such thrust was not given in India and hence, it was felt necessary to develop viable seed production and farming technologies to develop mariculture. The R&D efforts in this direction yielded commendable results within a few years and Mandapam Regional Centre of ICAR CMFRI succeeded in captive breeding and seed production of two high value marine fishes namely, Cobia, Rachycentron canadum and Silver pompano, Trachinotus blochii for the first time in the country.
