1 Badly maintained PRoWs, stiles removed and replaced by fences, or so badly damaged they are difficult to climb. 3/18/2016 8:38 PM Some landowners seem to dislike having Public Footpaths on their property and do all they can to make life difficult for walkers.

2 As a Walker and geocacher we have come across land where right of way has been blocked off or parking for field 3/18/2016 8:09 PM access across fields not as common along road sides..

3 Litter!! Fly tipping 3/18/2016 12:03 AM

4 Dog attacks on horses. In particular @ nesscliffe 3/16/2016 9:54 AM

5 Car traffic detracts from the use of countryside - cars are very speedy compared with a pedestrian and come round a 3/9/2016 4:29 PM bend suddenly 'from nowhere'. The lack of buses into country areas on Sundays and bank holidays is a source of frustration. Open Gardens scheme gardens are only open on those days! In town (Shrewsbury) I would use my bike much more if I felt safe to do so - there are almost no cycle lanes that are wide enough and none that go the full route of where I want to go. Young people would be much more independent if they had safe cycle routes to parks across town. Something else that detracts are dogs that are not under control - they rush at me, even if they veer away at the last minute one doesn't know whether it's vicious or not. And those on leads are often on ones 12 or more feet long so the dogs can still roam into my personal space.

6 Some landowners/ tenants don't like people using the footpaths. 3/2/2016 3:32 PM

7 Footpaths that have not been maintained e.g. Muddy areas making it difficult to follow the path. Paths through farms- 2/16/2016 5:21 PM often farmers do not sign the route properly or have removed signs making the path hard to find. Also slurry on the path route!

8 Sites are starting to look neglected and uncared for. Some have some very serious health and safety issues 1/26/2016 12:50 PM

9 Paths that lead through areas of marshy ground that's quite often flooded - making it impassible without waders. Also, 1/20/2016 12:21 PM I've encountered rights of way leading through farmyards that are flooded with slurry (probably intentionally).

7 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

10 Not quote nothing. Only rai puts me off - the birds I want to survey are not then evident. And much farmland is an 1/11/2016 12:28 PM ecological desert.

11 Obvious routes that are not on definitive maps to enable 'circular routes' off road - particularly in boundary areas - 1/11/2016 12:10 PM county/national/parish

12 The above issues are all a problem to some degree in my daily walking. Some walks I cannot do due to one or more 1/11/2016 11:03 AM of these issues. The other issue I'm much more aware of now is vehicles being driven too fast on narrow lanes, leaving you little time/space to stand aside as they pass. This is happening since the lanes were resurfaced and slightly widened by the council last year. Local riders have also reported the same issue. The other issue that is offputting is farm dogs coming out on the lane when you pass and menacing/frightening your own dog. There are 2 walks I can no longer do due to this issue.

13 Bridleways which end in footpaths. 12/19/2015 5:19 PM

14 I walk a lot (2 hours a day with the dog) and find that the popular paths (such as the ) are generally 12/18/2015 9:33 AM well signposted and maintained but local paths are often over-grown. Farm gates are often secured with plenty of baler-twine making them almost impossible to open! My main obstacle is access for the dog - she's too heavy to lift over a stile and generally there is no alternative.

15 There are some poorly kept gates/stiles in our area. One right of way is blocked by a non opening gate at present. 12/17/2015 6:15 PM Some stiles are very high and not good for those lacking in some mobility. Also there is a lack of dog stiles/openings which again puts some local routes out of bounds for us. Some byways are becoming overused by 4 wheel drive vehicles (Stowe ridgeway is the worst case in point). They are spoiling this route for the majority of walkers.

16 Green lane use by 4x4 vehicles from outside the area Horse use makes some bridle ways impassible for walkers 12/3/2015 7:51 PM

17 Overgrown routes. Gates that are difficult to open/close when you are on a horse. Aggressive/ barking dogs 11/30/2015 6:30 PM

18 Inconsiderate cyclists - mainly mountain bikes - on footpaths and bridleways 11/30/2015 12:27 PM

19 Mud. I hate walking knee-deep in mud! 11/25/2015 10:03 PM

20 Despite the annual taxpayer subsidy to farmers, most of them treat taxpaying walkers very poorly. They should be 11/25/2015 3:45 PM obliged to make the walking experience more enjoyable as part of the hand-out we give them.

21 Just to amplify what I've ticked above. I am a backpacker/long distance walker and I am somewhat afraid of large 11/17/2015 11:38 AM horses. I feel they are often left in fields with no segregation from walkers. They are often inquisitive since they associate humans with being fed, which is sometimes their only interaction with humans. A single strand of electric fence would often be enough to keep walkers and horses apart, for the benefit of both.

22 Lack of riding routes Loose dogs and dogs not in close control Dangerous links between off road routes eroded or 11/14/2015 1:28 AM poorly maintained verge connections

23 The weather 11/8/2015 6:55 PM

24 I prefer to walk with a group 11/6/2015 12:43 PM

25 Inappropriate developments of housing and roads etc which damage the environment, wildlife and biodiversity. 11/6/2015 11:22 AM Shooting activity taking place close to footpaths, canals and rights of way , eg near Colemere I have witnessed large shooting parties alongside the canal and lead shot showering into the water. I think warning signs should be displayed in advance when shooting is scheduled close to footpaths and recreational areas, and there should be a more responsible attitude from those who organise these activities. Aggressive behaviour by anglers (not all of them) who seem to feel fishing rights give them exclusive access to the water margins.

26 Inconsiderate dog walkers with dogs off leads when they cannot be controlled. 11/6/2015 9:54 AM

27 Footpaths not cleared or defined by the landowner 11/5/2015 7:51 PM

28 I often find that footpaths, bridleways and other rights of way are overgrown and difficult to pass, probably through 11/5/2015 1:22 PM reduced use (for some of the reasons above perhaps?). But as both our local area and ourselves become ever more urbanised their worth in providing us with opportunity to casually engage with our natural surroundings becomes evermore important. Some minor regular maintenance (together with improvements as above) would be very helpful.

29 The poor Shropshire weather 11/5/2015 8:35 AM

30 Electric fences crossing paths 11/4/2015 6:50 PM

31 Not enough bridleways in Buildwas , to ride safely have to ride along roads to get to any bridleways, and not 11/3/2015 11:39 PM always safe with the traffic.

32 Electric fences across rights of way especially where no insulation 11/3/2015 8:42 PM

8 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

33 Although many parts of the County are very well way marked and paths well kept and maintained (well done SCC), 11/3/2015 6:47 PM there are still some path 'black spots'' where paths are impassable, even on some major paths like The Shropshire Way. Many farmers are great so this is not a general moan but there is a problem with some farms where one runs the gauntlet of snarling dogs, flooded paths, ploughed up paths, locked gates and impenetrable dense maize, peas etc. not to mention the odd bull and kicking horse.

34 The increasing conflict with mountain bikers passing walkers with no warning usually at high speed. They should be 11/3/2015 4:55 PM made to use a bell.

35 I am a keen mountain biker but am aware that other mountain bikers are not very considerate of other people using 11/3/2015 12:01 PM the outdoors and seem to think they have priority over walkers/ equestrians and livestock!

36 Difficulty of walking and cycling along country roads, speeding traffic Can't access shuttles without car 11/3/2015 9:25 AM No buses!

37 Vandalism / littering / lack of respect shown by others to the outdoors and the fact that it should be able to be enjoyed 11/3/2015 6:38 AM by everyone

38 Cycle routes in town are disjointed, often requiring me to dismount and use the pavement or else to brave the traffic. 11/2/2015 10:49 PM

39 I don't like paths that cross straight through cropped fields I would rather circle around the edge of the field. 11/2/2015 11:48 AM

40 Aggressive cyclists 11/2/2015 5:47 AM

41 Bad weather! 10/31/2015 11:22 AM

42 Bad weather! 10/31/2015 11:21 AM

43 Bad weather! 10/31/2015 11:19 AM

44 dogs not on leads and owners who do not act appropriately. 10/30/2015 2:16 PM

45 Building on green fields - I don't enjoy using rights of way which go through housing or industrial estates. 10/29/2015 7:29 PM

46 I walk every day with my dog and we cannot do some routes as she cannot get through the stiles. If we do some 10/29/2015 10:58 AM family walks the same problems arises with older family members who can no longer climb over stiles

47 When using a right of way across a field, and access is obscured/overgrown by vegetation, I'm unsure whether I 10/28/2015 7:11 PM should keep to the fence line or just walk through the crop. It doesn't seem right to do the latter. I usually just don't use the route until it becomes clearer.

48 Litter left lying about 10/28/2015 4:38 PM

49 Electrified fencing in field in Bomere Heath towards Merrington, dog had to jump fence 10/28/2015 11:01 AM

50 too many people 10/27/2015 11:05 PM

51 Mobile phones 10/27/2015 1:53 PM

52 Routes I choose are not affected by ploughing, cropping, and the failure to reinstate the public paths, but it is an 10/27/2015 1:47 PM irritant when you have to choose between taking a diversion around a field, or walking across a ploughed/cropped field. Bulls in fields have stopped me completing or even attempting an affected route.

53 other rubbish and drinks cans, and discarded poo bags 10/27/2015 10:22 AM

54 lack of linking off road riding routes impact of development in the countryside 10/27/2015 12:46 AM

55 nothing seems to be done to problem footpaths which we report to Shropshire Council 10/26/2015 10:25 PM

56 Very bad weather 10/26/2015 9:27 PM

57 Loose dogs. 10/26/2015 9:24 PM

9 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

64 Cycling on footpaths, and aggressive behaviour by cyclists towards other users which is becoming far too common; 10/26/2015 6:09 PM inconsiderate dog walkers, free ranging cattle especially suckler cows and especially continental breeds

65 Electric Fences crossing footpaths. 10/26/2015 5:37 PM

66 Over Strenous Activities. 10/26/2015 5:34 PM

67 too many other people, especially dog walkers who think everyone should like their dogs and who are constantly 10/26/2015 2:13 PM shouting at them - usually their dogs are very nice - you can't blame them really.

68 Mounting biking is becoming increasing popular in the hills - however not all abide to the rules and ignore signs which 10/26/2015 1:58 PM say no cyclists past a certain point. They can also be dangerous when coming downhill fast in large numbers and you are with a group of people or walking the dog.

69 Landowners do not respect their obligations to ensure footpaths are accessible and passable.. electric fences, stock, 10/26/2015 12:15 PM field beet all obstructing footpaths. In your list you don't put Intimidating land owners! Bullies protected by status.

70 I feel a bit confused now about some long distance paths like the Shropshire Way which have been re-routed in places 10/26/2015 12:04 PM but that change hasn't yet got through to the OS maps.

71 We have a number of footpaths in the area (); however, the farmers do tend to grow crops (fine), the problem is 10/26/2015 11:55 AM that there isn't a footpath then and walking round the edge of the field is much more strenuous. As I get older I can see this will become a problem. Some farmers create the path through the field and that is great; I wish all would. Finally, cows, their calves and dogs do not mix. I have been stampeded on a few occasions - perhaps keep those fields calf free?

72 Mountain bikers using public footpaths and other areas that they have no right to use 10/26/2015 11:19 AM

73 Land owners make you feel unwelcome, way markers removed by farmers and landowners. 10/26/2015 10:56 AM

74 Blocked footpaths and lack of action by Local Authorities is the biggest issue I have 10/26/2015 10:50 AM

75 In the area there are some very unfriendly (and some very friendly) farmers who go out of their way to 10/26/2015 10:24 AM block paths. A lot of horse people erect electric fences which also make it difficult for old people like me (77 years)

76 More dog bins required 10/24/2015 11:40 AM

22 The council have recently done some good work to link up previous no go areas for cyclists such as the road between 11/3/2015 12:01 PM and . Long distance paths are good in the area although this shouldn't be at the cost of maintaining ALL rights of way. Formal MTB routes at Haughmond would be good to help the conflict between mtb users and walkers (i am a keen walker and biker).

23 very often bridleways are badly churned up through horse usage and not very walk/foot friendly especially when 11/2/2015 11:48 AM horses are ridden to avoid the mess they are creating. It would be good if a rule of horses walk on one side of a path and walkers on the other thus as I walker I could keep my feet drier or not have to avoid certain paths.

28 I would like better accessible links around my village of cressage. There is nowhere to safely roam. Poor pavement 10/30/2015 2:16 PM links to reach walking routes. Walks for life in should provide a mothers and pushchairs walk or one for toddlers.

37 Again, you miss the obvious. I would like a footpath network that was accessilbe - by that I mean clear to walk without 10/26/2015 12:15 PM impediment such as stock or crops. The reason people don't use the footpaths is becuase they aren't clear, walkable or welcoming. Daily I come accross blockages to the Shropshire Way - how often are these paths monitored and action agianst transgressing landlowners taken.

13 I think you need to define what it is you're seeking to measure. I suspect your definition of Outdoor Provision is much 3/9/2016 4:29 PM more limited than mine. I walk to the shops and might take in the Quarry, or a bit of Frankwell, possibly some quiet streets. Other times I follow a footpath from town along the or the Severn upstream from Doctor's Field to Shelton and along opposite Berwick House. Other days I might go further away for the day to Ironbridge gorge, Pontesbury, Stiperstones, Church Stretton, etc etc.

2 btw, the reason I am more active now is that I have more time. River levels permitting I go kayaking on the Severn in 3/9/2016 4:29 PM Shrewsbury several times each week - does this activity 'count' in this survey? I suspect the Severn is not managed by Shropshire Council and therefore doesn't feature as a possible activity.

1 Better pinpointing of suitable places to park cars. Often, car parks are not marked on maps, but many places have 3/16/2016 3:26 PM suitable laybys that could be used, if only we knew about them. If I'm going to a part of the county I'm not used to, I often use Google Streetview to determine whether there's anywhere nearby that suitable and safe to park. And I know we're not supposed to use our cars, but some places don't have bus services at all.

2 Less signs & information boards 3/15/2016 4:02 PM

3 I'm not sure what the above mean. I'm not looking for organised stuff. There's loads of footpaths already there but 3/9/2016 4:29 PM many are overgrown. We need more public transport to the footpaths (on Sundays and holidays) not more footpaths to match public transport if that makes sense.

4 Keep bikes and walkers separate 3/3/2016 3:12 PM

5 Better Maintenance and protection of footpaths 3/2/2016 7:18 PM

6 more seats along walks 3/2/2016 6:44 PM

7 Friendlier farm animals. Scared to go across some fields. Have been chased by bullocks. 3/2/2016 3:32 PM

8 Not sure this should be run by the council 2/9/2016 12:04 PM

9 KEEP PUBLIC PARKS AND OPEN SPACES OPEN. DO NOT CUT THESE VITAL ELEMENTS OF SOCIAL 2/9/2016 11:26 AM INTERACTION AND MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLBEING

10 Publications may already exsist for walks in Shropshire but these could be highlighted somewhere. 1/25/2016 12:10 PM

11 encourage landowners to reinstate paths before sowing 1/20/2016 2:24 PM

12 More wildlife areas 1/20/2016 11:23 AM

13 cycle tracks to keep bikes off footpaths 1/12/2016 10:50 AM

14 Horse friendly gates on bridleways 1/11/2016 2:26 PM

15 Not applicable to me 1/11/2016 12:28 PM

16 Some longstanding route 'disputes' to be enabled. 1/11/2016 12:10 PM

17 Improved maintenance of stiles and gates. Some stiles are dangerous and too high. Some gates are jammed and will 1/11/2016 11:03 AM not open. No dog stiles.

18 more wildlife friendly areas 1/11/2016 10:53 AM

19 Nothing puts discourages me or encourages me other than a deep need to be in the countryside. More time would be 1/11/2016 10:35 AM good!

20 link walking routes with local accommodation local area walking maps , crossing os map boundaries clun valley 1/11/2016 10:28 AM walking booklet is excellent

21 Legal enquirers to be dealt with quickly, locally one lodged in 1996 still to come to an equity. 1/4/2016 5:52 PM

22 Dog poo bins 12/18/2015 3:53 PM

23 In some areas of west Shropshire there is a problem parking to access footpaths 12/18/2015 3:34 PM

24 I don't feel that info boards are appropriate everywhere - they urbanise the countryside. Fine near/on outskirts of towns 12/17/2015 6:15 PM but not in rural areas. Boards tend to get unreadable anyway after a few years in the weather. Best to have a discreet wooden box with paper leaflets if you must have something.

25 Maintaining existing rights of way, ensuring stiles are not removed and replaced by fences 12/16/2015 7:18 PM

26 better provision for wild life in the Albrighton & Donington LNR especially berry-bearing trees/shrubs, bird nesting sites 12/14/2015 10:17 AM (hedgerows) and wild flowers in the meadow

27 Please see answer in question 3. 11/30/2015 6:30 PM

28 Passing places where horses, bicycles and pedestrians have to share 11/26/2015 12:38 PM

29 Pretty satisfied with what is provided. I never leave Shropshire wishing it could be better! 11/25/2015 10:03 PM

48 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

30 Replace play facilities that have got damaged/worn out, eg at Hodnet Play Park, rather than just remove them. The 11/24/2015 8:21 PM wooden obstacle course was great but has dwindled to not much now!

31 For the circular rides; more information about horse trailer parking. As if I'm on my own, I really want to know that I 11/23/2015 9:45 PM can get my car and trailer in and out easily. For the long distance rides more information on accommodation and bag transfer options

32 I don't know what Outdoor Partnership provision is. 11/17/2015 2:44 PM

33 Better maintenance More linked riding routes 11/14/2015 1:28 AM

34 Clearance of obstacles on rights of way footpaths, especially after reporting them, such as the official track between 11/10/2015 4:46 PM Pulley Lane & Rea Brook

35 The more trees everywhere the better 11/7/2015 4:10 PM

36 to know of facilities for leaving cars in villages at starting/finishing places 11/6/2015 12:43 PM

37 Unblock illegally enclosed footpath routes complained about but never actioned or response - Route Code 0520/1 11/6/2015 10:19 AM Bridleway CatB, SO 359799, Also Clunbury BW10 Purslow Wood. Appeal Ref FPS/L 3245/14A/1

38 Opening up obstructed pathways over local farms. Clearing overgrown stiles, marking footpaths across ploughed 11/5/2015 5:33 PM fields. removal of electric fences across paths...

39 More regular minor maintenance of rights of way, to gates, stiles, signage, and prevent overgrowth encroaching. 11/5/2015 1:22 PM

40 More circular on-road bike routes. I have devised a c 50 mile circuit around Bishops Castle mainly on quiet lanes, that 11/5/2015 8:35 AM can be done in 4 sections or 2 half day rides that could easily be promoted

41 If not gates then more accessible stiles, not everyone has long/flexible legs. Stiles are biggest bugbear in planning 11/4/2015 7:59 PM routes. Shorter circular walks would be good, 2/3 miles. This wouldn't be so off-putting to less fit.

42 Better route maintenance (stiles/vegetation) 11/4/2015 9:51 AM

43 Surfaces that are suitable for everyone. 11/3/2015 10:52 PM

44 Continued maintenance of footpaths stiles gates etc tand liaison with land owners to ensure footpaths are accessible 11/3/2015 9:04 PM to all.

45 better provision og say walking for health groups at weekend for those that work and get utterly stressed with their job 11/3/2015 7:48 PM but perhaps need a group to motivate them!!

46 Becoming a grandmother has made me realise that I want to introduce the younger members of my family to the joys 11/3/2015 6:47 PM of being outdoors. The small folk they love encountering wildlife, e.g. ducks, seeing birds on feeders, knowing that's the hole where the fox or rabbit or badger lives. Even parks have wild visitors, perhaps this is something you could think about as well as toddler friendly play equipment.

47 More things for teenagers who are ignored. 11/3/2015 4:45 PM

48 More buses Safer access along lanes for walkers 11/3/2015 9:25 AM

49 More parking places for cars or information that it is ok to park beside a particular gateway. 11/2/2015 11:48 AM

50 Stopping farmers from planting on PROWs, particularly maize and rape. These make the PROW virtually impassable. 11/2/2015 8:44 AM

51 Parking for horse transport 11/1/2015 1:17 AM

52 Unblocked bridleways 10/31/2015 8:18 PM

53 Increased maintenance of rights of way 10/30/2015 4:43 PM

54 Overgrown vegetation removed 10/30/2015 4:08 PM

55 Penalise landowners that do not restore rights of way after ploughing, and consequently obnstruct them with crops !. 10/29/2015 11:48 AM

56 Better maintained bridleways 10/29/2015 9:42 AM

57 Would like to see better protection from development for green spaces around villages 10/28/2015 11:29 PM

58 I feel we are very fortunate to have what already exists and they can always be improved upon where necessary 10/28/2015 11:06 AM especially in terms of health and safety.

59 To take effective action against landowners who persistently fail to reinstate rights of way through crop fields. 10/27/2015 10:30 PM

60 Have you thought of linking in with Sustrans and promoting their cycle routes? 10/27/2015 8:31 PM

61 More dog poo refuse bins please 10/27/2015 7:54 PM

49 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

62 Some paths are not usable due to obstructions. These should be made usable. 10/27/2015 4:10 PM

63 Keeping routes open and free of brambles, nettles etc 10/27/2015 1:13 PM

64 Re Exercise equipment: Recently abroad in Spain (Andalucia) all the resorts had an area with outdoor gym equipment 10/27/2015 10:22 AM - good slection and simple robust fittings.

65 more gates in place of stiles 10/27/2015 10:10 AM

66 I use a map & compass and prefer to plan my own walks, often using elements of signed routes. 10/27/2015 9:39 AM

67 A few more native trees wouldn't go amiss 10/27/2015 1:35 AM

68 More 4 x 4 access 10/26/2015 11:31 PM

69 Get farmers to clear crops from public paths 10/26/2015 11:20 PM

70 Keep paths clear of crops and undergrowth 10/26/2015 10:32 PM

71 Resolving long standing problems with some local footpaths 10/26/2015 10:25 PM

72 my area is not well serviced, stiles are very overgrown. 10/26/2015 8:37 PM

73 Sometimes it's good to get away from from really organised areas and go to the hills for resl wilderness walking 10/26/2015 6:37 PM

74 Too early for us to say, we only moved here on 25th July. 10/26/2015 5:37 PM

75 More publicity for information publications that probably already exist. 10/26/2015 5:34 PM

76 I enjoy the current provision 10/26/2015 1:58 PM

77 But not cycle paths on busy roads. 10/26/2015 1:18 PM

78 More birds and flowers 10/26/2015 12:31 PM

79 Please ensure current footpath network is open and suitable for walking 10/26/2015 12:15 PM

80 Clear away vegetation 10/26/2015 11:32 AM

81 More loos 10/26/2015 10:52 AM

82 footpaths maintained. Action by local authority where paths are reported closed. 10/26/2015 10:50 AM

83 More small parking places in rural areas to access the ROW network 10/26/2015 10:43 AM

84 Have provided my own walks booklet available as a free download at Bucknell Walkers website 10/26/2015 10:01 AM

85 Farmers to reinstate footpaths when cropping. Better stile maintainance 10/26/2015 9:47 AM

86 I am always looking for new trail running routes. Promoting some good ones would probably encourage me to come to 10/24/2015 4:03 PM Shropshire more frequently.

87 parking 10/24/2015 8:52 AM

88 Changing/Showering facilities by car parks; such as developing Bishops Castle and Church Stretton to provide tourist 10/17/2015 11:12 AM support. People would spend more locally if the could refresh themselves after exercise instead of driving back home in their sweaty clothing. It would also give an additional income stream to struggling sports centres.

Q23 Do you have any other comments, questions, or concerns?

# Responses Date

1 Yes - as you will have realised by now (!) I've found this survey frustrating. Is it about rights of way which hardly form 3/9/2016 4:29 PM part of an organised network? What are these green spaces you mention? Is that just a play area or any field that has grass growing in it? Does it need to be fenced off, signposted and managed by Shropshire Council to count? And what about walking and cycling along roads and lanes etc? That's all part of the 'great outdoors' but maybe not of 'Outdoors Provision'. You'd do better to rerun it as a health through outdoors activity survey where everything can be included.

2 Concerned about reduced funding and consequent inability to deal with many rights of way maintenance needs and 3/2/2016 7:18 PM enforcement issues.

3 Housing developments affecting tge safety of walkingand riding routes. 3/2/2016 5:02 PM

4 Costa coffee, KFC, and MacDonald should be made aware of the amount of litter their takeaway packaging creates. I 3/2/2016 3:32 PM pick up lots from the verges and we are over 20 miles from the latter two and have to dispose of it in my domestic bin which means I have to store it here between collections.(several bins full).

5 I think the Outdoor Partnerships teams do a fantastic job in keeping the open spaces and rights of way in good 3/2/2016 9:21 AM condition despite severe budget constraints. Any further cut in the budget would be a disaster.

6 No 2/23/2016 2:51 PM

7 Re Question 21 I am already involved with the local Parish Paths Partnership group 2/16/2016 5:21 PM

8 I am extremely concerned that Shropshire Council places open space and Parks very low on their list of priorities, and 2/9/2016 11:26 AM that I intends to cut funding to these essential facilities, leading to their closure. This will be to the detriment of the people they are elected to serve.

9 Not enough specific questions about horseriding 2/8/2016 3:47 PM

10 More promoting of clearing up dog mess. More native trees. 1/26/2016 10:21 AM

11 we are already involved with rights of way in this area 1/20/2016 2:24 PM

12 I am trying to get a local byway reopened for walkers and have spoken to a lady at the council about this. I understand 1/11/2016 11:03 AM there is a deadline for this to happen (it's an old byway that is no longer marked as a ROW on OS maps, but was once a ROW and we hope it can be reinstated as such). Any help you can give with this matter would be excellent. The byway is in Purlogue.

13 very concerned that the parks & green spaces may suffer through cut backs. These areas are vital for relaxation, 1/11/2016 10:53 AM health & tourism

14 please deal with the right of way around the Garn west of newcastle on clun 1/11/2016 10:28 AM

15 Blocked rights of way or rights of way that have short gaps and don't meet up are most annoying. 1/9/2016 8:29 PM

16 Shropshire's ROWs are much better signed and maintained than those in . It would be nice to do circular walks 12/20/2015 11:32 PM that go over the border without getting lost.

17 The Rights of Way Dept need more government money to spend on bridleways access, so that riders can avoid our 12/19/2015 5:19 PM busy roads and thus save lives.

18 In any literature you publish say that dogs should be on a lead near livestock and perhaps add that the law allows the 12/18/2015 3:53 PM shooting of a dog if the livestock owner "believes" it is going to attack livestock. Also dog fouling is an offence and also in a field will contaminate the grazing and grass/hay harvest.

19 I wish you would mend/rebuild the bridge over the tributary to the beside Broncroft Castle.I understand it 12/18/2015 2:17 PM was washed away in the floods of 2007/8.

20 The team do an excellent job despite cut backs 12/2/2015 7:38 PM

21 The bridle paths near me are not kept clear and have become dangerous to ride through. How should I report this to 11/27/2015 5:26 PM get them cleared?

22 I think the people who keep these access routes open do a brilliant job and I am very grateful 11/26/2015 12:38 PM

23 I would like to see more dog free paths. Life is always a compromise and in our area it is, as in many places, a 11/26/2015 8:52 AM compromise when walking between dog walkers and folk without a dog.I just wish that all dog owners would realise that and respect non dog owners a bit more and keep their dogs on a lead near non dog walkers. Not everyone finds a dog sniffing you or jumping up amusing. If you are not walking a dog that may well be a sign that you do not like dogs. How can a dog be under control when it is 100m away from its owner, they have 3 more off the lead and/or they are talking on a mobile. Thats it , rant over.

24 I love Shropshire. It's as simple as that. I love the gentle, rolling hills and the river and the lovely old market towns and 11/25/2015 10:03 PM villages. Shropshire is the best-kept secret in Britain, with all the wonders of Wales or Cornwall, but without the crowds. Please keep it special and keep on doing what you're doing!

25 We need more walk for health leaders, maybe that could be added to the volunteering list? Thank you for the support 11/25/2015 9:35 PM we get from Shropshire Council it is much appreciated.

26 I'm concerned that we will be losing some of the very supportive Council resource that help us with stile replacements, 11/25/2015 3:45 PM footpath improvements, etc. The knowledge, skills and tools supplied by the Council are critical to this work continuing in any meaningful way.

27 I'd just like to say how much nicer it is when dog mess is cleared up. Thanks. 11/24/2015 8:21 PM

28 I moved to the area last year and am now trying to get my horse out and about. I think what you've done with the Ride 11/23/2015 9:45 PM Shropshire website is brilliant and I'm using it extensively. More info on accommodation and trailer parking would improve it even more.

29 At the current rate of spending cuts I cannot see how the existing network of rights of way can be maintained at their 11/21/2015 11:48 AM current level let alone improved upon, which most do need. I frequently use the mercian way route 45, from Bridgnorth to Ironbridge, the surface to this path is in appalling condition, as a dog walker it is not so bad but nothing would induce me to take a cycle ride along, it as it is rutted with huge pot holes, the current maintenance of scrapeing the surface down below the level of holes is ridiculous and lasts approx 2 months before it is back to square one.

30 I believe the SC team do an excellent job with limited resources 11/19/2015 8:51 PM

31 Am already active in a P3 group 11/19/2015 12:32 PM

32 Very important that routes are kept properly maintained Very important that lost ways and under recorded routes are 11/14/2015 1:28 AM resolved and added to the Definitive Map

33 There is a certain amount that volunteers can do but I understand that it is County Council responsibility to ensure 11/10/2015 4:46 PM work is done and ensure farmers etc do not obstruct routes or allow hedges to grow over footpaths. Removal of large tree branches is too big a job for volunteers sand must be done by Council staff

34 I am already involoved in my local Parish Paths Partnership group 11/9/2015 2:02 PM

35 The P3 group has had really good help from Shrops Council (Paul Butter). I'm concerned that this could be withdrawn, 11/7/2015 4:10 PM or that he and his colleagues could become overwhelmed by any increase in the already wide-ranging nature of their responsibilities.

36 My partner and I are already involved heavily in several charities otherwise we should help more in this very important 11/7/2015 10:48 AM work for society

37 I'd like to mention the great work done by countryside officer Wendy around the mere at Ellesmere. Many thanks to 11/6/2015 11:22 AM her for her commitment.

38 Recognise budget constraints but Council staff need to take personal responsibility to action, solve and reply to 11/6/2015 10:19 AM complaints. Leaving matters unresolved is unhelpful, allows occupiers to illegally block paths to the detriment of walkers. Non action and ignoring customer concerns would not be tolerated in a commercial organisation - leads to loss of business. Perhaps that is the solution - privatisation!

39 Think Walking for Health is a great idea & Department at Shirehall are working hard. Not so sure about support from 11/6/2015 7:03 AM surgeries.

40 My outdoor activities include solo and group participation 11/5/2015 9:17 PM

41 Thank you for the opportunity to provide my opinion on local rights of way etc. Q5: '...Outdoor Partnership's provision..' 11/5/2015 1:22 PM is jargonistic / not plain English? Q9: would be useful to select more than one option The survey appears to contain a bias towards 'Organised Groups', which is not doubt a key target area of users and can be a key justification for retaining public expenditure on RoW and open space provision, but I hope it will be recognised by politicians and Council management and staff reviewing the results of the survey that the ability to access and experience the local natural environment as an individual is equally important. Thank you

42 The cutbacks to the Countryside officer network responsible for the paths. With more equipment our volunteer group 11/4/2015 5:10 PM could be more effective, but we need SCC officers to liaise with the farmers.

67 / 76 Outdoor Partnerships User Survey

43 Access to the outdoors is vitally important for people's health and wellbeing as is therefore the maintenance of the 11/4/2015 3:27 PM footpaths in our beautiful county to enable this. Especially these days with the concerns about obesity levels and many more people having less active jobs. I appreciate funds are tight, and we cannot maintain all the footpaths we are so fortunate to have criss- crossing our county, but I feel there does need to be provision to maintain those we are able to and as many as is feasible to allow all to enjoy and access the area and the benefits of a gentle or a longer walk as they are able. Where possible it is helpful to put in gates where stiles are limiting to walkers / in disrepair to enable those who cannot manage stiles to access routes in their local area. A big thank you to all those involved in keeping our footpaths open and maintaining our green areas.

44 W4H locally is well organised and judging by the increase in walkers in the past 4 years there are a lot of happy 11/4/2015 1:48 PM people

45 Blocked and badly maintained paths are what I would like to make an effort with. 11/4/2015 9:00 AM

46 Concern that continual reductions in Council funding and staffing will lead to deterioration of the footpath and cycle 11/3/2015 11:01 PM path network. Volunteers can help, but it must be lead by qualified and experienced professionals.

47 1. An ever increasing amount of dog muck on the footpaths because people cannot be bothered to clean up after their 11/3/2015 7:48 PM dog. 2. Footpath signage has disappeared on the lane showing where the footpath goes through the Claypits area of Tetchill. 3. Perhaps as a revenue spinner you could use the footpaths and canal linked together ie. you walk the footpath one direction but hop on a boat to get back, look at the scenery two ways.

48 When on major paths I encounter tourists from all over the UK and the world. I am sure that the outdoors is a 11/3/2015 6:47 PM tremendous asset to the County and could be exploited more without spoiling it, especially though web based links as well as more formal methods.

49 I am a trained volunteer walk leader 11/3/2015 4:56 PM

50 Not enough for teenagers or people who want to have fun, like festivals or teenager events. Everything is based 11/3/2015 4:45 PM around retired pensioners who have no interest in young people

51 Shropshire Council are much better at maintaining their network than neighboring councils in Wales. 11/3/2015 12:01 PM

52 I did not answer qun 7 as I do not know what you mean by 'walk': walk around inside my house, walk to the bus stop, 11/2/2015 10:49 PM or go for a recreational country walk? Most of my walking and cycling is around town (about 5 days per week), and I do this for my health and fitness rather than going by car or bus. In this regard, I urge the council to support opening the proposed accessible path at the town end of the Dana, as the current alternative route avoiding the Dana steps by using Castle Foregate is circuitous, unpleasant and dangerous.

53 I am already involved with the Parish Paths Partnership for the parish of Hopton Castle 11/2/2015 6:14 PM

54 I am very lucky to live in Shropshire with the Long Mynd not too far away and I never get tired of riding the same 11/2/2015 2:38 PM routes as you always see something different every time.

55 Have answered question 9 and 10, as I often walk alone, bu am a leader for walking for health but tha is only one day 11/2/2015 1:25 PM a week, so question in my opinion no correctly worded.

56 Shropshire offers some of the best local walking. However, certain landowners seem less than welcoming to walkers 11/1/2015 4:41 PM despite there being Rights of Way across their land. I am aware that there are irresponsible users of footpaths, but - as may be seen from the groups with which I walk - neither they nor I fall into that category.

57 Please keep the bridleways open and not destroy them. 10/31/2015 8:27 PM

58 Bridleways make up a fraction of the right of way network and need to be increased. Overgrown bridleways and tracks 10/31/2015 8:24 PM and poorly maintained gates mean that they become unusable or very difficult to use which is a pity as there are so few of them. Also the ford in Clun is very slippy and needs the surface roughing or the adjacent banks of the river grading to allow horse access . A nationally promoted bridleway ride crosses this ford and its a disgrace to Shropshire to leave it in its present state.

59 I would like to see Sropshire take advantage of new housing developments to require developers to incorporate well 10/31/2015 11:22 AM designed footpaths especially where it is possible to connect to the existing rights of way network. One such opportunity is the 100+ development at Albrighton currently with Planning. I am concerned about the minimal provision of play areas for children in my home area of Albrighton

62 I think it is great that there are more dog gates in places where there are stiles but disappointed to find that some of 10/30/2015 10:02 PM these have then been nailed shut so i have to lift my dog over the stile and this does put me off using some otherwise lovely walks.

63 To many Pheasents /Shoots on Public footpaths. 10/30/2015 8:10 PM

64 It is far too expensive to set up play areas in small villages 10/30/2015 4:06 PM

65 There needs to be improvement to ensure that equality laws are upheld. There are still many stiles which block those 10/30/2015 2:16 PM with wheelchairs/buggys walking limitations which is scandalous really. Walking on country roads because there is no pavement or path of any description isolates people in their own communities.

66 during the growing months, several footpaths around Bridgnorth are near impassable and our choice of usable 10/29/2015 10:43 PM footpaths, especially for 'Walking for Health walks', is severely limited

67 I'd like to see more joined up thinking - you can't allow planning on green spaces and then say you want green 10/29/2015 7:29 PM corridors, to welcome walkers and to improve the approaches to Whitchurch. I have seen at least five areas where I used to walk my dogs on green spaces that have been lost through building in the last ten years or so. More are to go.

72 please please penalise landers for obstructing paths with crops !. 10/29/2015 11:48 AM

73 Given the subsidies paid by taxpayers to farmers and landowners (via CAP), why is it so difficult to get agreement on 10/29/2015 11:25 AM dog stiles from them as a quid pro quo?

74 The factors that influence where I can walk with my dog are stiles which we can't get through and fields that have 10/29/2015 10:58 AM been ploughed without a clear path and also fields with cows in. We had a really bad experience being chased by cows with out dog when she was on her lead and would not go through one again even with clearly marked public right of way.

75 I'm filling his out on the basis of the time I spent walking in Shropshire while on sabbatical in Birmingham this past 10/29/2015 9:21 AM year. The beauty of the area and the quality of the paths was amazing. Public transport links were tough to find and use--a real hindrance. With the privatized bus services this is a problem throughout he UK. The Peak District does have pretty good aggregated, walker-centric transportation maps. I was there over e winter so missed the shuttle bus.

76 In my opinion the biggest spoiler of the rural footpath network is the intrusive nature of new housing developments into 10/28/2015 11:29 PM open countryside

77 Thank you for the support you give Trefonen QE II Jubilee Field in these difficult times. 10/28/2015 7:54 PM

78 RE-SECTION 22 I only wish to take part in surveys when taking part in the walking for health programme walks. 10/28/2015 7:11 PM

79 I expect the council, to whom I pay c,£1400 council tax,per year to maintain and create new footpaths/walks. 10/28/2015 7:04 PM

80 We live in Shifnal and desperately need some outdoor facilities. The 2 parks have some play equipment but there is 10/28/2015 6:39 AM massive scope for using the remaining green spaces for picnic areas, walks etc

81 Whilst I agree with maintaining rights of way, I do not intend to assist Tory controlled Shropshire Council in off-loading 10/27/2015 10:22 PM its responsibility and cost of maintaining such. Beware of this `something for nothing` political culture of this Council, it should realise that public Rights of Way are very important to the economy of Shropshire, we have visitors from all over the world using our open spaces , footpaths etc. I do not apologise for my political comments.

85 I love walking but cannot manage long distances . 10/27/2015 8:13 PM

86 I am concerned there are several local dog sitting services who each morning bring up to 6 dogs in a van and exercise 10/27/2015 7:54 PM them on the path from Washford Road, Meole Village, and along the brook. Their human carers don't appear to be picking up the dog waste. I've witnessed them coming back to their vehicles, not put any bags into the dog waste bin and drive off. Those dogs surely must leave some mess?

87 I am currently the co-ordinator for Eardington Parish Paths Partnership and already work closely with the Outdoor 10/27/2015 5:01 PM team.

88 Somewhere on the Shropshire Councils website it says that because of an ageing population, outdoor, leisure and 10/27/2015 4:08 PM fitness facilities will be LESS well-used. I disagree with this, and strongly urge you to encourage older people to become more, not less, active, and this means local and easily accessible facilities, eg SWIMMING POOLS.

89 I am very happy with the help, advice, support, participation, and interest shown by our WFH co-ordinator. (Mick 10/27/2015 1:47 PM Dunn)

90 Having moved back to the county in the last five years from Devon the state ofthe paths network is not up to the same 10/27/2015 10:30 AM standard as in that county or Cornwall... although it is good there is room for improvement.

91 Keep up the good work 10/27/2015 9:49 AM

92 I am an active volunteer with the NT, a local wood & field, and a local nature reserve. 10/27/2015 9:18 AM

93 Contrary to the idea of those in high places; the outdoor scene can not rely on voluntary help alone, to maintain the 10/27/2015 1:35 AM current standard. The fact that the current standard is in my view inadequate, is perhaps another story. A rather depressing story. We are after all a rural county. Visitors are likely to come partly because of this, seeking an outdoor experience. What puts my friends off more than anything, is the idea of starting a walk and finding problems part way along the intended route. Having witnessed many footpaths over the years, I can't say I blame them. If trying something new, or out of your comfort zone; it often doesn't take much to make the experience unpleasant.

94 The importance of future maintenance, and more protection of valuable off road riding routes which are being 10/27/2015 12:46 AM impacted on by planning decisions.

95 Need some effective pro-active enforcement 10/26/2015 11:31 PM

96 None 10/26/2015 10:48 PM

97 I appreciate your funds are limited but it is frustrating when we report footpath problems (like a dangerous road 10/26/2015 10:25 PM crossing and a footpath diverted by planning regulations) and years later it is still not resolved. The good thing is how much better the majority of local footpaths are with many kissing gates replacing stiles over past 3 years. Also signage has been much improved

98 I did not fill in the volunteering question as I am already a volunteer for Walking for Health, Walkers Are Welcome and 10/26/2015 9:24 PM the local P3 group.

99 Walkers need to remember that people also live where they merely walk for pleasure, and to show respect by not 10/26/2015 7:08 PM leaving litter, dog mess, and allowing thier dogs to run amok. And teach thier children to love the countryside .

100 I think there are opportunities to increase biodiversity and enjoyment of the natural spaces in Oswestry and Shropshire 10/26/2015 6:47 PM by allowing grasses to grow long, allowing trees to assume their natural form and not over pruning their boughs and branches so that children can not reach them. Trees are more stable if lower branches are retained, as this lowers their centre of gravity. I think more fruit trees and fruit bushes could belated on parks and n verges, for people to enjoy the wonder and satisfaction of picking and eating fruit direct from the tree. The blossoms and fruits would help to nourish bees, insects and birds. I also think that every ark should have apple of stones, a pile of rocks and a compost heap for grass cuttings to provide habitat for insects. Parks should not clear away grass cuttings but have a compost heap so thatpeople come to accept them as habitat for insects, and a valuable recycling requirement for a balanced garden and park in that they provide food and grubs for birds.

101 Keep up the good work! 10/26/2015 6:33 PM

102 Safety from footpaths that lead onto main roads - A495 in particular. Taking the opportunity to increase - lengthen 10/26/2015 6:23 PM footpaths to make circular routes where ever possible.

103 Penley woods is being cleared too much. Its wildness is being lost. 10/26/2015 6:21 PM

104 In general Shropshire's footpaths have improved in recent years. However there are some areas which appear to have 10/26/2015 6:09 PM been neglected, e.g. The Maelor Way/Watt's Dyke Way from Shell Brook to Gledrid (in Shropshire), and along the Welsh Border close to Llansilin (perhaps not many people walk there). It is good to see that cropping issues are being address, for many years some places where out of bounds due to maize cropping (which is expanding rapidly). Paths through wheat & barley & oats could often be wider, just a foot wide path is inadequate, in damp weather one gets soaked walking through them. This summer I found the Shropshire Way link path from Church Stretton to Wenlock Edge very poor.

110 I find the lack of bins annoying! Particularly at parks when you have children. You always need a bin! I'm thinking 10/26/2015 2:41 PM especially of the park on Crowmeole Lane in Copthorne and in The Quarry.

111 I recently visisted Haven Hafan Y Mor and they had a fantastic open space, well managed but teaming with wildlife, 10/26/2015 1:35 PM had exercise equipment, signs and I felt safe

112 The main problem with the rights of way is missing way markers and dangerous stiles. 10/26/2015 1:28 PM

113 Don't let our parks suffer because of cuts 10/26/2015 12:31 PM

114 As mentioned i have serious concerns regarding the state of the footpath network. 10/26/2015 12:15 PM

115 More pressure should be put on landowners who obstruct footpaths or refuse to clear paths through crops. 10/26/2015 12:12 PM

116 The principal problem in our local area is the difficulty of maintaining paths which cross crop fields: oil seed rape is a 10/26/2015 11:48 AM particular nuisance

117 Leisure activities and the people who visit because of the beautiful county around, are a very important contribution to 10/26/2015 11:40 AM the local economy, and need to be encouraged.

118 Once again my only gripe is that mountain bikers think that they have the right to use public footpaths and other areas 10/26/2015 11:19 AM that they shouldn't. On more than one occasion I have been verbally abused by mountain bikers when I have challenged them regarding the law pertaining to public footpaths and pedal bikes etc.

119 Give me a good email address that will get problems on Footpaths put right. 10/26/2015 10:55 AM

120 The main issue about Rights of Way is the decimation of your legal team, which is now far too small to do anything 10/26/2015 10:43 AM other than the bare minimum. This means that footpath problems involving difficult landowners, obstructions, line issues etc cannot get resolved. Once a landowner decides to make life difficult for walkers, or a path cannot be walked on the legal line because the map is wrong, nothing is getting done. This is beyond the ability of volunteers to resolve. A second problem in less walked areas is the loss of footpaths to vegetation - particularly bramble. Clearance by volunteers or people just walking the paths is not up to the job. P3 groups need better tools and guidance to do anything about this. Shropshire Council should look at the possibility of specific herbicides.

121 There is a creeping destruction of the countryside by farmers who do not adhere to regulations on protection of 10/26/2015 10:30 AM hedges or destruction of habitats.

122 Signposts on Grinshill walk were difficult to follow. Lots of paths that maybe weren't official, confusing you off the 10/25/2015 8:33 PM proper one.

123 I'm concerned about council cut backs. 10/24/2015 9:22 PM

124 I would like to compliment you on your exceptional Definitive Mapping staff....apart from that Lucy McFarlane....she is 10/24/2015 4:03 PM evil.

125 I am very concerned at the number of developments or planned developments in the Mere area at Ellesmere 10/24/2015 12:00 PM

126 Main points. Local roads are dangerous for cyclists. Roads marked as cycle routes should be made safe for cyclists 10/17/2015 11:12 AM as a matter of duty of care. If outdoor tourism is to be promoted in South Shropshire then co-located parking, toilet, changing, showering, swimming, sauna and refreshment provision should be promoted. There is scope for developing existing facilities, such as those in Bishops Castle and Church Stretton and encouraging private provision. This could be based on under used public houses, in particular there should be a assumption against any plans to build on pub car parks.
