Vocês são tudo pra mim! 6 BIOGRAFIA Leandro Araujo Argôlo, filho de Evandro Argôlo e Antônia Araujo Argôlo, nasceu em 06 de fevereiro de 1992, em Jequié, Bahia. Cursou o Bacharelado em Ciências Biológicas com ênfase em Genética pela Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (UESB) entre os anos de 2009 e 2013. Durante a graduação, foi estagiário voluntário e, posteriormente, bolsista de iniciação científica pela FAPESB (2011-2012) no Laboratório de Citogenética Animal, sob orientação do Prof. Dr. Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello Affonso. Ao fim da graduação, em abril de 2013, apresentou sua monografia intitulada: “Análise citogenética em Cichlasoma sanctifranciscense (Perciformes, Cichlidae)”. Imediatamente após a conclusão da sua graduação, ingressou no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Genética, Biodiversidade e Conservação (PPGGBC), da UESB, permanecendo sob orientação do Prof. Dr. Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello Affonso e sendo bolsista CAPES. Ao longo do curso, desenvolveu pesquisas na área de Citogenética e Biologia Molecular em Pleuronectiformes da costa do Brasil. PPGGBC 7 PPGGBC “A Ciência é mais do que um conjunto de conhecimentos, é uma forma de pensar” (Carl Sagan) 8 RESUMO A ordem Pleuronectiformes constitui um grupo peculiar de peixes conhecidos como linguados ou solhas e caracterizados por sua anatomia diferenciada. Na fase adulta, o corpo destes organismos é altamente comprimido, bilateralmente assimétrico e com os dois olhos localizados no mesmo lado. Entretanto, a taxonomia dos representantes dessa ordem é bastante controversa em razão da sobreposição de caracteres morfológicos e variação intraespecífica, causando problemas de identificação pelos métodos tradicionais e subestimando a riqueza do grupo. Tais incertezas quanto à diversidade dos Pleuronectiformes são agravadas pela associação frequente destes animais com ecossistemas costeiros altamente impactados, como os estuários e pela exploração pesqueira. Mesmo diante desses fatores, poucos estudos que utilizem ferramentas variadas de análise da diversidade e variabilidade dos Pleuronectiformes estão disponíveis. Por outro lado, em conjunto com os dados morfológicos, a análise das espécies por ferramentas citogenéticas e moleculares representa uma abordagem informativa para resolução taxonômica em peixes, incluindo grupos historicamente controversos. Assim, este trabalho objetivou estabelecer as unidades taxonômicas e/ou evolutivas em representantes de diferentes famílias de Pleuronectiformes da costa brasileira, com ênfase em ecossistemas estuarinos por meio do uso do DNA barcoding, análises morfológicas e citogenéticas. Os resultados aqui apresentados sobre dados morfológicos e moleculares confirmam a eficiência do DNA barcoding em Pleuronectiformes e reforçam o poder da taxonomia integrativa na identificação de unidades evolutivas e resolução de inconsistências de dados com base em um único tipo de análise. No caso do gênero Bothus, os dados cromossômicos revelaram uma homogeneidade para cariótipos de Bothus ocellatus (2n=32) ao longo da costa brasileira, além de um padrão pouco usual em Bothus sp. (2n=44), ampliando a variação do número diplóide para o gênero. Da mesma forma, as análises morfológicas e moleculares indicam a presença de uma nova espécie desse o gênero com maior similaridade morfológica à B. lunatus e íntima relação genética com B. pantherinus proveninente dos oceanos Índico e Pacífico. Juntamente com cacterísticas larvais e biogeográficas, os dados genéticos em Bothus apoiam um cenário de especiação em anel com origem e dispersão do ancestral de Bothus sp. pela corrente de Benguela. Os resultados deste trabalho demonstram a necessidade de ampliação de estudos na ordem para o litoral brasileiro e reforçam a necessidade de revisões taxonômicas detalhadas para o grupo. PPGGBC 9 ABSTRACT The order Pleuronectiformes encompasses a unique fish group, known as flounder or flatfish, with differentiated anatomical features. When adults, these fish present highly compressed and asymmetrical body with both eyes located on the same body side. Nonetheless, the taxonomy of species in this order is controversial because of overlapping of morphological traits and intraspecific variation thus hindering a proper identification by traditional methods and underestimating their actual richness. Such uncertainties about the diversity in Pleuronectiformes are critical since they inhabit highly threatened coastal environments, such as estuaries, besides being exploited in fisheries. Even though, few studies based on distinct tools to access the diversity and variability of Pleuronectiformes are available. On the other hand, morphological studies associated with cytogenetic and molecular analyses provide an informative approach to resolve taxonomic issues in fish, including controversial groups. Therefore, in the present work, we attempted to establish the taxonomic/evolutionary units in representatives of distinct families in Pleuronectiformes from Brazilian coast with emphasis on estuarine ecosystems by DNA barcoding, morphological and cytogenetic analyses. The results based on morphological and molecular data confirmed the efficacy of DNA barcoding in flatfish and reinforce the utility of integrative taxonomy in the identification of evolutionary units and resolution of inconsistent data based on a single dataset. In the case of Bothus, the chromosomal data revealed a karyotypic homogeneity in Bothus ocellatus (2n=32) throughout the Brazilian coast besides an unusual in Bothus sp. (2n=44), thus increasing the variation in diploid number within this genus. Likewise, both morphological and molecular analyses indicated the presence of a new species in this genus, being morphologically similar to B. lunatus but genetically related to B. pantherinus from Indian and Pacific oceans. Along with larval traits and biogeographic features, the genetic data in Bothus support the hypothesis of ring speciation with origin and dispersal of Bothus sp. ancestor via Benguela current. The present results show that studies in Pleuronectiformes should be intensified

Sciaenidae was the most abundant family, with 37.1% of the Henry Louis SPACH6 total number of individuals caught, and with the highest richness (18 species). Statistical analyses evidenced significant differences in environmental characteristics and in fish fauna, and that both areas disturbances were observed in the fish assemblages during the dry and wet season, being more intense in the Southern area, disturbances that would be related to the shrimp fishing present in the two areas sampled in this study.

The traditional knowledge that fishermen have of fishes is of utmost importance for the establishment of conservation strategies for many species. This study aimed to analyse the knowledge of and utilization of fishes by the artisanal fishermen in a fishing community on the coast of Ceará State (Northeast Brazil). Methods: In 2011, a number of semi-structured interviews were performed with fishermen with more than 20 years of fishery experience. The interviews were about fisheries (collecting spots, artefacts, etc.) and fish use. The fishes cited by the fishermen were identified scientifically and ethnotaxonomically. Results: Considered masters of fishery, they cited 162 vernacular names of fishes, which corresponded to 290 different species, also including other animals such as dolphins, porpoises, whales and manatees. The criteria for the classification of the fishes were well known and utilised by the fishermen, and they were based on morphology, behaviour, habitat and the importance of commercial and fishing activities. Four hierarchical categories were identified in their classification system: kingdom, life-form, generic and specific. The fish nomenclature created by the fishermen was mostly composed of generic and monotypic names. The main uses of fish were for food and commercial purposes.

Overholtz Trophic models can quantify the constraints on production within an ecosystem. Such models require estimates of biomass across the spectrum of species assemblages, along with detailed knowledge of trophic interactions. In order to construct a food web model for the northeast USA continental shelf ecosystem, we estimated time series of demersal and pelagic species biomasses for four areas (Mid-Atlantic Bight, Southern New England, Georges Bank, Gulf of Maine) using spring and autumn research survey data. Species were grouped based on food habits and taxonomic relationships. Survey catchabilities were assumed to be similar within each group. We used a Bayesian estimation framework to characterize uncertainty in our results. An informative prior distribution for survey catchability was derived from published studies. Observed survey catchability data were taken from published studies and derived from stock assessments of individual species. Our results showed that total demersal and pelagic species biomass differed among regions, ranging from 29 g@m—2 in the Mid-Atlantic Bight to 16 g@m—2 in the Gulf of Maine. It was also evident that dramatic changes have occurred in the biomasses of major demersal and pelagic species groups across areas. There was a system-wide increase in the abundance of commercial pelagic finfishes in the mid-1980s. Determining whether pelagic forage species will decrease if demersal predator abundance increases will be important for implementing an ecosystem approach to fisheries management in this region.

The taxonomy of this group has long been controversial, and the karyotype of the order presents a high degree of variability in diploid number, derived from chromosomal rearrangements such as Robertsonian fusions. Previously it has been proposed that the large metacentric chromosome of S. senegalensis arises from this kind of chromosome rearrangement and that this is a proto-sex chromosome. Results: In this work, the Robertsonian origin of the large metacentric chromosome of S. senegalensis has been tested by the Zoo-FISH technique applied to two species of the Soleidae family (Dicologlossa cuneata and Dagetichthys lusitanica), and by comparative genome analysis with Cynoglossus semilaevis. From the karyotypic analysis we were able to determine a chromosome complement comprising 2n = 50 (FN = 54) in D. cuneata and 2n = 42 (FN = 50) in D. lusitanica. The large metacentric painting probe gave consistent signals in four acrocentric chromosomes of the two Soleidae species; and the genome analysis proved a common origin with four chromosome pairs of C. semilaevis.Asa result of the genomic analysis, up to 61 genes were annotated within the thirteen Bacterial Artificial Chromosome clones analysed.

Dr. sc. Radosna Mužinić 1916-2004 4 ACTA ADRIATICA, 45(1): 3-8, 2004 Dr sc. RADOSNA MUŽINIĆ died at the age of 87 on 5 April 2004. She was an internationally renowned and highly respected Fisheries scientist and Ichthyologist as well as leading scientist in small pelagic fish studies in Croatia. Dr. Mužinić was born on 15 November 1916 in Metković. She has obtained her degree in bio- logy in 1940, while in 1953 she got her PhD degree. She became scientific counsellor in 1967. From 1946 up to her retirement, Dr. Mužinić has worked in the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries. She has continued to work for IOF until the end of 1990 as outside collaborator. During 1956 she worked in the Great Britain sponsored by the British Council at Fisheries Laboratory in Lowestoft and Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. The scientific work of Dr. Radosna Mužinić is of a great importance not only for the Croatian, but also for the international scientific community. Her research referred to biology and ecology of commercially interesting Adriatic fish species, especially sardine, sprat, anchovy, Atlantic mackerel, Spanish mackerel, horse mackerel, red mullet, hake and grey mullet, and to some extent even the North Sea herring. The main field of her research was focused on sardine. The scientific work of Dr. Radosna Mužinić covered different issues such as sub-population of sardine in the Adriatic (taking into account importance of this matter for better fishery management), biology of sardine and surmullet as well as ecology of sardine.

In this study, we carried out stable isotope (δ13C and δ15N) and stomach content analyses to infer the trophic linkages between two snapper species (Lutjanus synagris and Lutjanus griseus) captured in the littoral of Campeche, Mexico. In total, 781 specimens were collected (528 L. synagris and 253 L. griseus) and based on relative importance index [%PSIRI] both snapper species consumed based on the prey-specific index of relative importance (PSIRI), Penaeidae family (PSIRI = 23.41%) was the most important species in the diet of Lutjanus synagris, while Callinectes sapidus (PSIRI = 21.45%) was the primary prey of Lutjanus griseus.
