NJCU illustration faculty member, and illustrator of the baseball card Catfish Hunter, Dennis Dittrich introduced his long time friend, professor, and mentor by saying: “When someone reaches a point—and very few people do—but when someone reaches a point in their field where they are absolutely peerless—where whatever that person does cannot be duplicated, imitated, or replicated—they can go by one name. Prince. MacGyver. Santa. in my everyday work. I am even comfortable in the Above: Murray role of teaching those very same principles. Please note that changes to the plan, other than those suggested in this letter, could result in additional comments from the State. Additionally, these comments reflect only issues that are the responsibility of the agencies represented at the meeting. Certification Comments: These comments must be addressed in order for our office to consider the plan amendment consistent with the terms of your certification and the requirements of Title 22, § 702 of the Del. Code. • The Town shall expand the Public Participation element within the Document to reflect not only dates met, but comments provided by the Town residents and how these issues were met to further strengthen the overall document. The town has expanded the public participation section since the first draft but the Town should be more specific regarding the comments received and the Rehoboth Art League issue. How many residents responded? How many residents were for a separate zoning district? How many were against? • The Town shall expand its discussion of community coordination and discuss how the neighboring jurisdictions were engaged during this process and how these jurisdictions might be engaged to grow economic development opportunities while enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents. -

Unearthing Mesoamerican Antiquity in the Art of the United States, 1839-1893
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE OLD NEW WORLD: UNEARTHING MESOAMERICAN ANTIQUITY IN THE ART OF THE UNITED STATES, 1839-1893 Angela Susan George, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Dissertation directed by: Professor Sally M. Promey Department of Art History and Archaeology Through a series of case studies, this dissertation examines how and why artists in the United States imagined Mesoamerican antiquity between 1839 and 1893. The artists whose work I consider most closely include Frederick Catherwood, Peter F. Rothermel, Emanuel Leutze, George Martin Ottinger, and George de Forest Brush; works by other artists play supporting roles or amplify the observations made in this project. The decades in which I situate my study were key in the development of the United States’ geographic borders and national identity as well as in the foundation of archaeological investigation in Mesoamerica. During the period under question, ancient Mesoamerica provided a “usable past” for many in the United States. Since little was known of the pre-Hispanic cultures of the region, Mesoamerican antiquity served as a palimpsest upon which a number of narratives could be written. As this dissertation reveals, ancient Mesoamerica resonated differently with various individuals and groups in the United States. The Mesoamerica that existed in the U.S. imagination was at once savage, exotic, advanced, and primitive, inhabited by a population assigned a similarly disparate and ultimately contradictory range of traits. Representations of Mesoamerica were not fixed but eminently variable, shaped to serve the exigencies of many historical moments. As such, these images reveal as much about the nineteenth-century United States as they do about the people and places depicted. -

Yet, women have been noticeably absent from the historical record of the RCMP, allowing the figure of the heroic male Mountie to continue his dominance in official, academic, and popular histories. Central to these discourses has been the male police body which has been positioned as the only body capable of enforcing the law in Canada. -

The Illustration Game: Quotes and Notes Jaleen Grove The Illustration Game, published in Communication Arts magazine, is an artwork that critically evaluates and satirizes the illustration industry 1959-2019. It conceives of the time period in the form of a board game in which players roll a die to advance along a path, accumulating points or losing them according to typical events of each decade. The path winds through a forest of quotations that were said in print at the time or shortly after by leading illustrators and critics. For the quotations to read properly and succinctly, wording was very slightly modified in some cases. The sources and the quotes without modification are given here for those who wish to see context and origin. This document only discusses the quotations that appear in the black background. -

Champoux: Wise or Foolish Wise or Foolish Women in Mormon Biblical Narrative Art Jennifer Champoux isual imagery is an inescapable element of religion. Even those Vgroups that generally avoid figural imagery, such as those in Juda- ism and Islam, have visual objects with religious significance.1 In fact, as David Morgan, professor of religious studies and art history at Duke University, has argued, it is often the religions that avoid figurative imag- ery that end up with the richest material culture.2 To some extent, this is true for Mormonism. Although Mormons believe art can beautify a space, visual art is not tied to actual ritual practice. Chapels, for exam- ple, where the sacrament ordinance is performed, are built with plain walls and simple lines and typically have no paintings or sculptures. Yet, outside chapels, Mormons enjoy a vast culture of art, which includes traditional visual arts, texts, music, finely constructed temples, clothing, historical sites, and even personal devotional objects. -
