LAMB Mutton is making strides in the export markets. While always a staple for the Chinese market, there are other markets in Europe and Asia where mutton demand is running high, particularly for buyers that have not been able to attract their fill of lamb cuts. No longer viewed as an inferior option to lamb, export values for mutton carcasses and six-way cuts have been on par with lamb values. From a processor’s perspective, mutton is also favourable because it requires less labour to process. Securing enough processing staff has been an ongoing issue that has been exacerbated by Covid-19 travel restrictions. This has pushed mutton slaughter returns higher, relative to lamb values, with the mutton indicator 60-90c/kg above the five-year average over the past eight weeks. This has resulted in some hefty mutton slaughter rates this season which will be further eating into New Zealand’s already dwindling breeding ewe flock.

It follows the suspension of four Australian TURIROA SELLOUT: Turiroa Stud near Wairoa sold their ram crop last week and it went very well. “We had a good plants in May, and another in August which were crowd and sold 110 rams with spirited bidding all the way through,” said Andrew Powdrell. “The sale average was $1067, which ostensibly food safety and labelling concerns. was only slightly down on last year and we sold more rams this year. Southdown 28\28 $1021 average, Tigers 36\36 $997 average, Suftex 24\24 in the beef export scene so it is unlikely that its $1218 average, Belsuftex 22\22 $918 average. Wairoa Star picture absence will cause a noticeable difference in the Chinese markets. Club membership grew four-fold in a year — from 45 members in 2019 to 180 in 2020. This included an increase in junior players from four to 27, as the club implemented a three-step plan to improve player numbers. “Club coach Willie Donnelly has done a fantastic job with the junior development programme we have implemented,” Newman said. “It has dramatically changed the culture of the club.” In competitive play, the club entered seven teams in the district eliminations. The five men’s teams swept divisions B, C, D and F, while the women’s teams won the C and F grades. On the national stage, Surf City Squash continued to shine. Club member Casey Miller won the C Grade women’s Champion of Champions title, and the club won the C Grade women’s title in Napier and the F Grade men’s title in Morrinsville at the Superchamps this year. The club also increased its participation in regional tournaments. It entered the Hawke’s Bay interclub tournament. Once a week the Surf City team would meet one of four Hawke’s Bay teams in Wairoa (to decrease driving times) so the players would have more frequent competition from Napier and Hastings.
