Forward momentum JIM TUCKER finds out what Taranaki rugby is doing to make more history: “It was the BBC - Brown, Briscoe and Carroll.” So began the front page story in the Taranaki Herald Sports Edition one Saturday in 1959. It was one of an endless string of puns the paper’s rugby writer used to chronicle extraordinary feats by Taranaki’s late-50s Ranfurly Shield holders. The monikers so playfully employed above – it could easily have been Burke, Boon and Cameron - are a distant memory for most of today’s generation. But they’re far from forgotten at Taranaki Football Rugby Union HQ in Yarrow Stadium. As the photograph of TRFU chief executive Mike Collins shows, that great team dominates one whole wall of the meeting room, and as the union gears up to repeat last year’s win in the ITM inter-provincial rugby competition, the names of Peter Burke, Ross Brown, Kevin Briscoe, Ralph Carroll and company resonate as never before. One reason is the current team already rivals the ‘59ers on at least one measure – the number of All Blacks in its ranks While Taranaki had six at various stages between 1957 and 1960, today’s team has five, with more in the offing. It also has eight Maori All Blacks, (including captain Charlie Ngatai, also an All Black), and two in the Junior All Blacks. Not that any of this is particularly at the forefront He says the academy managers, Willy Rickards of Mike Collins’ mind as he and his team prepare and Adam Haye, spotted Vaeno during some high for the ITM Cup season, which began with a school first fifteen games.

The skills and games included in this document are to be used as a guide to assist trained coaches at the NCCP Community Initiation level to teach the non-contact game with the principles of LTRD. Non-Contact rugby provides a safe and simple introduction to the game of rugby union. This guide has been developed to offer coaches working with young players in the non-contact game the opportunity to grow their knowledge and skills, and in doing so improve the experience afforded to young players entering the game. An early positive experience has been shown to lead to longer-term player participation. Non-Contact rugby introduces both the player and coach to the fundamentals of evasive running, handling and passing, as well as the basic rules and principles of the game of rugby union. Flag Rugby is a fast paced, fun game suitable for boys and girls. The invasion nature of the game provides opportunities for players to develop a basic understanding of the principles underlying rugby and other team sports such as Soccer, basketball and hockey.

  • Figure Skating on a Roll at Pan Am Games
TUESDAY, JULY 14, 2015 SPORTS Figure skating on a roll at Pan Am Games TORONTO: When Courtney Donovan arrived for her Pan American Games roller figure skating short program and saw people in the stands an hour before the competition she was sure they were lost. It was an understandable reaction for an athlete who has spent her entire competitive career in virtual obscurity, performing in dark suburban roller arenas in front of a few dozen spectators rather than the standing room only crowd that filled the venue on Sunday to a cheer her sixth place finish. “When I saw people sitting down an hour before we started skating I knew it was going to be something big,” the American said. “I was shocked people were sitting down before I skat- ed, people are sitting down to watch us...oh my gosh. “That was probably the biggest crowd I have ever skated in front of before in my life. “A regular competition for me would basically be in a regular roller rink and the crowd might be maybe 20-25 at most. “We never skate in a big venue like this. The Pan American Games, this is like our Olympics.” The Pan Am Games is as big as it gets for the roller figure skaters, who get to march in open- ing and closing ceremonies alongside 7,000 oth- er athletes, live in the village and soak up a fac- simile of the Olympic experience that for the moment remains a distant dream. “I felt amazing; I have never had everyone out there cheering for me so there was just a lot of energy out there today,” said Canada’s Kailah Macri.

Rugby Canada AGE GRADE Law VARIATIONS FOR Community RUGBY Integrity ~ Respect ~ Solidarity ~ Passion ~ Discipline rugby.ca Vision & Mission Statement Vision To foster an inclusive, welcoming environment so that players of every shape, size, gender, age, ability, and skill level are able to participate in developmentally appropriate, controlled, competitive and enjoyable games. Use the game as the best teacher for teamwork, co-operation and respect between participants, coaches, players, officials, parents, and fans. Mission Use a player-centred, developmentally driven and competition supported model to continually assess, adapt and improve age and developmentally appropriate law variations across Canada. We seek to ensure integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect are central tenants for all considerations, decisions and variations made. Integrity – Respect – Solidarity – Passion – Discipline Mouth Guards Mouth guards are typically worn in contact sports to protect the mouth from injury. The purpose of a mouth guard is to distribute the impact of a contact situation evenly throughout the mouth, potentially reducing the chances of injury. Previous studies have indicated that the wearing of mouth guards reduces the incidence of hard and soft oral injuries, jaw fractures and neck injuries (Ranalli, 2000; Knapik et al, 2007; Newsome et al, 2001). A study in New Zealand rugby union has reported a 47% reduction in dental injury claims following the introduction of compulsory wearing of mouth guards (Quarrie et al, 2005). Age Grade
