Echoes of Paradise: the Garden and Flora in Islamic Art | Flora and Arabesques: Visions of Eternity and Divine Unity ‘When flowers are not depicted naturalistically they are often used in fantastic arrangements.’ When flowers are not depicted naturalistically in Islamic art, they are often used in more or less fantastic arrangements intended to enhance the surface of a building or an artefact to their best advantage. Such floral compositions are often so intricate that they completely distract the eye from the physical characteristics of the object they decorate or, indeed, obscure them. Buildings and artefacts may appear as if draped with carved, painted or applied floral arrangements. Primarily decorative, such floral schemes still offer spiritual minds the opportunity to contemplate the eternal complexity of the Universe, which emanates and culminates in its Creator, Allah. Patterns of Complexity: The Art and Design of Morocco and Tunisia Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad Curriculum Project 2011 Sue Uhlig, Continuing Lecturer in Art and Design at Purdue University Religious Diversity in the Maghreb From June 12 to July 21, 2011, I was one of sixteen post-secondary educators who participated in the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad program to Morocco and Tunisia. During those six weeks, we were immersed in the culture of the two North African countries, visiting significant historical and cultural attractions, attending lectures daily, tasting regional cuisine, and taking Arabic language classes for the first two weeks. The topic of the seminar was “Religious Diversity in the Maghreb: Morocco and Tunisia,” so lectures were focused primarily on Islamic topics, such as Moroccan Islam and Sufism, with some topics covering Judaism. We were treated to two musical performances, one relating to Judeo-Spanish Moroccan narrative songs and the other by Gnawa musicians. Visits to Christian churches, Jewish museums and synagogues, and Islamic mosques rounded out the religious focus. The group was in Morocco for a total of four weeks and Tunisia for two. The Muslim designers finished various art, artifacts, religious objects, and buildings with many types of ornamentation such as geometry, epigraphy, calligraphy, arabesque, and sometimes animal figures. Among them, the most universal motif in ornamentation which was extensively used is the arabesque. The arabesque is an abstract and rhythmic vegetal ornamentation pattern in Islamic decoration. It is found in a wide variety of media such as book art, stucco, stonework, ceramics, tiles, metalwork, textiles, carpets, etc.. The paper discusses the fact that arabesque is a unique, universal, and vital element of ornamentation within the framework of Islamic Architecture. In this paper, the etymological roots of the term ‘Arabesque’, its evolution and development have been explored. The general characteristics as well as different modes of arabesque are discussed. This paper also analyses the presentation of arabesque with specific reference to Indian and Persian Islamic heritage buildings. INTRODUCTION The term ‘Arabesque’ is an obsolete European form of rebesk (or rebesco), not an Arabic word dating perhaps from the 15th or 16th century when Renaissance artists used Islamic Designs for book ornament and decorative bookbinding [1]. -

Basandosi sull'interpretazione di alcuni passi del Corano e facendo riferimento agli hadith, i discorsi del Profeta, alcuni dottori della legge hanno sviluppato un'argomentazione secondo la quale la raffigurazione di esseri viventi, essendo contraria alla volontà divina, fosse da condannare. Questo atteggiamento dipende dall'opinione dei giuristi, secondo i quali, riprodurre un'immagine di un essere vivente dotato del soffio vitale, significherebbe contraffare l'opera divina della creazione1. E' probabile che un tale atteggiamento dogmatico abbia distolto gli artisti dalle arti figurative anche se non risulta che questa legge sia mai stata formulata, né che sia stata rispettata con lo stesso rigore in ogni epoca e in ogni luogo. I resti archeologici omayyadi conservano molte tracce di una decorazione architettonica di natura figurativa2 ed esistono testimonianze appartenenti alle epoche abbaside e ghaznavide ma sono tutte collocate in residenze reali, cioè in edifici che diversamente dai luoghi di culto, sfuggono ad implicazioni di tipo religioso3. -

It also featured an interdisciplinary team-taught Year of Morocco (YoM) course that included a study abroad experience to Morocco (March 28-April 7, 2019), an academic conference on “Gender, Identity, and Youth Empowerment in Morocco” (March 15-16, 2019), and this dedicated special issue of the Journal of Global Initiatives. Most events were organized through six different College Spotlights titled: The Taste of Morocco; Experiencing Moroccan Visual Arts; Multiple Literacies in Morocco; Conflict Management, Peacebuilding, and Development Challenges in Morocco, Moroccan Cultural Festival; and Moroccan Solar Tree. -

Zoology A • Chess The game of chess was introduced to the Muslim world by the Persians, who had imported it first from India. The game became widely popular among men and women because of its difficulty and intellectual challenge. Caliphs (rulers) would invite champions of the game to chess matches at their palaces. The Muslims continued to adapt and improve the game. Eventually the introduced chess to Europeans, who played it widely from the thirteenth century on. What I would write • Chess was brought to the Muslim world from India • Muslims played it because it was intellectually challenging • Muslims made improvements to the game and eventually introduced it to Europe B • Irrigation Because water was so scarce in the desert regions of the Islamic Empire, Muslims developed ingenious irrigation techniques and utilized underground wells. Dams, reservoirs, and aqueducts were constructed throughout the Islamic Empire as early as the tenth century. Muslims also perfected the water wheel, a technique that could be operated by man, animals or the wind. When an upright pole connected to a series of geared wheels was turned, four water scoops, rising one after another , emptied their contents into a canal. -

ZILLIJ CRAFTSMANSHIP Morocco is known for its Zellij art, covered with complex geometric, arabesque and beautiful, rich patterns. Such Moroccan art has been influenced by a diversity of cultures which made of this art today a cultural icon of the Moroccan identity .. The Zellij art has witnessed enormous transitions and transformations across eras; Romans,Vandals, Visigoths, Byzantine Greeks but the Arabs who introduced their Islamic civilization in the late 7th century to Morocco made the main and the most resitant influence among all. To sum up, the infusion of Islamic thought into every aspect of daily life became a prominent influence for Zellij design. The key success to such art is held in hands of talented Maâlems (master craftsmen) who were trained at a young age to master the keys of assiduous details , a handful talent for shaping, painting and assembling pieces to create such wonderful artworks . As time goes by, and technologies becomes more sophisticated, the process and design become easier nowadays. The abundance and variety of flower motifs and pattern continue to influence artists and designers today. In Islamic societies floral patterns were applied to a huge range of artefacts and objects, from coffee cups to compasses. As Islam spread from Spain to the Indonesian Archipelago, designs evolved and adapted reflecting time and place. Exploring Plant based decoration is an easily accessible way to appreciate and understand Islam and Islamic Art and Design.
