Blumhardt, formerly of the Bengal Civil Service, who has for several years been employed in cataloguing the works in the North Indian Vernaculars in the Museum Library. It is, perhaps, the first attempt that has been made to arrange Bengali writings under authors' names ; and the principles on which this has been done are fulh stated in the Preface. GEO. PEEFACE In submitting to the public the present Catalogue of Bengali books contained in the Library of the British Museum the compiler finds it necessary to explain the general principles of cataloguing adopted by him, and the special rules laid down for the treatment of Oriental names of authors and books. He has tried to observe throughout one consistent plan of transliteration, based on intelligible principles of etymology, yet rejecting alike the popular mode of writing names according to their modern pronunciation, and the pedantic system of referring everything back to its original Sanskrit form ; thereby making unnecessary deviations from proper Bengali idiom. -

The Bhakti Cycle of Assamese Lyrics: Bargits and After Maheswar Neog --- www.atributetosankaradeva.org presents before the readers a pioneering paper on the Vaisnava music of Assam, authored by Dr. Maheswar Neog. It covers virtually every aspect of the devotional lyric of the Sankaradeva Movement (and also traces its progress through time). This paper was written in the early part of the latter half of the 20th century when Bargit research was still at a nascent stage. Editing note(s):- Diacritics has been used sparingly; generally only the long diacritic (macron) pertaining to a/A has been highlighted and that too, depending upon the context. --- Introduction In the latter half of the fifteenth century Sankaradeva (1449-1568 A.D.), a Kayastha by caste, founded a school of neo-Vaisnavism in Assam. This religion has a monotheistic doctrine based on the Bhagavata Purana and is called Eka-Sarana Nama- Dharma. It enjoins the worship of the one Supreme Deity or Visnu, specially in His incarnation as Krsna and interdicts its followers from the worship of any other god or goddess. The Radha-Krsna cult is not acknowledged in his system of Vaisnavism. Of the different modes of bhakti or devotion, the dasya (servile) mode was insisted upon by Sankaradeva. (Dr. B. Kakati, The Mother Goddess Kamakhya, 1948, pp. 75-77). The attitude of the votary is to look upon Krsna - not as a play-mate as in sakhya (friendship), not as one’s child as in vatsalya (filial love), not as the male lover as in madhura (conjugal love), nor as an impersonal Being as in santa rasa (calm sentiment) - but as the master demanding love and veneration of the devotee as of a servant. -

Our senses of ourselves and of our society are in dialectical relation with our sense of whether or to what degree we feel part of important dimensions such as religion and politics, which are both an expression of our identity and factors that may sometimes change our identity. In modern western society it seems that identity has shifted from what Charles Taylor calls “embeddedness” in religion to a mode of life where religion is, to a great extent, expected to be a personal matter and even a personal choice. This is not impossible to understand, and historical work shows us that there are important continuities between the modern reason that rejects religion and the religion that it rejects. -

It is great not for any worldly possessions but for the priceless possession of spiritualism and the leading luminaries of Vedic Literature. “When people in other countries were still using barks for clothes and lived in tree-holes and caves, Aryans, in Aryan land, on the banks of river Saraswati were singing hymns of God and were far advanced in civilization” (Yogi Guru/English/p-1). Vedas are India’s treasure. India is proud and honored for Vedic Religion, Sanatana Dharma. Sanatana Dharma is eternal. This eternal possession of our beloved mother land Aryabarta Bharatbarsha is our religion. Swami Nigamananda is a pioneer preacher of Sanatana Dharma the oldest order of religions of the world. His philosophy synthesizes knowledge and love (Bhakti). The union of Sankara and Gouranga is the synopsis of his life time contribution. His finding is one of the most important features of Sanatan Dharma. He dedicated his life for the cause of Sanatan Dharma. He is unique to get Nirbikalpa Sidhi of Vedanta and realizing the ultimate truth of this ephemeral universe in a shortest period of time frame. Only the one who can show all of them the way to lead a righteous life can be called a Jagadguru . There is no doubt that Adi Sankara was such a Jagadguru . Sankara gave upadesa in jnana to those who wished to tread the path of knowledge. In his works, he has given extensive advice on jnana . For those people who could not go along the jnana marga , he taught karma yoga . His valuable advice to chant the Vedas daily and do the prescribed karmas was meant for those following the path of duty. For those who were unable to follow this advice, he prescribed the way of bhakti . As he said, such people will find it useful to recite the Gita and Vishnusahasranama and think of Hari at all times. The paths of karma , bhakti and jnana are thus conducive to man’s welfare. Adi Sankara who prescribed these various yogas for all people is indeed worshipful.
