Open Theology 2017; 3: 257–273 Phenomenology of Religious Experience Open Access Olga Louchakova-Schwartz* Qualia of God: Phenomenological Materiality in Introspection, with a Reference to Advaita Vedanta DOI 10.1515/opth-2017-0021 Received March 14, 2017; accepted April 26, 2017 Abstract: Applying Michel Henry’s philosophical framework to the phenomenological analysis of religious experience, the author introduces a concept of material introspection and a new theory of the constitution of religious experience in phenomenologically material interiority. As opposed to ordinary mental self-scrutiny, material introspection happens when the usual outgoing attention is reverted onto embodied self-awareness in search of mystical self-knowledge or union with God. Such reversal posits the internal field of consciousness with the self-disclosure of phenomenological materiality. As shown by the example of Vedantic self-inquiry, material introspection is conditioned on the attitude ‘I “see” myself’ and employs reductions which relieve phenomenological materiality from the structuring influence of intentionality; the telos of material introspection is expressed by the inward self-transcendence of intentional consciousness into purified phenomenological materiality. Experience in material introspection is constituted by the self-affection and self-luminosity of phenomenological materiality; experience is recognized as religious due to such essential properties as the capacity of being self- fulfilled, and specific qualitative “what it’s like”(s). -

THE PHILOSOPHY OF SWAMI SWAMI NIGAMANANDA SANGRAM KESHARI MALLIK Research Scholar, Utkal University of Culture, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India ABSTRACT India is great. It is great not for any worldly possessions but for the priceless possession of spiritualism and the leading luminaries of Vedic Literature. “When people in other countries were still using barks for clothes and lived in tree-holes and caves, Aryans, in Aryan land, on the banks of river Saraswati were singing hymns of God and were far advanced in civilization” (Yogi Guru/English/p-1). Vedas are India’s treasure. India is proud and honored for Vedic Religion, Sanatana Dharma. Sanatana Dharma is eternal. This eternal possession of our beloved mother land Aryabarta Bharatbarsha is our religion. Swami Nigamananda is a pioneer preacher of Sanatana Dharma the oldest order of religions of the world. His philosophy synthesizes knowledge and love (Bhakti). The union of Sankara and Gouranga is the synopsis of his life time contribution. His finding is one of the most important features of Sanatan Dharma. He dedicated his life for the cause of Sanatan Dharma. He is unique to get Nirbikalpa Sidhi of Vedanta and realizing the ultimate truth of this ephemeral universe in a shortest period of time frame. Nigamananda who was an engineer by profession got married to an elegant lady Sudhansubala, whose death was incidental in the change of his life. -

Only the one who can show all of them the way to lead a righteous life can be called a Jagadguru . There is no doubt that Adi Sankara was such a Jagadguru . Sankara gave upadesa in jnana to those who wished to tread the path of knowledge. In his works, he has given extensive advice on jnana . For those people who could not go along the jnana marga , he taught karma yoga . His valuable advice to chant the Vedas daily and do the prescribed karmas was meant for those following the path of duty. For those who were unable to follow this advice, he prescribed the way of bhakti . As he said, such people will find it useful to recite the Gita and Vishnusahasranama and think of Hari at all times. The paths of karma , bhakti and jnana are thus conducive to man’s welfare. Adi Sankara who prescribed these various yogas for all people is indeed worshipful. Hinduism Vedanta: The Way of Wisdom Vedanta: The Way of Wisdom Summary: Historically, Vedanta refers to the Upanishads or wisdom “at the end of the Veda.” Vedanta is also a philosophical teaching that requires a transfer of revolutionary knowledge (jnana) through the guidance of a teacher (guru). The term Vedanta refers, first, to the Upanishads, those teachings that stand at the “end of the Veda.” But these teachings also stand at the beginning of India’s traditions of philosophical reflection. There are several systems of philosophy, called darshanas or “viewpoints.” One of them, perhaps the most influential, is known specifically as Vedanta. Among its most famous advocates is the philosopher Shankara (c. 8th century CE). The Upanishads ask, “What is the foundation of all that is?” “What is the nature of the soul?” “What is the relation of this soul to that foundation?” Shankara asserts the identity, or at least “non-duality” of Brahman, the foundational reality, and Atman, the soul. The phenomenal universe, he says, is related to the oneness of this Reality as waves are manifest in the sea. According to Vedanta, however, the real “answers” to these kinds of questions require not simply book- learning, but deep insight. This insight is called jnana. It is revolutionary wisdom, turning one’s consciousness toward Brahman. It is enlightening, transforming wisdom. This alone, they say, is the gateway to the spiritual freedom that is called moksha, liberation. Wisdom is difficult to acquire on one’s own. It is the teacher, the guru, who guides one along the spiritual path. The teachings of the Upanishads were never intended to be published for anyone to buy. -

Satsanga with Sri Swami Viditatmananda Saraswati Arsha Vidya Gurukulam Brahman, Éçvara, and Other Gods in Hinduism Question Would you please talk about the relationship between Brahman and éçvara? Answer The relationship between Brahman and éçvara is similar to the relationship that exists between an actor and the role he plays. Imagine an actor playing the role of king. What is the relationship between the actor and the king? A relationship requires two entities; it can only be played out between two separate entities. Can there be a relationship between the actor and the king? No, there cannot be because they are the same entity. Then why do you use two names? Why do you say ‘actor’ and ‘king’ if, in fact, there is only one entity? This is because the actor is a king from the standpoint of his costume and the function that he performs. So also, Brahman alone is éçvara. When Brahman wears the costume of ‘mäyä’, He becomes creator, sustainer, and dissolver. Therefore, from the standpoint of being in the costume of mäyä, Brahman is called éçvara. Just as from the standpoint of the costume we call the actor a king or a beggar, so also, Brahman alone is éçvara. Brahman and éçvara are not different from each other in the same way as an ornament and the gold of which it is made are not different. The gold alone is called the ornament. Similarly, Brahman alone is called éçvara. From the standpoint of the creation, Brahman is creator, sustainer, and dissolver. It is in these roles that Brahman is éçvara. -

This book contains well over a hundred edifying parables of our Acharyal compiled by a disciple and grouped over 97 heads. The sources of the parables are Acharyal’s benedictory addresses and His private conversations with the disciple. Following are the minor liberties that have been taken in the preparation of the text: 1. Parables narrated by Acharyal in more than one benedictory address have been grouped under a single head. 2. In rare cases, names have been given to the characters of a story even when Acharyal did not do so during His talk with the disciple. 3.
