Physical Education 2020: End of Year Celebration

Welcome

Welcome to this special newsletter. We have had a fantastic year of sports this year and want to celebrate all that our extra-curricular sports teams have achieved. Sadly we have been unable to launch our inaugural Sports Personality of the Year Awards Evening and so we have put together this sporting review in which we present reports for each sport and team from Year 7 through to the sixth form. We are extremely proud of the enthusiasm, commitment and success of our St Bart’s students, and we are pleased to be able to celebrate this with you.

For each week of the challenges so far St Bart’s has been awarded the Spirit of the Games certificate reflecting the large number of students that we have had competing in the Virtual School Games - this is a tremendous achievement. A huge well done and thank you to all of you who have taken part in these challenges and for all the photos and videos of you competing. As a school you have been excellent and deserve all the success you achieved.

Year 7 Lacrosse Back in September, we travelled to Heathfield School where the girls played in their first Lacrosse fixture for St Bart’s. For the majority of the match we dominated in attack and were quick to prevent counter attacks from our opposition. Despite only training together for a few weeks and still learning the rules, the girl’s performance was exceptional. As a result, we won 11-1, with Heathfield awarding player of the match to Scarlett John, Beatrix Busby and Chloe Shore.

Our next match saw us face Godolphin away. Godolphin took an early lead, but we continued to battle. Throughout the match Godolphin played amazingly and sadly we lost 14-3. However, I was extremely proud of the girls for not giving up against a stronger and more experienced team, this would certainly not define the rest of our season. Godolphin awarded Helena Van Blerk and Anna Delavere players of the match.

Having lost against Godolphin, the girls’ attitude and determination against St George’s Ascot were still strong. Just like in their first game against Heathfield, the girls dominated in attack and were quick to defend. St Bart’s led the whole game, with the final score ending in a 10-3 win for St Bart’s. St George’s awarded player of the match to Chloe Shore and Helena Van Blerk.

Our next two fixtures took us away to play St Mary’s Calne and St Helen’s and St Katherine’s. Unfortunately, we lost 13-3 to St Mary’s Calne and lost 10-3 to St Helen’s and St Katharine’s. Players of the match for these games were Chloe Shore (x2), Helena Van Blerk and Anna Delavere.

Rendcomb were our next opponents and coming back from two defeats was going to be tough. We had a slow start and Rendcomb were first to take the lead (0-1), but this did not stop our girls. Once we found our pace there was no stopping us. Goal after goal our lead against Rendcomb increased. The game gave us a 7-2 victory with Rendcomb awarding players of the match to Sophia Warner and Helena Van Blerk.

Up next was the Berkshire Lacrosse tournament. It was here where we would face previous teams in hope to become Berkshire Champions. Due to playing short games, the girls found it difficult to find their feet. However, despite a slow start, overall the girls won 2 out of their 5 games which saw them place third in the tournament. Players of the tournament were awarded to Immy Duly and Claudia Curtis.

Godolphin was our seventh and final fixture of the season. We had won 3 and lost 3 of our matches in total, therefore this game would determine whether or not we finished with more wins than losses. In our previous game against Godolphin we lost 14-3, but our spirits were high. The game began and we were in full force. The team who had previously lost against Godolphin looked like a new team. It was this game where you could see just how far the girls had progressed since starting lacrosse in September. Their movement, accuracy and fluidity strived throughout the game and I could not be any prouder. We finished our last game with a 13-1 win. Godolphin awarded Immy Duly and Claudia Curtis players of the match.

I am extremely proud of how the Year 7 Lacrosse season has gone. We have had our wins and losses, but you cannot fault their positive attitude and willingness to succeed, both on and off the pitch. The girls are full of energy and have been lovely to work with.

A special thank you to Mrs John who supported the running of the team, attending training sessions and fixtures.

Year 8 Lacrosse What a fantastic season with year 8 lacrosse! It has been an absolute pleasure to coach the Year 8 team this year. This side has an abundance of natural talent and skilled players, and approached every game with determination and great spirit. The clear progression throughout the season and finishing with just two losses, it has really been a fantastic year in terms of lacrosse. In addition, it has been a pleasure to have new faces at training and seeing new players develop over the season and taking part in their first matches.

Our first match was at home against St. Helen’s and St Katharine’s. After a few early goals from the visiting team, the St. Bart’s team pulled together and the final result was 7-3 to the visiting team. After this match our objectives became clear; to work the ball around the team Smiles all round at Heathfield's and to work together incorporating set plays. Izzy John was nominated by the other team as player of the match. The next game resulted in a draw against Downe House, where Emily Cox was chosen as attacker of the game and Pippa Faithful, goalie, as defender of the match. A respectable 5-5 draw against the notorious Downe House team. From this point onwards it went from success to success, a fantastic win (7-6) against Heathfield with Annabel Maclean identified as a real strength in attack.. A highlight of the season was an 11-7 defeat of Godolphin where Kirstin Butler impressed us all with her unrelenting runs across the pitch. We defeated St. George’s 8-0 where this time St George’s awarded India Duly and Kirstin Fraser as stand out players.

Even in the difficult matches, our objectives of working together were coming through and the team were clearly developing together. This led to a fantastic win against Rendcomb where Ellie Upton was key to the team’s success. We ended the season on a high with an 11-2 win against Queen Anne’s which meant that we finished the season in good spirits. In the Berkshire tournament at Queen Anne’s, St Bart’s came an impressive 2nd place and Annabel Maclean and India Duly both demonstrated fantastic ability on pitch.

The progress throughout the season is clear when comparing our two games against Godolphin. At the start of the year we won 11-7 and by February we had a victory of 23-0, where Maddie Macanally was recognised by the opposing team as being player of the match.

Once we had worked out our best combinations in terms of attack, and managed to keep up sustained pressure on the opposition we grew into a formidable team. Led at the back by our charismatic goalie Pippa Faithfull, who improved with every game as her confidence grew, we were able to keep the opposition off balance with storming runs from the back, namely Kirsten Fraser, Josephine Winchester and Annabel Maclean, who were a sight to behold in full flight. Kirstin Butler controlled the back field like a general and was a solid defender. Our midfield all combined to provide the link to our attack namely Imogen Ciocin, Sophie Livingstone, Lara Doran, Hannah Cox, Francesca Parsons and Ellie Upton.

Our attacking unit led by Izzy John and India Duly with great support from Lucy Bosley, Emily Cox, Tilly Healey, Imogen Moon and Maddie Macanally were extremely effective and aggressive. Other girls who played for the side during the year were Alice Johnstone, Libby Caroll, Isabella Castle, Mia Harding, Eva Barker and Lily Newman, their progress throughout the season has been really impressive and it has been rewarding to watch them go from strength to strength.

Serious faces when playing Godolphin - It paid off!

As the season progressed and confidence grew, their passing around the fan and behind goal was impressive. It is unfortunate that they were not able to display their full potential at Nationals as we feel they would have done very well A special thank you goes to our captains this season: Izzy John and Josephine Winchester. The matches punctuate well what a fantastic season of lacrosse looks like, plenty of wins and a few losses but the real pleasure with this team is at practice. Rarely do you get a team that is so enthusiastic, driven and collegiate as this team and this was most evident, week by week in Wednesday training come rain or shine, which is a true credit to them all. As per our results, we were one of the most successful side in lacrosse this year and we look forward to watching you develop as a side over the next few years.

Player of the season: India Duly

To all the girls, we both thank you for your passion and dedication; we will have many good memories of the 2019/2020 year 8 Team. Miss Brown and Mr Philp

Overall player of the season goes to Alex Royston who was consistently good throughout the whole season and her performances all day at the Lacrosse National School Tournament 2020 makes her a worthy winner of this award.

Miss Ostinelli Year 10 Lacrosse This was a tremendous season for the year 10 lacrosse squad – their hard work and dedication throughout the season enabled them to achieve some excellent results which are reflected in this report.

The season started with our first fixture against St Helens and St Katharine's, players of the match were Gemma Moon and Izzy Smithson. A loss of 4 – 11 was not to be repeated when the team played St Helens and St Katharine's in the Spring Term, the game was closely fought and reflected how the squad had developed their skills and game play with a narrow loss of 8 – 9. Players of the match were Georgia Humphreys and Charlotte Swanson.

An early season match against a very fast and fit Downe House squad saw a loss of 6 -12 with players of the match being awarded to Georgia Humphreys and Izzy Duly.

Other memorable fixtures include Marlborough where the team won 10 -2, players of the match were Gemma Moon and Lottie Langley. Against Heathfield the squad had another good victory winning 19 -3, players were Georgia Humphreys and Annabel Gibson.

Our first fixture against Godolphin who are highly skilled opposition saw a draw of 7 -7 which was a fantastic achievement. Players of this match were Gemma Moon, Izzy Duly and Annabel Gibson. A re match against Godolphin later in the season saw a narrow loss to St Barts of 8 -10 which is still a score to be very proud of. Players of this match were Annabel Gibson and Charlotte Swanson.

In the Spring term against St Mary’s Calne the squad suffered quite a heavy defeat of 2 - 16 despite every effort to try to contain the fast and feisty opposition. Players of the match were awarded to Annabel Gibson and Gemma Moon.

Drawing ever closer to the Nationals there was one last fixture against Queen Anne's – this was an excellent game especially as the squad came away with a very well-deserved victory winning 14 – 12, perfect preparation for the Nationals! Players of the match were Izzy Duly and Gemma Moon.

The pinnacle of the season arrived - National Schools Lacrosse Tournament! On a surprisingly sunny day given the torrential rain that had fallen a couple of days prior, the year 10 girls were fully ready for the day ahead – a culmination of their seasons hard work and training. They were absolute superstars throughout the day working tirelessly with sheer determination. Their efforts were fully rewarded with the squad making it through to the quarter finals…. To play St Helens and St Katharine's! Sadly, they narrowly lost 2 – 5 but they should be exceptionally proud of their huge achievement on this day and throughout the season.

Thank you to all of you for such a great season – I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching you and watching you grow and develop as talented lacrosse players.

Fellow year 13’s Mia Eldridge, Siena Edwards and Jess Raines have supported throughout the season and helped the year 11’s settle quickly into the team. I’d like to thank all of the Year 13 players for their commitment to lacrosse throughout the years, it has been a privilege to see you develop into the amazing young people you are today.

Miss Thorne Year 7 Rugby – the future of the Green and White Hoops is in good hands!

First match of the season - over 50 boys played against Westgate School - for many it was their first ever match.

The year 7 rugby team had a super season. Over 50 boys enthusiastically attended training, and over 50 boys represented the school during the course of the Autumn Term in both friendlies and the league. The season focused on trying to including as many boys as possible, and it wasn’t until the end of the season that we fielded what was close to a possible A team squad for the Berkshire Festival.

After the first few weeks of training sessions the boys played their first matches in the green and white hoops, hosting Westgate school on Luker Field. Everyone who had trained was invited to play, and this meant lots of rolling substitutions, but everyone played a full part.

The league fixtures were organised into triangular fixtures where schools played more than one school on one day.

Half of the squad played for the A team over two triangular tournaments - each playing at least a match or two halves. In the first triangular the boys played two games and won three out of the four halves. Final scores: lost 1-4 to John O'Gaunt, beat Trinity 4-1. In the second triangular they played a very close match against Kennet and beat the Downs. Some players of the matches were Jimmy Shakespeare (Capt), Alex Comley Casabella, Dillon Bacchus, Rhys Kemp, Alex Hutchinson, Eoghan Lamb, James Fenner and Jack Collings.

The other half of the squad represented the Year 7 B team in two different triangular tournaments against Trinity and Kennet, and Park House and Trinity. Players of the matches were Joe Coley, Alfie Lewis, Sam Mildenhall and Kaden Bamfield. Kaden scored three excellent solo tries.

The strength and depth of the St Bart’s squad was very evident, and although the B team didn’t win, we never fielded our strongest B team (as those players were part of the A team squad) and some opposition schools didn’t always have enough for a B team, and so fielded their A teams! At the County Festival the boys qualified for pool 2 (second from top) out of 10 after a draw and two wins in the morning at . In the afternoon they won their first match 5-0 v Thorpe House, and then played two closely fought games against Furze Platt and Claires Court - conceding only one against the run of play try in each game. Although in Year 7 it is a waterfall tournament (no winners and losers), we can say that unofficially the boys came 7th out of 50 teams.

The season was rounded off with some fantastic house matches, and some very competitive matches during after school training, where the progress that everyone had made was really evident, and the boys were keen to play on as long as the dwindling December daylight allowed.

Last training session of the season - numbers still very strong!

We're sure the boys will be looking forward to even more success in their next Rugby Season!

Next season, as and when it comes, will be a very exciting one. We are confident that this fantastic group of rugby players will go from strength to strength as they progress up through the school.

–how many of the faces in these pictures will be representing the 1st XV in a few years’ time?

Player of the season: Jimmy Shakespeare

Mr Bateman and Mr Harmer Year 8 Rugby Preseason: The St Bart’s year 8 squad travelled to Park House for a friendly, to prepare players for the season ahead. Despite losing the fixture 40-5, the work rate from all was fantastic, showing passion and determination from all players who gave 100% all the way to the final whistle. The man of the match award for the 1st half went to William Spain, who made a numerous amount of important tackles preventing the score line from being larger. The man of the match for the second half was Tom Fountain, again, superb throughout encouraging all players to give their all to the end.

Year 8 B team: The floodlit league for the B team was underway with fixtures against Park House and Kennet. The results were disappointing losing both fixtures; 5-0 to Park House and 20-10 to Kennet. Great team performances in both fixtures and good signs that the squad was starting to improve from previous areas of development from the preseason fixture against Park House. Joint MOM’s were James Humphreys and Charlie Cooper, both excellent in tackles and motivating others to focus on the task ahead.

St Bart’s had prepared well for their returning fixtures in the floodlit league vs Park House and Kennet. The first match was against Kennet which ended in a 15-0 loss, in which the score line did not reflect the performance, and the lads played some great rugby in spells but struggled to get the ball over the line. Again, a disappointing result against Park House losing the match 20-0, however there were still lots of positives to take from this game, but also lots of things to work on and improve. MOM from the Kennet game was Liam Clinton who made some great tackles from the wing. MOM’s from the Parkhouse game were Will Spain and Aiden Moffatt, who made some excellent tackles and have been leaders on and off the pitch throughout the season.

Year 8 A team: The A team squad began their floodlit league journey against Park House and The Downs. We lost 15-5 against Park House, which was a huge improvement on the preseason and similar to the B team, the performances really improved, which is down to their commitment in lessons and at rugby training. Unfortunately, the boys were not able to bring home the win against The Downs losing 10-0, however, despite the results, all players had the St Bart’s spirit and fight all the way to the end. The MOM’s for the Park House fixture were the A team's number 9 and 10, Beau Power and Luca Dessiaume who displayed some superb distribution throughout both fixtures. The MOM’s from The Downs match were Spencer Codling and Tom Oxley who continued to show heart and passion all the way to the final whistle.

We had a breakthrough and the squad got their first floodlit league win against Trinity School, winning 30-5. It was a great team performance and some very impressive individual play. MOM was Drew Street for getting his hat trick with three excellent tries! The second fixture of the evening was against Park House which we lost 10-5. This was a huge improvement due to losing to Park House 40-5 in the first game of the season. MOM was Braydon Jackson for a very impressive solo try. Success at Reading Bluecoat festival: On Thursday 24th October, a mixture of A and B players took part in a rugby festival at Reading Bluecoat School. All players were excited about playing at their wonderful facilities, and of course missing a day of school. The tournament begun with a morning pool of teams, and depending how successful you were you would go into an afternoon pool. Our first game of the tournament was a success winning 20-5 against Desborough School. MOM’s were Harry Stacey and Tom Oxley, who were excellent at preventing the opposition from making ground. The second proved a little difficult, however, the boys’ determination managed to secure them a draw, with the score being 10- 10. MOM’s were Spencer Codling for picking up a numerous amount of loose balls, and making some excellent tackles on our try line to ensure we would draw the match, and Freddie Stewart for a great solo try. St Bart’s found themselves sitting at the top of the table with one match to go. Unfortunately, we were not able to secure the top spot with a 20-0 defeat to Reading Bluecoat A team, however, the score line did not reflect the performance and the boys competed very well against the tournament favourites. MOM was Beau Power who was superb during the transitions and moving the ball at speed. Our results in the morning pool meant that we had finished joint 2nd, but 3rd on goal difference. This meant that we put into a competitive pool for the afternoon fixtures. Our first game was against Edgebarrow which ended in a scoreless draw. MOM’s were Drew Street and Luca Dessaiume who were brilliant at motivating all players in horrific conditions. Due to the conditions, it was becoming immensely difficult to move and handle the ball. The second fixture was against a strong Sandhurst squad, in which we lost 15-5. MOM was Braydon Jackson who scored what had to be try of the tournament, weaving in and out and dodging tackles from left, right and centre. The tournament organisers postponed the final game due to the weather conditions that were unplayable, and it was not safe for students to continue. Despite the scoring in the afternoon, the day was very successful for all students.

Player of the season: Beau Power. Mr Fry

Year 9 Rugby The year 9 rugby team have seen one of the greatest transformations this academic year in terms of results and progression on the rugby field. The boys have bonded well as a team and now have a strong squad moving forward into year 10 to build on further. With a County Cup quarter- final, four wins in seven games, one draw and only two defeats this demonstrates the progress made by a great bunch of players. Armand Graham was selected as captain and was excellent in his duties on and off the field. He has written a piece to sum up the season from his point of view.

“This season our rugby team has improved so much. We went from a group of players struggling to find form in year 8 to a brilliant unit winning most of our matches. One match that stands out is our final game against The Downs, who are primarily made up of the Newbury A team, that we won with relative ease 28-17. A match that most of us thought would go the other way but it just goes to show how much we have developed and how well we work together. It is hard to name stand out players as we have all performed brilliantly but two players that come to mind are Louis Moore, providing us with blistering pace on the wing, and Jake Tillen at scrum half, who gave us creative skill in our attack and solidity in the defence. I also want to say thank you to my teammates who have put in a massive effort this year, playing so well and Mr Harmer for coaching us so we have the confidence to perform so well. I am very excited for next season. I believe that our run of form will continue in the build-up to a hopefully successful South Africa tour in April 2021.” Armand Graham – Y9 Rugby Captain.

Year 10 Rugby - County Cup Finalists!

The year 10 rugby team started the 2019-20 season on a high, having recently returned from a successful rugby tour to Toronto, Canada. This is another year group has real strength and depth, and this was shown in the early season friendly match against Park House where every player in the 30- man squad played at least a half, and won 73-5. The boys also beat Forest 45-7, man of the match was Ben Kaisser for his hard work throughout the match, winning a lot of ball at the breakdown and demonstrating how invaluable he is for the team. The boys finished the season undefeated in the Newbury Schools league.

In the National Vase Competition St Bart’s beat Kennet 45-7, players of the match were Luke Boyt and Will Stearn.

One of the closest matches of the season was when the boys travelled to Liphook in to play Bohunt in the last 32 of the South West Area National Vase.

St Bart's played brilliantly in defence and attack, and looked the more creative team with ball in hand. The small pitch played into the hands of the larger Bohunt side. 15 mins in Haaris Begg hobbled off with a hip injury, Fin Allen went from scrum half to flanker and Nathan Delavere came on at number 9. A successful kick chase and lucky bounce saw Bohunt scoring and converting. An injury to back rower Will Stearn meant that Bart's went down to 14 men, but soon fought back with a 3-point penalty score - George Shakespeare intelligently electing to kick for the posts. The half time score 3-7 in Bohunt's favour. The second half was a very close affair, but St Bart's started to move the ball wider and continued to kick tactically. In the last few minutes of normal time, the ball was passed slickly through the hands out the man of the match Teague Pasea who kicked downfield, outpaced his opposite number, and re-gathered the ball to score under the posts. Normal time 10-10. The 5 mins extra time either way was extremely close. Bohunt kicked a penalty to take the lead, but despite the St Bart's boys’ efforts the final whistle blew with the final score ending up 10-13 to Bohunt. Notable mentions must go to Sam Robinson's high ball catch return running, and Elliot Crouch's tackling. All players did the school proud.

The highlight of the year 10’s season has to be the county cup. They actually played their first match of the season in the cup, travelling away to play Reading Boys School. Following an unfortunate injury to captain Josh Lefever, the whole team played for each other, eventually winning 26-5. One highlight of that match was when winger Teague Pasea chipped ahead, chased his own kick, gathered the ball that pitched up with a favourable bounce, and scored under the posts.

In the quarterfinal beat regional rivals Forest 22-14. Man of the match was Cole Whorriskey for his relentless tackling and work rate throughout. Next came the semi-final against Holyport, a match in which the boys played some lovely one to fifteen team rugby where they played numerous phases of possession through skilful offloading and moving the ball slickly through the hands to score several tries in the corner. Man of the match was Seb Burgess who made numerous metres with ball in hand, tackled all game, and was first numerous rucks. The final score was St Bart’s 45 Holyport 7.

The final match of the season was the County Cup Final at Maidenhead RFC. St Bart’s played Reading Blue Coat School in an extremely close match. Blue Coat got off to an early lead, scoring after putting pressure on St Bart’s at the lineout. St Bart’s came back into the match, and enjoyed more phases of possession, forcing Blue Coat to make numerous tackles, and some tactical kicking to space from fly half George Shakespeare opened up the game and kept the play in Blue Coat’s half of the pitch. The first half was quite evenly matched, with Blue Coat leading going into half time, but St Bart’s hadn’t quite found top gear. After the half time team talk, St Bart’s started the second half the stronger team, working the phases to maintain possession in the forwards, and moving the ball well through the hands in the backs, combined with excellent ruck work at the breakdown, meant that St Bart’s had some good possession and started to make some exciting breaks through the likes of Josh Lefever and Elliot Crouch. This resulted in an excellent try by Josh, which was converted by George Shakespeare. George also kicked an excellent penalty goal. In the last quarter either team could have won, but in the end Reading Blue Coat scored one more converted try, and kicked two penalty goals to St Bart’s one, to finish the victors. Final score St Bart’s 10 Reading Blue Coat 20.

Senior Rugby – 1st XV and Year 11 The Seniors Rugby Team had a very enjoyable season with some great moments throughout. While there were some tough draws in the cup competitions, there was some great wins in the West Berkshire League and a fantastic match against the ONA in December to round off the season. Before getting into the results, we would like to thank legendary coach Mr McGall for all his work with the senior rugby over the years. We’d also like to thank our sponsors CM Commercial Engineering Services, who provided our superb and much needed new shirts for this season, and the platform for the players to purchase training kit. Whether we win or lose we’ve certainly looked professional!

Our season began with the pre-season friendly tournament with Park House, The Downs and Kennet, which gave the boys the chance to shake the rust off. Competitive rugby then began with a national cup game against old rivals Kennet. In a frantic and end-to-end game in the heat, Kennet eventually outlasted us and thanks to some great broken field running from their back 3, ran out 29-17 winners. Man of the match was year 11 number 8 Fin Williams, who marked his debut with some explosive carries through the middle and a great solo try.

We then followed this up with the county cup at Forest, with a strong team bolstered with some very strong year 11 players that our team has had a great rivalry with over the years. The game finished 45-5 to Forest but the boys fought to the end and had a close second half, men of the match were Ethan Sheard and Callum Rosier and a mention for year 11s Ali Jardine and Charlie Shakespeare who played well . Our national cup run came to an end at Windsor Boys with a 41-17 defeat, man of the match was Harry Greenwood who, while a fullback by trade, performed very well at fly half as the season went on.

The league season however, brought some much deserved victories, with a 22-0 win against Park House and an excellent 28-21 victory against the Downs, which was decided by our try of the year which was an excellent team try at the death. Men of the match were Jamie Miller and Sam Middleton. We then played our annual fixture at QMC Basingstoke, which despite leaving some scores out there, we won comfortably 26-7, and men of the match were Anthony Hennis, Joel Douglas and Tom Lamden.

To round the season off, we took this momentum into the crunch game against a strong ONA side just before Christmas. Thank you to Mr Hart for coaching the ONA team and Mr Codling for refereeing superbly. It was a real back and forth match with both teams holding the lead at various points, but the ONA eventually pulled away in the final 10 minutes to win 27-17. Man of the match was captain Toby Gale, who put in some huge hits in this game and led the team superbly throughout the season. Also a special mention for Adam Greenwood, who scored his first try for the school. After the game, we held the annual awards ceremony, with Harry Greenwood and Jamie Miller sharing a closely fought player’s player vote, Ethan Sheard winning coaches player and Ben Murrell won the much deserved clubman of the year.

Year 11 rugby

Congratulations go to the year 11 rugby team on yet another successful season. They won all their games against local schools in the year 11 evening league and a number of players have also performed really well for the senior team as well. We are really looking forward to these lads making up the core of what we hope to be a very successful senior side next year! Also congratulations go to Ali Jardine, Johann Mascarenhas, Charlie Shakespeare, Fin Williams and Ben Newman who all represented Berkshire this year.

Overall, this was a great season and I’d like to thank all the boys for their commitment and effort for the green and white. We are really looking forward to next season (whenever this may be!) with a strong cohort entering year 12, many of whom already played this year, we hope to build further on this year’s success!

St Bart’s B team lost 6-0 with The Downs awarding players of the match to Lyra Baily and Holly Conway.

St Bart’s A team had another home fixture, but this time they faced Little Heath. After their win from their first fixture, the girls were determined to claim another one. St Gabriel’s were our next opponents for both the A and the B team. We knew that our rivals would be our toughest game, but nonetheless all of the girls were determined. All teams started strong and fast. For the St Bart’s A team match, St Gabriel’s took an early lead, but we continued to fight. At the end of the season St Bart’s A team finished first in their league having won 8 out of 9 games and the B team finished second in their league after losing just one game. Amazing achievements for both teams.

As a result of winning their league, the A team represented West Berkshire in the Berkshire School Games Netball Tournament. They faced some tough competition however the girls played amazingly. Year 10 Netball Congratulations to the year 10 netball squad on an excellent season.

Sadly, lockdown interrupted play and the squad missed out on their Area Netball Tournament as well as the last couple of matches in their league. However, the matches played reflect a talented and skilful team.

In their first league game against Kennet a win of 17 – 7 was a great way to start. Player of the match was Georgia Humphreys. Against St Gabriels the team managed another convincing victory winning 24 – 5 with Zahra Kateregga and Polly Hassel Collins being awarded players of the match.

The Downs school proved a little challenging and despite valiant efforts the team lost 6 – 26 with Polly Hassel Collins being awarded player of the match. The last 2 fixtures to be played were against Little Heath where St Barts won 20 – 10 again Polly Hassel Collins being awarded player of the match and against Trinity where the squad notched up another victory winning 22-15 and Lottie Codling being awarded player of the match.

Well done to all squad members on some excellent results.

Squad Georgia Humphreys, Polly Hassle Collins, Lucy Colston, Zahra Kateregga, Eva Dijksman, Annabel Grant, Sophie Lawrence, Lottie Codling, Chloe Goddard.

Player of the season is awarded to Polly Hassel Collins

Mrs Leach Year 11 Netball The year 11 Netball squad had made an excellent start to their season as the results below reflect. Sadly lockdown halted play part way through the season and the squad missed out on the final games in their league and their Area Tournament which was a great pity as there certainly was a friendly challenge on between St Barts and Kennet to see who might be Area winners!

A first closely contested league game against Kennet saw a final score of 11 – 13 to Kennet with Bianca Vicaria being named player of the match.

Against St Gabriels the squad took a convincing win of 25 – 11 with Maddy Ettridge and Luci Roberstson being named as players. The first of 2 fixtures against Park House saw St Barts win 30 – 14 with Imogen Pemberton and Bianca Vicaria being awarded players of the match. In the 2nd fixture against Park House the squad continued to shine and won 22 – 9 , players of this match awarded to Maddy Ettridge and Luci Roberston.

The final game to be played was against The Downs and was a closely fought game with St Barts the eventual winners winning 17 – 15 with Maddy Ettridge and Bianca Vicaria being awarded players.

Squad Bianca Vicaria, Maddy Ettridge, Luci Robertson, Imogen Pemberton, Maisey Lainsbury, Lottie Day, Neve Scarr

Congratulations to all squad players – a highly talented and skilful squad who I am sure will continue to go from strength to strength as they continue their netball next year.

Senior Netball Congratulations to the Senior netball players who have had a superb season. A strong squad of talented netballers who have performed with great skill in their league matches and Area Tournament.

Against Theale Green the team secured another victory winning 14 – 9 Lola Callaghan being awarded player of the match. Our game against St Gabriel's was a tough but excellent game with both teams contesting to be the winners – the final score was 20 – 26 to St Gabriel's with player of the match Sophie Stancombe. Against Park House the team won 21 – 3 and Eva Maslin was awarded player. Our rematch against Kennet once again saw the team win 17 – 9 player of the match being awarded to Sophie Stancombe. A final game against Theale the team managed another victory of 17 – 2 with Keyleigh Clements being awarded player.

In the Area Netball Tournament the team continued to lay their best netball and were runners up which is a superb achievement.

Year 7 Football – League contenders, area tournament winners and south 5-a-side finalists

Year 7 A and B Squad who represented the school against Park House and the Downs. The numbers in attendance at Year 7 football training were very similar to the rugby, with in excess of fifty boys attending practice regularly. The season started with tough A team match against a very strong Piggot school team, Piggot winning 4-1. Player of the match was Joe Coley.

Next came an enjoyable afternoon at with the A and B teams playing alongside each other. The A team beat Park House A 2-1, followed by Downs A 2-0. The B team played on longer match against Park House B, and won 4-0. Players of the matches were Freddie Wright and Jez Davey.

The A and B teams hosted Kennet A and B at Enborne Road, with a 1-1 draw against a very strong Kennet side for the A team, and a 2-1 win for the B team. Players of the matches were Jimmy Shakespeare and Rhys Kemp.

Twenty one boys played for the Football C team versus John O'Gaunt's A team. The final score 0-2 did not reflect an impressive St Bart's whole squad performance that involved many player rotations. Players of the match were Thomas Bennett, Lennon Barton, Ashton Milner and Nathan Taylor.

Year 7 C Team Squad. Alfie Lewis, Ben Telford, Arpit Bhabrha, Ibrahim Diallo, Lennon Barton, Azad Findik, Silas Whitehead, George Berry, Charlie Rosser, Samson Tu, Marcus Ingoe,

Nathan Taylor, Ashton Milner, Max Gower, Jacob Glendenning, Amogh Kassety ,Ethan Curtis, Gabriel Hood, Thomas Bennet, Sam Telford, Jensen Weatherhead.

The A team’s chances of winning the league came down to the match against Trinity, but Trinity were an excellent side who had enjoyed a great cup run, and they proved too strong. Final score Trinity 5 St Bart’s 1. Following the final whistle, the boys then played a friendly involving twenty one A and B team players, with a closer final score line of Trinity 2 – St Bart’s 1. Goals were scored by Freddie Wright and Joe Coley. Player of the match was defender Dylan Bacchus.

The area 6-a-side tournament was a full squad effort. Kai Rees, Sam Mildenhall, Joe Coley, Jimmy Shakespeare, George Bucket, Rares Simion, Harry Billet and James Fenner went on to represent Newbury Schools in the South of England 5-a-side football tournament in Eastleigh. Well done to all boys who played in this prestigious tournament. Goals were scored by Sam Mildenhall, Rares Simion, Harry Billet and Joe Coley.

Year 8 Football National cup: The national cup journey began at Larkmead School in Abingdon. All players performed superbly securing St Bart’s place in the next round with a 6-1 victory. Man of the match awards went to Freddie Stewart © who was outstanding, completing multiple last ditch tackles to prevent Larkmead from adding to their score line. Daniel Gonzalez-Birchall was also named joint MOM, creating multiple goal scoring opportunities, and scoring a hat-trick himself.

The 2nd round was upon us, and we had drawn a home fixture in which would be played against Wheatley Park who had travelled over an hour to get to the fortress that is St Bart’s. The boys played some unbelievable football controlling the game throughout. Despite not being clinical in front of the goal, we managed to get over the line with a 6-2 win. As always, a great team performance which made it hard to select a man of the match. George Alston deserves a mention for his hat-trick, showing great composure in front of goal on a fast surface. Daniel Gonzalez was superb again creating numerous amounts of opportunities, and Liam Clinton for a fantastic turn on the edge of the box and powering the ball into the bottom corner. However, joint man of the match awards go to Flynn Fox-Jones and James Hewetson who were again excellent at the back. Another victory for the very talented St Bart’s Squad in the 3rd round of the national cup. A 3-2 win vs Wellington School. It was now evident that the games were getting more challenging each round. Both teams struggled to keep possession and get the ball under control on a fast surface. St Bart’s took the lead three times in the game, with Wellington not giving up easily, returning with a goal after both of the St Bart’s goals. However, with three minutes to go Oscar Kirby had a shot on the edge of the box which was deflected and found its way into the bottom corner of the Wellington goal. Again, another great team performance. MOM was awarded to Oscar Kirby for controlling the midfield throughout the match, and scoring the winning goal to progress St Bart’s into the 4th round.

The St Bart’s squad was full of confidence going into the 4th round of the national cup. We had been drawn against last year’s finalists St Peter’s high, who were strong favourites for this year’s competition. A very competitive game throughout with both teams displaying some excellent football, which was truly impressive from Year 8 teams. Unfortunately, we were unable to secure the win and progress into the 5th round of the national cup. Nevertheless, all players involved should be immensely proud of their achievements this year, and we can now primarily focus on the county cup. MOM was the captain Freddie Stewart, who made some fantastic tackles throughout preventing goal scoring opportunities, and showing great leadership encouraging all players to give 100% until the final whistle.

National Cup Squad: Flynn Fox- Jones, Liam Clinton, Oscar Kirby, Toby Smith, Noah Lendor, Jacob Woods, Freddie Stewart ©, Jack Robbins, George Alston, Spencer Codling, Sam Harrison, Callum Donald, Daniel Gonzalez- Birchall, James Hewetson and Dan Cornall.

County Cup: The Year 8 squad carried their success on in the county cup, winning 5-3 in the first round against LVS. Brilliant first half performance coming in 4-0 up at the break. LVS starting strong in the second half scoring three goals within the first 15 minutes. Despite the shaky start to the second half, St Bart’s managed to hold on and grab a late goal to secure their place in the next round. MOM was Jimmy Herman for scoring two goals, and for his hold up play against two strong central defenders.

The 2nd round of the county cup included facing a strong and promising Sandhurst team, who also had similar success in the national cup. St Bart’s were successful again winning the fixture 8-4 and therefore, securing our place in the next round of the cup. MOM was Daniel Gonzalez who had an outstanding game scoring 4, and assisting the other 4 goals.

County Cup Squad: From left to right; Standing- Spencer Codling, George Alston, Jack Robbins, Freddie Stewart ©, Jimmy Herdman, Liam Clinton, Oskar Kirby, Toby Smith, Charlie Cooper, Sam Harrison, Jacob Woods, Callum Donald, Daniel Gonzalez- Birchall, Noah Lendor, James Hewetson and Flynn Fox-Jones.

League football: Year 8 A team: The A team continued their unbeaten run winning their first league fixture 8-1 against Parkhouse. Great team and individual performances. MOM was the captain Freddie Stewart with a great performance defensively, and great forward passes into the midfield which started various attacks.

The next league fixture was away at Kennet, which was renowned as a competitive fixture which could go either way. However, with another great performance, St Bart’s was able to continue the unbeaten run and build confidence for both the national and county cup fixtures. MOM was Callum Donald for having immense quality in the final third, getting three assists.

Year 8 B team: The B team had their first fixture of the season also against Parkhouse, suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat. St Bart’s displayed some promising football despite it being the first time that all players had played together, which shown great signs for the rest of the season. MOM was awarded to Will Spain for a great performance between the sticks, which isn’t Wills normal position.

The B team had the opportunity to put what we had been working on in training into a competitive situation against local rivals Kennet. St Bart’s played some great football and showed great desire as they found themselves 2-0 down within 10 minutes. The newly formed squad managed to get 2 goals back to level the score, but couldn’t hold out the Kennet forwards as they managed to secure a 3-2 win within in the final minutes of the game. MOM’s were Will Spain for another great performance in goal, and Lewis Gardner for controlling the midfield and encouraging his team mates throughout.

Year 8 6 aside tournament @ Trinity School: The A team was successful in winning their pool by drawing two and winning three of their fixtures. B team came runners up also, drawing two and winning three of their matches. Players of the Tournament were Jimmy Herman (A team) and Callum Donald (Captain of the B team).

Player of the season: Freddie Stewart

Year 9 Football Despite being cut short, a successful season in which many students got the chance to represent the school. From a teacher’s point of view, my highlight has to be the 1-0 win away at Forest School. We snatched a winner against a very strong team and it showed what potential the team have when they play at their best! Fingers crossed we will get a chance to build on this next year.

Marcus Bucknell has lead the team brilliantly again this year and has written a short piece summing up the season from his captaining perspective.

“We have had some excellent results this season, like the 1-0 win in the cup against a strong Forest side on a very sticky pitch and the win at the 6-a-side tournament against some high quality teams which was my favourite moment of this year! I feel that this season we have finally learned to play as a team rather than a group of talented individuals - this has helped us massively in the tougher games. Although, we have had some consistent stand-out performers like Lewis Mortimer, Sedem Hamenya and all three of our brilliant goalkeepers! All in all, it has been a great year and I’d like to thank all of the players and our coach. I am looking forward to next season where I’m sure we can improve even further!” Marcus Bucknell – Year 9 Football captain

All three keepers have been excellent as Marcus has mentioned and it is a real privilege to have such high standards in that department. But overall the player of the year has to go to someone who has consistently performed in central midfield, calm and composed on the ball and has started communicating effectively to those around him to help his team mates out.

Player of the season: Lewis Mortimer Runner-up: Jake Cooper Mr Harmer

Year 10 Football A frustrating season result wise for the boys but a huge squad of players was often used and therefore consistently playing well together was difficult. Many students have had the opportunity to get involved in B team games and therefore gain valuable experience playing competitive football. The season was cut short and therefore we were unable to finish our league season and play all our fixtures. Plenty to work on for next year though and a great group of boys to work with. Well done to all involved.

RESULTS:

16.01.2020 Holyport (County Cup) L 2-1 Alec 04.02.2020 Park House A W 2-0 Sam and George 04.02.2020 Park House B D 0-0 26.02.2020 Kennet A L 6-0 Finley 26.02.2020 Kennet B L 7-0 Will and Charlie

In terms of individual performances, George Greenwood had one of his best years in goal and continues to develop his goalkeeping ability. Alec Willoughby showed glimpses of his quality and footwork and scored an excellent goal in the county cup defeat. Sam Robinson also had an excellent season and is one of the most improved players in the team, playing excellently at left back in a defensive role but also with the ball at his feet, linking up with the left winger in front of him. The standout performer though is one that is missed the most when he is unavailable and brings an excellent level of solidarity at the back, whereby others play much better around him and under his leadership. He will also drive with the ball bringing it out of defence and get the team up the field on the quick counter. He has also stepped up this year, along with Finley Allen, in playing for the year above without looking out of place at all.

Player of the season: Shyam Taank Runner-up: Sam Robinson. Mr Harmer

Year 11 Football Year 11 built on their Year 10 county cup final runner up medal with a good run in the National and County Cups, and they were unbeaten in the league.

National cup: The boys started with a strong run of form, beating Wellington Academy 1-0. Great team performance and the lads played some lovely football and kept possession of the ball really well alongside, being very clinical in front of goal. Some stand out performances from Mark Chidi, Dan Power, Aiden Kriel and Reuben Wilkinson. However, man of the match was awarded Reuben Wilkinson for making a numerous amount of fantastic saves and keeping St Bart’s in the game during the first half.

Left to right – back row: Joel Douglas, Shyam Taank (Yr 10), Matt Bailey, Mark Chidi, Will Oxley, Aiden Kriel, Joe Mitchell, Dan Power, Charlie Shakespeare; front row: Joel Chhetri Toby Stancombe, Jensen Knight, Alex Groves-way , Alfie Letman.

The unbeaten St Bart’s squad travelled to St Alfred’s in Wantage. It was now evident that the games were becoming more challenging as we progressed through the competition. However, with another great team performance the lads secured 2-0 win. The boys played some excellent football again dominating possession throughout the game. Despite, being rash in front of goal in the first half, Dan Power and Aiden Kriel were clinical in the second half scoring with our only two chances of the half. MOM was awarded to Finlay Allen (Yr10), who was superb at full back, Mr Fry was very impressed with how Finlay made the step up and looked fully in control at all times.

Another cup win came against Little Heath 1-0. St Bart’s played some lovely free flowing football grabbing the 3rd round national cup tie by the scruff of the neck. Again, the forwards lacked being clinical in front of goal and despite having multiple amount chances the lads couldn’t get that first goal to ease the pressure. However, Joe Mitchell managed to open the scoring and secure St Bart’s place in the 4th round. MOM was awarded to Joe Mitchell.

St Bart’s then hosted a very strong Glenmoor and Winton Academy team from Bournemouth, unfortunately going out of the National Cup losing the tie 4-0. The boys lacked quality and nerves begun to show within the opening minutes. The visitors were clinical and took their chances. All players gave 100% and continued to fight all the way to the final whistle. This is a very talented squad who will look to develop and progress as a team in preparation for the county cup after the Christmas break. MOM was awarded to Joel Douglas for his grit and determination to win the ball back for his team mates. This is great achievement and all year 11 players involved should be proud.

Squad: Shyam Taank, Aiden Kriel , Reuen Wilkinson, Mark Chidi, Dan Power, Matt Bailey, Will Oxley; front row: Alfie Letman, Joel Chhetri , Toby Stancombe, Charlie Shakespeare, Alex Groves-way. County Cup: Notwithstanding the earlier success in the national cup, it was an unexpected early departure for the Year 11 squad in the county cup with a 2-0 loss to Waingels. Waingels started the stronger team and took an early lead. This sparked a positive reaction from St Bart’s, but again we lacked that creativity in the final third, resulting in producing minimal goal scoring opportunities. As always, the work rate from all was superb. Joint MOM’s were Mark Chidi and Matt Bailey who have been outstanding on and off the pitch throughout the season.

After Christmas the boys played several league matches. They started with two 0-0 draws against Mary Hare and John O’Gaunt – players of these matches were Charlie Shakespeare and Alfie Letman. They then went on to beat Trinity 1-0, and draw 1-1 with local rivals Park House, with goals scored by Will Oxley and Dan Power, and players of the matches going to Charlie Shakespeare and Cameron Dunbar. They didn’t know it then, but that was to be their last Year 11 sports fixture – hopefully the double rainbow witnessed that day is a positive sign of things to come when the boys come back and represent the Sixth Form.

Senior Football – 1st and 2nd XI In what was turning out to be a very enjoyable season, it was sadly affected not only by the poor weather but then cut short completely by lockdown. Throughout the season we had consistently excellent numbers at training, able to play 11v11 games and prepare properly. We’d like to thank all the players commitment throughout the season.

Squad: Will Seddon, Felix Robinson, Oli Paul, Tom Lamden, Eden Camplin, Harry Brooker, Marc Child, Anthony Hennis, Will Freer, Josh Young, Harry Greenwood, Dan Beck, Dan Morgan, Alfie Bullock, Joe Cowley, Sam White, Kris Reddin, Tom Pennington, Jake Bone, Vanya Knyazev, Toby Quinn, Sam Middleton, Antonio Framalicco, Tom Moores.

The second team performed admirably in division 2, despite playing lots of other schools first teams. Thanks to Joe Cowley, who led the team well throughout the season. The boys came very close in their first game away at Waingels, the game was poised at 1-1 and we were by the far the better side throughout, but unfortunately a goal against the run of play cost us the game. Man of the match was Jake Bone on debut for the school and the goal was scored by Alfie Letman. We then followed that up with tough games against Theale Green (lost 5-1), Reading Boys (Lost 8-2) and Edgebarrow (lost 3-0). Men of the matches were Kris Reddin, Harry greenwood, Tom Moores, Callum Meechan and Josh Young. Also, thank you to Matt Bailey, Alex Groves-Way and Mark Chidi who also stepped up from year 11 for both teams and played superbly.

The first team started the season with a tough 3-0 loss against Maiden Erleigh before Christmas in the national cup, man of the match was Will Freer. We kicked off the main season with the 6 a side tournament, with our teams coming 2nd and 4th. Men of the tournament were Will again and Callum Rosier. The league season proper started with a 2-1 closely fought loss against Kennet with Felix Robinson man of the match. The team then had by far their best performance of the season against Langley in the Berks/Bucks/Oxon cup, winning 6-0, man of the match was Josh Douglas. Unfortunately, we never got the chance to go further in the cup as this turned out to be the last game of the season.

Girls’ Football This season our U13 girls football team had a good run in the English Schools cup.

They beat Portchester at home 7-2 with Lola and Mya being awarded players of the match. They then played Testwood at home winning 7-3 and Chloe was awarded player of the match. They were then knocked out at home by a strong team called Parkstone 5-0 and Lola was awarded player of the match. After Christmas the U13 girls team played in the Berkshire county cup. Unfortunately we were drawn away to a very strong Denefield team and we lost 5- 0 so went out in the first round, Lola was awarded player of the match.

We entered teams into the local girl’s football 6-asside area tournaments. Year 8 finished 3rd and Year 9 were overall runners up. Year 7 managed to win their tournament and went represent West Berkshire in the regional finals in Southampton were they got to the semi-finals.

Congratulations to the four girls who gained county representative honours this season – Mya Cahoon and Lyra Baily (Year 7), Bella Cox and Abi Hobbs (Year 9).

Players of the season: Year 7: Scarlett John and Mya Cahoon Year 8: Betsy Carroll Cross Country Congratulations to all students who took part in the Area and County Cross Country Competition this year – through excellent teamwork and support for each other you achieved some superb results and did St Bart’s proud!

Helena Van Blerk and Holly Conway, Jacob Avery, Jack Strutt, James Fenner and Elliot Robbins Badminton Girls badminton - Ks3 and Ks4 badminton have made good progress this year. With low numbers to select from the competition for places has been between being selected for the A or B teams.

In the district competitions both teams played well, won some games and took the opposition close. The Ks3 and Ks4 girls finished 5th overall.

With standout performances from Ruby Whiltshire (year 9) and Emily Tucker and Annabel Grant (year 10).

Going into next season all teams need a little more commitment to training week in, week out.

Boys badminton There is great completion for places in the Ks4 boys teams.

The A team, dominated by the year 11’s, was led by by Calum and Duncan, with James and Aston all Playing Some of their best.

The year 10 boys had to fight for places, with Sam Cheney, Patrick Middleton, Matty Fowler and Salman Jaan, winning the right to take the 4 places.

In the district competition the Year 10 team soon realised how good they need to be to win, losing all of their matches and having to play the eventual winners. Sam was outstanding winning all but 2 of his games.

The Year 11 boys were destined for a matchup against Kennet A in the final. And what a final. At 2 games all the winners (and county qualifiers) would be decided in Final match. With Callum and James playing an outstanding game, the boys were Match point down, then turned it around for their own match point, but heart break as Kennet A took 3 points in a row and the win. In any other year the boys would quality for the County event, but changes by Badminton England meant only 1 Team went through

Outstanding performances by: Callum Somerville, Duncan Somerville, James MacAllan and Aston Douglass.

At Ks3 the competition for places is at its highest. Over a dozen boys tried out for 8 players. With Year 8’s Lewis Hill, Dan Begg, Shubham and Arthor Cheney deservedly lead the school A team.

At the district Competition the B team were excellent. With only one loss the boys qualifies for the 3rd place play off and destroyed their opposition and in doing so the team claimed 3rd place.

The A team easily won their way to the 1st place play off. Their opposition (with 2 county players as their opposition). Like the Ks4 boys this was a thriller. The lead was exchanged all the way through. Tilehurst got match point, but then 3 straight points (and a slice of a luck in a miss hit) gave the game to St Bart's. And so on to the Country completion. With 3 months of extra training (and help in training by Zac Begg) the boys were well prepared. Following an early start, a drive to Aborfield and time to warm up the boys then saw the challenge they were up against. County and England Players.

The class of the opposition soon shone through. In the very first singles runner St Bart's took the first point, and then The England number 3 took the next 21.

This quality did not put the team off. With the eventual winners out of the way (0-5 loss) the team won the next two matches, with excellent performance from all the boys, and so qualified for the semi-finals.

The boys tried hard and fought for every point, but it was a step to high. 3rd place was their reward.

The team has been brilliant and as they are all year 8 they have the Experience and the chance to improve next year.

Outstanding performance:

Lewis Hill, Danial Begg, Shubham Tripathi, Arthur CHeney (with special thanks to Zac Begg for his commitment to helping the team in training)

Mr Axten Fives Fives at St Bart’s (on its three almost-new courts) continued apace this year with students learning and playing the game after school on Fridays (and via the Y10 and Y12 options) with a qualified coach from the Eton Fives Association. Students also play fives with the Newbury Fives Club on Thursdays and Sundays at which several old Newburians also play. Several students have begun fives as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award programme. The photo is from the EFA website and features Dan, Tom, Rowan and Scott.

The highlights of the competitive calendar began with October’s Under 25’s national competition with Emily and Abbie (Y10) starring as some of the youngest players to ever enter this competition and Sasha (Y13) picking up the bronze medal in the women’s cup; an event covered in the Newbury Weekly News. In November the Eton Fives Association Trophy qualifiers were held at with the Newbury Fives club entering both a senior and a junior team, the latter containing several St Bart’s students and outscoring their senior counterparts. St Bart’s also performed admirably in the Turnbull Trophy – Dan (Y10 and last year’s St Bart’s player of the year), Tom (Y10), Scott (Y10) and Rowan (Y9) and their respective adult partners (the St Bart’s coach and 3 Old Newburians) were up against some of the country’s top Fives playing schools (such as Ipswich and Highgate School) and performed tenaciously in the plate competitions with Dan and Marc (St Bart’s coach) just losing out on a slot in a plate final. Finally, not long before lockdown, St Bart’s joined forces with Newbury Fives Club to face up against the mighty Shrewsbury School at a home fixture at St Bart’s. This time added to this hybrid team’s ranks were the very promising James (Y8) and new player Charlotte (Y10) who both performed brilliantly against much more experienced pairs.

Students who want to try the game are encouraged to just turn up at the courts on Fridays at 3pm (whenever this can be safely re-started in the new academic year). Adults who wish to try the game can contact Will Thomas (Thames Valley Regional Organiser for Eton Fives) on [email protected] or just turn up on Thursdays (7pm) and Sundays (11am) once the courts have re-opened – kit (gloves) and coaching all free of charge.
