CONCERT PROGRAM Ears Wide Open Haydn’s Drumroll Symphony

Tuesday 12 July at 6:30pm Melbourne Recital Centre

ARTISTS JOSEPH HAYDN (1732–1809) Symphony No.103 in E flat, Hob.I:103, Drumroll Joseph Haydn composed his final 12 symphonies for performances in Melbourne London during two journeys; one in 1791–1792 and another in 1794-1795. The penultimate symphony is a marvel of the so-called classical style that Haydn helped to develop. The work is written for the standard classical Symphony orchestra with 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani and strings. The first movement is preceded by a slow and sombre introduction with the Orchestra drumroll that gave the Symphony its name. A very unusual feature of this movement is the repeat of this introduction just before the coda. Two years after the Drumroll Symphony was composed, Beethoven would give his audience a similar surprise in the first movement of the Sonata Pathétique. Richard Gill The slow movement is – typical of Haydn – a set of variations on two themes: one in C minor and one in C major. This is followed by the Minuet. Surprisingly, the Finale starts not with the main theme, but with 2 horns playing the accompaniment to the main theme, which is supposedly based conductor on a Croatian folk song. Haydn’s Drumroll Symphony was immediately popular with the English REPERTOIRE audience. After the premiere the Morning Chronicle wrote: ‘Another new Overture [i.e., symphony], by the fertile and enchanting Haydn, was performed; which, as usual, had continual strokes of genius, both in air and harmony. The Introduction excited deepest attention, the Allegro charmed, Haydn the Andante was encored, the Minuets, especially the trio, were playful and sweet, and the last movement was equal, if not superior to the preceding.’ Symphony © Ronald Vermeulen 2016 RICHARD GILL No.103 CONDUCTOR Richard Gill, OAM, is one of Australia’s preeminent conductors and an internationally respected music educator.
