CONCERT PROGRAM Ears Wide Open Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin

Tuesday 10 May at 6:30pm Recital Centre

ARTISTS Our first Ears Wide Open concert for the year concentrated on Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite. Today, we will take a closer look at another suite, which was written in the 20th century: Le tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel. Melbourne The word ‘Tombeau’ in the title refers to a 17th century French tradition of writing compositions as a memorial for other composers. The composer Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin ‘Le Grand’, who Symphony lived from 1668 to 1733. A master of baroque keyboard music, Couperin published a famous book on keyboard technique, L’art de toucher le clavecin (‘The Art of Harpsichord Playing’) in 1716. Ravel composed his ‘Tombeau’ as a suite for piano between 1914 and 1917 Orchestra and produced an orchestral version of the work – minus two movements – in 1919. All movements are dedicated to friends of the composer who had died in the First World War. The orchestral version consists of four movements: Prélude, Forlane, Menuet and Rigaudon. It was never Ravel’s intention to strictly write a work ‘in the style of’. Instead, Le tombeau de Couperin is a playful evocation of the atmosphere of a bygone era, in which dance rhythms, melodic forms and conductor cadences from the Baroque period enter in a dialogue with contemporary musical elements.
