Adventures of very enthusiastic Sprite Owners A short report from Graham & Pauline Hepburn Travelling to Wodonga for the Challenge 2018

STILL TRAVELLING SOUTH

Pauline and Graham Hepburn carefully prepared Bugeye, tow vehicle and itinerary to travel south from to Wodonga for the Sprite National Challenge. This would be our fifth long trip with the Sprite, so with such experience what could go wrong? Thursday 19th April 2018 the Sprite was on trailer, car fridge stocked with food and drinks, and luggage loaded for an early departure Friday. Graham tidied the yard and pulled down a palm frond threatening his orchids. The frond let go and Graham came down hard on the concrete, tweaking his wrist. The family came for a farewell dinner as we would be away for a month. All inspected the swollen wrist, which would surely go down soon.

We left early Friday, destination Charters Towers. Graham drove first, and managed by steering with his left hand, with Pauline relieving for a couple of stretches. We met up at the motel with Bob and Patty Ingram, towing their Bugeye from Cairns to the Nationals, and Wayne and Lyn Morgan, who were returning to Cairns from the Big Healy Nationals at Bathurst. We all dined at the motel and retired early. Next morning Graham' wrist had swollen alarmingly, so we went very early to the Charters Towers Hospital. Graham was booked in by a cheerful and efficient Sister, and awaited the arrival of the doctor. He in turn called in a radiographer who remarked that this was a particularly bad fracture.

Graham was told that a back cast would now be applied, it would need to be replaced in 5 days, and surgery would be required within 2 weeks. Not a great second day of a one month driving holiday! As the Sprite was now redundant for the Snowy Mountains Rally after the Nationals we spent the morning looking for somewhere to park the trailer and Sprite. Wayne and Lyn, half way back to Cairns rang and offered to come back later and tow the Sprite to Cairns. That settled we headed south again. Next night at Springsure Graham rang a mate at Tamworth and asked him to find an orthopedist in Wagga who could sort the fracture. On to Goondawindi next night, still in loose company with Bob, Patty and their Bugeye.

Next day we diverted to Tamworth. Pauline had just now taken over all the driving as the one armed driver was not doing so well in traffic. Just as well, as we entered Tamworth the R.B.T check would probably not have approved Graham’s driving. Ian, a Pharmacist flat mate from Sydney Uni. days had some phone nos. for surgeons in Wagga. We found the Wagga on call surgeon for the week, and asked them if they would like to see the referral from Charters Towers Hospital. When Ian was asked to scan this, that was outside his ability level so we sent a picture of the referral off his phone. They called back for a copy of the X rays so the girls held them up to the sky on the back deck and he got some nice picks, with blue sky and light cloud in the background. Within the hour we were told to report to Wagga Base Hospital Casualty on Wednesday to see Asst. Prof. Feilding. We met up that night, Monday, at Gunnnedah with the Qld. Sprite people, and Bob and Patty again.

Tuesday morning, after a pleasant night with the group at a club for dinner, we headed to Bathurst where we were all booked in for the night. Bob Gray, a Sprite mate from Maleny offered to take Graham for a lap of Mt. Panorama, a bucketlist goal, and much appreciated.

Page 12 of 30 30th January 2019 SPRITE ON

The casualty Dept. At Wagga base was full up next morning, Anzac Day. When reception asked whether Graham’s address was still Box 111 Gundagai he said that it was in 1971, but not now! During our 6 hour sojourn there X Rays and a scan were performed, and Graham booked for surgery on Friday. The phone transmitted X Rays had been good enough for the hardware for the op. to be ordered.

On Friday morning Pauline dropped Graham at the hospital, and went shopping until he could be picked up mid-afternoon now with a plate and screws locating the socket. Thus we finally arrived in Wodonga for the closing dinner, and the final day of the Rally, including a show and shine and a navigation run.

The D Max Ute then took us on our 4 day run around the Snowy, with Pauline driving, and Graham a passenger in Bob Ingram’s Sprite each afternoon. We enjoyed the company of other Sprite owners as we travelled through familiar territory, near our previous homes.

A week after the operation Graham returned to Wagga to a hand clinic, was fitted with a plastic splint and given a schedule of exercises. These numbered 14, each to be repeated 10 times, 5 times a day, for a total of 700 movements daily. Graham could now drive a bit, when not busy with his exercises. A further Physio. appointment was made for Camden in the next week.

We finished our month’s touring holiday, staying over at Tumbarumba, Tumut, Merimbula, Camden area, Inverell, Brisbane, Gladstone, Arlie Beach and . We covered about 8500km in total. Once back in Cairns, further physiotherapy has restored a lot of movement to Graham’s wrist, but golf would have to wait.

Unfortunately no photos of the trip are available, as our camera went missing in the post on its way back from NSW to Cairns, so I will include a pic of our Sprite, now coming up for the 48th year of Graham’s custody. The wrist now has full movement, the golf handicap is coming back down, and we look forward to the next adventure of a trip to the Warwick Sprite National Challenge in 2020.

Other members attended the Samford Museum Car Display. Australia Day at Samford Museum 26/1/2019

By Nev Mansfield Well, What a hell of a hot day. As usual, some of us went to the Bayside Restorers gathering at Ormiston. Rumor has it there were about 500 American cars and heaps of Holdens. From all accounts a very successful day. David Love took some very nice photos. On the Northside, some of us went to the celebrations at Samford Museum with Alex, Rod and Nev from The Sprite Car Club, Rob, Nev and Glen from the BVAC and Sur & Greg Dunstan with 2 Rolls Royces from the Rolls Royce Club. Nicky and Lian turned up a little later with Bill Hurman in his beautiful veteran 1918 Dodge. After putting our tent up we all went for a stroll. Rod and I headed for the Museum, Alex headed for the water, coffee and damper. Rod took a heap of photos. The Museum at Samford is a credit to Geoff Harris and his volunteers and worth a look on one of our Sprite Club day runs. Walking out of the old Classroom, the teacher told me if I didn’t sit down and listen what she was trying to teach, I would get the strap – I was out the door before Rod.  After having a good look around and munching a few sausages and onion in 2 hours, there was so much history to take in. Such as the Camp Mountain Rail Accident 1947. Still the biggest rail accident in Qld Rail History. Finally getting back to the tents, Rod Laing (in a 3.8 Jag) and Damien Kahill (in a 1928 Dodge) were waiting for us. We all sat around till about 1.30 talking Cars and listening to traditional Aussie Music. Just a great day was had by us all.

Samford Australia Day Event - Samford Museum

By Rod Hibberd

The day was looking good as I set out for Samford Museum on Australia Day with the outlook suggesting a hot day (again). I publicised the event to the club as an alternative to the usual events, and a few people from both cars clubs I am involved with indicated they would likely attend.

The car show is part of an open day at Samford Museum which celebrates the district's history. It is an excellent Museum - well run with a variety of displays of the various district activities mostly in different buildings.

The car show started around 9am - I arrived bright and early in my 1927 Chev for this event (sorry - not the Midget this year).

What a great idea - no cost to enter and they actually provided chits for morning tea and a sausage sizzle for lunch. Soon enough I was parked up and next thing Nev was there in the Bugeye with hardtop.

Page 16 of 30 30th January 2019 SPRITE ON

Alex Robertson was already parked having arrived very early in Kermit and was checking out the Museum - but decided to move Kermit to park with the rest of us.

We all parked in a group of both Sprite Car Club and Brisbane Vintage Auto Club members. We all set up the dome marquee and things were ready to roll.

Soon enough more cars were rolling in - there was a great range of cars from across all eras - veteran, vintage, post vintage and classics. Old mate with the Dakota Truck was there with the music going - what an amazing machine! We got to park with some auspicious company - 2 Rolls Royces.

With our team parked it was time to head off and check out the other cars, and take a wander through the museum. The school, dairy, butter room, Military display, farm machinery, workshop, hobbies, toys of the eras were all interesting - you could spend a long time here. Then it was time to pick up the free morning tea which went down very well.

Of the cars on show many were cars that you just don't see at the regular bigger car shows. Check the pictures for a range of the most interesting ones. Sausage sizzle was next, as we were getting peckish, and it was back to the marquees to sit and have a chat.

By this time it was getting quite hot, and cars were starting to leave. With the cars thinning and crowds thinning as well, we decided to call it a day so it was time to dismantle the marquee and head off. The number of cars were down on 2018, as were the crowds - we spoke to the museum people and they were surprised, but put it down to the hot day, plus the fact that it was a normal working day for many people.

Unfortunately for me the short trip from Samford to Cashmere turned out to be a slow one with overheating issues. I thought it was just the hot day and uphill run, but on closer inspection when I got home I found the fan belt had started to disintegrate from the inside out. So I'll take the time to do a complete coolant system clean.

Thanks to Nev Mansfield (Bugeye), and Alex Robertson (Midget) for coming along. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the day. For anyone with an interest in local history the Museum is a great place to visit - take some time one day for a run out there.

Rod

Sunshine Coast Chapter Dinner Our dinner was held at the Burpengary Tavern. Just a great night. 21 of us turning up with Alex and Rod & Cheryl driving their Sprites – top effort you people. A very nice Pub with plenty of atmosphere, great raffle prizes, great service and very friendly staff. Subjects spoken about were w2hat we were doing for Australia Day, February Committee and Club meetings. Stuart Troy and I talked about motors. Alex decided to come over and listen in. Mark, Jeanette and Sephora came up from the Southside, oce again to do a deal for Eleah and it was very successful I am told. Then low and behold, the latest dance in America came on on the Pub TV and guess who knew how to do it – Sephora of course. So we all got dancing lessons for at least half an hour till she was puffed out. I heard later she stayed awake all the way home, much to the amazement of Mark & Jeanette. Definitely a great venue, and we will be back. Nev.

Next dinner will be on 12th February at Glasshouse Tavern 6.30pm

Gold Coast Chapter Dinner The next Gold Coast Dinner will be held at Arundel Tavern at Arundel Plaza, 226 Napper Road Arundel. 6.30pm Wednesday 20th February.

Concessional Registration Update TMR has now agreed to us having “Impromptu Events” here in Qld.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads is happy for Queensland incorporated car clubs to manage “impromptu events” on a case by case basis, as long as the event is added to the incorporated clubs newsletter, website or social media page.” They acknowledge it can be for “one or more” vehicles. (The full email is reproduced at the end of this Notice.)

It needs to be stressed again that Special Interest Vehicle Scheme -registered vehicles cannot be used for commuting to and from work, as a work vehicle, or for hire or reward. That would void their insurance if an accident occurs. There is increasing use of automatic number plate recognition in police cars, on overpasses etc., and it won’t be long before a press of one button will reveal the usage of a particular number plate. Frequent repeated use on one stretch of road will be detectable and in the event of a claim, insurers will look, as always, for any way to avoid liability. This is a great privilege – let’s not abuse it

The following email was sent from the Manager of Registration Policies at Transport Department to Doug Young from Qld Historic Motoring Council. I personally phoned the Dept of Transport this morning (Tuesday 18/12/18) and they confirmed this is information is correct. Your Committee will be meeting in early January and will discuss how this can work legally and effectively for our Club. More information will be in the next newsletter.

Good Morning Doug, Thank you for your email about Western Australia’s concessional registration scheme for historic vehicles. Apologies for the delay in responding. As you are aware, WA offers a registration concession to owners of Veteran, vintage, post vintage or invitational vehicles (referred to as a 404 concession). As part of the concession, WA places conditions to the vehicle license, which restricts the use of the vehicle and this restricted use is reflected in the reduced registration fees and motor vehicle injury insurance premium payable. The restricted use that applies in WA is comparable to the conditions and restrictions that apply in Queensland. As you have mentioned, the restricted vehicle use in WA includes impromptu events, which allows for vehicles participating in an impromptu event involving one or more vehicles may be acceptable provided the event is recorded in the clubs official run log. While the conditions and restrictions that apply in Queensland do not specially mention ‘impromptu event’, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is happy for Queensland incorporated car clubs to manage impromptu events on a case by case basis, as long as the event is added to the incorporated clubs newsletter, website or social media page. I trust this information is of assistance.

For Sale Anita’s MG Midget is FOR SALE

We’re not taking it back with us…. I’m sure most if not all of you know Anita’s MG Midget, she’s had it for over 15 years. It was delivered new to California in 1968, it was green at the time. It enjoyed the kind weather for many years, which is why it’s still in extraordinary condition today. The car was returned to the UK in 1996 and partially restored between then and 2000. At that time, we believe it was changed to the Tartan Red that it is today. In the time Anita bought it until today, we’ve driven it all around the UK, many parts of Europe plus of course Queensland and New South Wales. The car of course has been well maintained and is presented with fresh paintwork (courtesy of Austin Healey Restoration specialists J.H. Classics) after a little tin worm was cut out of the sills. The car is a 1968 1275cc MG Midget. Tartan Red with Old English White ‘Factory Option’ Hard Top and 5” Black Wire Wheels. Upgrades include 400lb std ride height front springs 33% uprated front dampers, 11/16” sway bar. MG Metro unleaded cylinder head, recently fitted (new) 5” wire wheels. Electronic SU fuel pump. This car has been loved and cherished whilst being used until recently as a daily car. It comes registered (KCY24) with a comprehensive history file and you drive it away for $20,000 (firm).
