Mustura Celata, a New Genus and Species of Loaches from Northern Myanmar, and an Overview of Physoschistura and Related Taxa (Teleostei: Nemacheilidae) 1 Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters/IEF-1080/pp. 1-26 Published 2 August 2018 LSID: http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:BEBD7270-0217-452F-B11B-99CA01744A3B DOI: http://doi.org/10.23788/IEF-1080 Mustura celata, a new genus and species of loaches from northern Myanmar, and an overview of Physoschistura and related taxa (Teleostei: Nemacheilidae) Maurice Kottelat* Mustura celata, new genus and species, is described from small tributaries of Lake Indawgyi, Myanmar. Mustura is distinguished from other genera of Nemacheilidae by having: the male pectoral fin slanted upwards, with branched ray 1 wider than following rays, branched once and branches close together, without membrane between them except near tip; wide, thickened unculiferous pad extending along anterior branched pectoral-fin rays, covered dorsally by small conical tubercles; two air bladder capsules connected by a manubrium and posterior chamber small and circular, or absent; lower lip with wide median interruption, two halves forming an acute angle, not in contact medially, wide and fleshy medially, forming a triangular ‘cushion’, partly free from jaw and connected to throat by a frenum; suborbital flap present, with small tubercles on posterior extremity. Most species earlier placed in Physoschistura in fact belong to Mustura. Physoschistura is diagnosed by having the two halves of the air bladder capsule joined medially (without manubrium) and the posterior chamber free, well developed and in direct contact with the capsule; it presently includes only P. brunneana (type species), P. pseudobrunneana, and possibly P. elongata, P. raoi and P. rivulicola. Mustura celata is distinguished from the other species of Mustura by, among others, the colour pattern (6-10 [usually 7] very irregular blotches or bars on flank, alternating with irregu- 1 lar saddles); 9 + 8 branched caudal-fin rays; 8 /2 branched dorsal-fin rays; lateral line complete; caudal peduncle depth 1.3-1.7 times in its length. Schistura shuensis, S. maepaiensis and S. bella belong to Mustura. Physoschistura absumbra belongs to Schistura s. l.; P. shuangjiangensis belongs to a distinct genus, apparently unnamed. Mustura, Pteronemacheilus, Physoschistura and Petruichthys seem to be closely related; they share features of the mouth morphology and unique features of the male pectoral fin and suborbital flap. Introduction where about 260 species have been described; most are described and figured in Kottelat (1984, Nemacheilid loaches typically occur in fast flow- 1990, 1998, 2000, 2001) and Freyhof & Serov (2001). ing water of small streams and less often in other Besides, new species are still regularly described habitats such as large rivers and caves. The fish is characterised by the absence of axillary pelvic lobe, 11-12.5 pectoral-fin rays, 9 pelvic-fin rays, 7 anal-fin rays, lateral line incomplete, reaching at the middle of predorsal-fin insertion, with 6-8 pores and 28- 33 scales, 2 black spots at upper and lower base margins of caudal-fin, 15-16 greyish dark black blotches along the lateral side of body, 15-17 dorsal saddle like bands which not extending to lateral line, and 5 dark bands on caudal-fin.

Pteronemacheilus lucidorsum, new spe- cies, is described from the Myitnge River drainage, Irrawaddy basin (Myanmar). E-mails: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract A new species of nemacheilid, Physoschistura dikrongensis, is described from the Brahmaputra basin in Arunachal Pradesh, India. It is easily distinguishable from congeners in having two V-shaped dark brown bars across the caudal fin towards the distal end; 11–15 irregular bars on the body; dark brown mottled markings on the head; 4 simple and 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays; 4 simple anal-fin rays; an incomplete lateral line; a forked caudal fin with 8+7 branched rays; a well-developed axillary pelvic lobe; suborbital flap in males, and nine preoperculo-mandibular sensory canal pores. Key words: Dikrong River, Doimukh, Brahmaputra basin, New nemacheilid Introduction Banarescu & Nalbant (in Singh et al. 1982) described the genus Physoschistura designating Nemacheilus brunneana Annandale (1918) from Yawnghwe Valley and Inle Lake, Myanmar, as its type species. Kottelat (1990, 2001) and Lokeshwor & Vishwanth (2012) diagnosed the genus in having a small body (less than 60 mm SL), strongly arched mouth, medially interrupted lower lip forming two lateral broadly triangular pads with deep furrows and irregularly shaped bars on the body. Chen et al. (2011) recognized seven species in the genus, which are distributed in the Brahmaputra, Irrawaddy, Salween and upper Mekong drainages, and described P.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The paper describes Physoschistura tigrinum, a new nemacheilid from the Chindwin basin in Manipur, India. The new species is distinguished from congeners in having 9½ branched dorsal-fin rays; 12–14 irregularly arranged light reddish brown bars on the side, some of which are broken into blotches and short bars; 5–6 dark brown saddles; forked caudal fin with 9+8 branched rays; axillary pelvic lobe well formed but not prominent; 10 pores in preoperculomandibular canal and suborbital flap in the male. The status of Schistura prashadi is also discussed, and the species is validated to Physoschistura. Key words: New nemacheilid, Changa River, northeastern India Introduction Fishes of the genus Physoschistura Bănărescu & Nalbant are small fishes inhabiting the hill streams of northeastern India to southeastern Asia through the southern Yunnan province of China. They are characterized by a deep body with small scales; eight or nine branched dorsal-fin rays; distal margin of the dorsal fin slightly convex; forked caudal fin; posterior chamber of air bladder well developed, not encapsulated, more or less conical, in direct contact with the capsule; strongly arched mouth, 1.5–2.0 times wider than long; and lower lip with a median interruption forming two lateral broadly triangular pads with deep furrows (Bănărescu & Nalbant 1995; Kottelat 1990).

E-mail: [email protected] 3Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The order Cypriniformes is the most diverse order of freshwater fishes. Recent phylogenetic studies have approached a consensus on the phylogenetic relationships of Cypriniformes and proposed a new phylogenetic classification of family- level groupings in Cypriniformes. The lack of a reference for the placement of genera amongst families has hampered the adoption of this phylogenetic classification more widely. We herein provide an updated compilation of the membership of genera to suprageneric taxa based on the latest phylogenetic classifications. We propose a new taxon: subfamily Esom- inae within Danionidae, for the genus Esomus. Key words: Cyprinidae, Cobitoidei, Cyprinoidei, carps, minnows Introduction The order Cypriniformes is the most diverse order of freshwater fishes, numbering over 4400 currently recognized species (Eschmeyer & Fong 2017), and the species are of great interest in biology, economy, and in culture. Occurring throughout North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, cypriniforms are dominant members of a range of freshwater habitats (Nelson 2006), and some have even adapted to extreme habitats such as caves and acidic peat swamps (Romero & Paulson 2001; Kottelat et al.
