  • Automotive and Autoparts Industries in Turkey
AUTOMOTIVE AND AUTOPARTS INDUSTRIES IN TURKEY Prepared by Sinan YÜZAL 2007 Export Promotion Center of Turkey AUTOMOTIVE AND AUTOPARTS INDUSTRIES IN TURKEY TURKEY’S VEHICLE INDUSTRY PRODUCTION Vehicle industry production in Turkey dates back to the mid1950s and the industry gained momentum in the early 1960s. After manufacturing some prototype vehicles during the 1950s, the first vehicle assembly company was established in 1954 (Turk Willys Overland Ltd.) for jeep manufacturing. By 1955 trucks and by 1963 buses were being assembled in Turkey. Then passenger car assembly companies, namely TOFAŞ (FIAT), OYAK (RENAULT) and OTOSAN (FORD) started operations in the following three years. In 1966 the industry also began to assemble its own cars (OTOSAN). The Turkishmade passenger car of those times “ANADOL” is nostalgia now. The two major producers of cars, TOFAŞ and OYAKRENAULT, under Italian and French licenses respectively, established their production lines in 1971. Recently Japanese and South Korean car manufacturers have established jointventures in Turkey. In 1999, Turkish truck manufacturer BMC began to export its own design trucks to the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. BMC also signed a contract with Iran covering delivery of 10,000 buses and trucks in CBU or CKD/SKD form –for assembly to Iran. As to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, Turkish manufacturers are becoming world production centers of global companies, whom they have licence agreements with. Today 15 companies are manufacturing various types of vehicles

  • The Determinants of Location Choices of Automotive Producers in Turkey
JÖ N K Ö P I N G I NTERNATIONAL B U S I N E S S S CHOOL JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY The determinants of location choices of automotive producers in Turkey Abstract: Turkish automotive industry achieved a remarkable growth in the last two decades. This growth has been led by three closely located northwest cities of the country; namely Bursa, Kocaeli and Sakarya. The first purpose of this study is signposting the geographical concentration of automotive industry in Turkey. The second goal of the study is to find out the determinants of the location-choices of automotive producers in Turkey by using export of motor vehicles and related industry products figure at city level as dependent variable. The results show that there is geographical concentration of the automotive industry. The existence of motorway structure and number of motor vehicles per thousand citizens are the most significant factors to determine the location choices of automotive producers in Turkey. • Technical Efficiency Analysis in the Automotive Industry: a Stochastic Frontier Approach
International Journal of Economics, Commerce and Management United Kingdom Vol. IV, Issue 4, April 2016 http://ijecm.co.uk/ ISSN 2348 0386 TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY ANALYSIS IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY: A STOCHASTIC FRONTIER APPROACH Gürkan Çalmaşur Erzurum Technical University, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Turkey [email protected] Abstract Automotive industry can be regarded as an example of differentiated oligopoly in which a limited number of firms produce differentiated goods. The main objective of this research is to make a detailed analysis on the technical efficiency of the Turkish automotive industry for the period 1992-2012 with a stochastic frontier approach. In order to satisfy this objective, panel data related to 20 firms for the period of 1992-2012 are used; the technical efficiency levels of the firms are presented by using different models with stochastic frontier approach; and the factors that cause inefficiency are identified. As a result, the technical efficiency levels of the firms that operate in the Turkish automotive sector in the related period and the factors that cause inefficiency are estimated with a translog stochastic frontier production approach. Moreover, a positive relationship is found between the capacity utilization ratio, export intensity, foreign capital ratio, firm size and technical efficiency. On the other hand, a negative relationship is detected between the firm age and technical efficiency. Keywords: Technical Efficiency, Production Frontier, Stochastic Frontier Approach, Time Variant Model, Turkish Automotive Industry INTRODUCTION Automotive industry is an industry composed of firms that produce motor vehicles. This dominating industry has a strategic importance for the countries. The main reason for this significant importance of the automotive industry is its close relations with other industries.

Some academicians assert that this method is inappropriate in a modern manufacturing environment. The aim of this article is to study the use of standard costing in the automotive industry, the leading manufacturing sector of Turkey. The findings show an average usage rate of 77 percent for standard costing. The majority of non-users are local small supplier firms. There are statistically significant differences between the primary and supplier industries in terms of its importance and usage. Just to name a few differences, supplier firms attach less importance to the budgetary function of the standard costing, and they mostly rely on different methods to set labour and material standards. Keywords: cost control, standard costing, management accounting, automotive industry 1.
