MIDDLESBORO — Ben Slusher spoke recently to the Middlesboro Lions Club about his experience as a member of the Kentucky Lions All State Band. As a member of that band, he attended the Interna- tional Lions Club Convention in Seattle, Wash. Slusher, a student at Middlesboro High School, plays tuba in the MHS Band. He is also a member of the Yellow Jacket football team and plays his tuba in his football uniform at halftime. He joined band members from all across the state of Kentucky in late June on the campus of Murray State University for a week of intensive practice under the direction of Lion David Caldwall. Enroute to Seattle, the group stopped at Yellow- stone, The Grand Tetons, Salt Lake City,Utah, and Nebraska. Slusher described this as the trip of a , going cross country on the July 4th holiday and see- ing all the cultural and geographical differences of the USA, from cowboys and farmers, to city dwellers. He said it reinforced his patriotism and love for his country, and his gratefulness to God for being able to live in such a great country. The highlight of the time in Seattle was the parade, which was led by the band from the Ohio State School for the Blind. He also stated that he greatly enjoyed the flag ceremony, where Lions Clubs from all over the world marched behind their flags. The Kentucky Band won second place, even though it was one of the smaller bands. Slusher said that the crowd especially loved hearing them play MHS student Ben Slusher, second from left, was one of the four tuba players in the Kentucky “My Old Kentucky Home”.
