RELEVANT EXPERIENCE October 2015 - First music guest on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah; Opened Jimmy Kimmel Live's week of shows airing from New York, playing (of course) "Welcome To New York" from 1989, the song for song interpretation of Taylor Swift's album of the same name. September 2015 - 1989 released to equal measures of confusion and acclaim: "Ryan Adams transforms Taylor Swift's 1989 into a melancholy masterpiece... decidedly free of irony or shtick" (AV Club); "There's nothing ironic or tossed off about Adams' interpretations. By stripping all 13 tracks of their pony-stomp synths and high-gloss studio sheen, he reveals the bones of what are essentially timeless, genre-less songs... brings two divergent artists together in smart, unexpected ways, and somehow manages to reveal the best of both of them" (Entertainment Weekly); "Adams's version of '1989' is more earnest and, in its way, sincere and sentimental than the original" (The New Yorker); "the universality of great songwriting shines through" (Billboard).

The long, long tide of emocore did not recede in the 2000s. Continuing the cross-pollination begun in the previous decade, New York's Coheed And Cambria, fronted by vocalist-guitarist Claudio Sanchez, carried out a historical fusion of the progressive-rock tradition and the emo-core tradition on their sci-fi tetralogy, notably In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth (2003). Pioneers of "progressive emocore" were also Breaking Pangaea in Philadelphia, who crafted the lengthy progressive emo psychodrama Turning on A Cannon To A Whisper (2001). The same city later witnessed the ascent of Circa Survive, whose fusion of hardcore, pop, metal and prog-rock peaked with Juturna (2005). Minus The Bear rejuvinated emo-core in Seattle by stretching Fugazi's original aesthetic to accommodate progressive jamming driven by guitarist Dave Knudson and keyboardist Matt Bayles, best on the EP This Is What I Know About Being Gigantic (2001) and partially on the album Highly Refined Pirates (2002). Oregon's 31 Knots were perhaps the most versatile and erudite in fusing progressive-rock and melodic/melodramatic emocore, starting with A Word Is Also A Picture Of A Word (2002).

CNN Student News - 1/18/11 CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: I'm Carl Azuz and this is CNN Student News! We're back from the long weekend and ready to kick off 10 minutes of commercial- free headlines. We start in the U.S. state of Arizona. Junior Theater Festival AZUZ: This weekend, here in Atlanta, a cast of thousands got together for the Junior Theater Festival. The event celebrates the performing arts. It takes place the same weekend as Martin Luther King Day. In recognition of his dream, students at the festival had the chance to talk about their dreams. Listen to what they had to say. KATE HILSCHER, STUDENT: I have a dream that some day kids will have a bigger voice in their communities. I feel like kids have a lot to say, but it's often not heard by the adults around them. QWANIKWIA HICKLEN, STUDENT: My dream is to become an endangered species specialist and help save a kind that's dying off slowly. ELIZABETH RENEGAR, STUDENT: A few of my dreams are to adopt a child from a foreign country and give them a home, a lot better home than they could've had. CASEY TAYLOR, STUDENT: One of my dreams is to possibly design and run lighting for large theatrical productions. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man and inspired me and many other people for wonderful dreams. AZUZ: Not the only way that people paid tribute to the civil rights leader this weekend. As Samantha Hayes reported yesterday, Americans all across the country took part in community service projects and honored Dr.

  • The Job Guarantee: Gatekeeping and Popularization
Working Paper No. 127 May 2020 The Job Guarantee: Gatekeeping and Popularization Alex Williams Research Fellow, Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity Graduate Student, Levy Economics Institute of Bard College The views expressed in this paper are solely those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. Copyright © Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity 2020 All rights reserved ISSN 2374-6475 Global-ISP.org @GISP_Tweets The Job Guarantee and Cultural Equity: Gatekeeping and Popularization Alex Williams Research Fellow, Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity Graduate Student, Levy Economics Institute of Bard College Abstract: Among DIY musicians, one often hears support for a Universal Basic Income on the logic that if rent and food are covered, one could spend more time on music. In some formulations, a cultural job guarantee aims at this explicitly: liberation of creative energies through guaranteed employment. However, technological innovations that allow the nearly zero cost creation and transmission of recordings have moved gatekeeping downstream from production to publicity and audience development. In order to address this, and implicitly challenge the anti-democratic notion that individual preferences are best expressed through markets, any culturally-focused Federal job guarantee must include provision for popularization. Starting from both Michal Kalecki’s proposition of a “political business cycle” and Alan Lomax’s idea of “cultural equity,” I argue that a cultural job guarantee must be a self-consciously left project to restructure the social system of cultural production. I follow Fred Lee’s assertion that consumers choose from available goods, rather than making production decisions. I also affirm Modern Monetary Theory’s vision of money as a boundless public utility.

Top 10 hotel songs: Hotels.com chimes in with a music roundup ahead of the Grammies January 29, 2015 Sydney, 29 January 2015: With the 57th annual Grammy awards fast approaching, the travel experts at Hotels.com dusted off their record collection to find the top 10 songs that have a hotel theme or feature a hotel name in the title. With tunes from Elvis to The Sugarhill Gang, hotels have always been a popular theme for artists from all generations and genres. 1. Hotel California – The Eagles “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave” Arguably the most famous song about a hotel, and what many consider to be one of the greatest rock songs of all time. Hotel California was released in 1976 and is often described as a metaphor for America’s decline into materialism. 2. Chelsea Hotel – Leonard Cohen “I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel, you were famous, your heart was a legend” The Chelsea Hotel in New York City was Cohen’s home away from home. The song is about an evening he spent with fellow musician Janis Joplin. He later regretted admitting the song was about Joplin, due to the nature of the lyrics. 3. Heartbreak Hotel – Elvis Presley “Just take a walk down lonely street to Heartbreak Hotel” Heartbreak Hotel was the King’s first US number one pop single and it was the most successful song of 1956. Written by Mae Boren Axton and Tommy Durden, the lyrics are based on a newspaper article about a lonely man who jumped from a hotel window.
