Lee resigned from the army in 1861, he left a 32-year career behind. A lot has been made of the reasons he resigned, the political impacts of his decision and most of all, the role he played in the South after his retirement. In fact, these things have so captured the stage of his life that the work and contributions of his previous three decades have faded almost wholly into the shadowed, flat background. But when Lee retired, who do you think knew the most about the foundations of Fortress Monroe? If not for Lee, Saint Louis might not be a river city today. She was a widow and a mother of three. She was hanged in Washington, D.C. on July 7, 1865. Those who knew her, knew that she was innocent. Most of those who didn’t know her, felt that she was one of the conspirators in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. After all, wasn’t John LibraryofCongress Wilkes Booth a friend of her son and a frequent caller at Mrs. Surratt’s Washington, D.C. boardinghouse ? The government had pronounced the woman guilty after a sixteen-week-long military trial. Neither she nor the other alleged conspirators were allowed to testify in their own defense. Nor had the charges of their crimes been read to them until the day before the trial started on May 11. The defense had no time to prepare for the hearing. In Mrs. Surratt’s case, she was arrested and taken to prison on April 17 without being told why. The writ of Habeas Corpus had long since been suspended in the United States. As Secretary of State William H. Seward once boasted to Lord Lyons, “My Lord, I can touch a bell on my right hand, order the arrest of a citizen of Ohio ; I can touch a bell again, and order the imprisonment of a citizen of New York ; and no power on earth, except that of the President, can release them.     BATTLE LINES Prince George’s County in the Civil War Lines of Protection, Spies, Freedom and Assassination from 1861 to 1865 INTRODUCTION The Civil War (1861–1865) divided America Lines were drawn throughout the country – separating state from state, family from family and brother from brother. There is little disagreement that this was one of America’s most divisive periods of history. The country was less than 100 years old and faced a serious challenge to how it was going to grow and change in the future. Maryland, in many ways, was one of the most divided states. The more agrarian southern part of the state supported the Confederacy. Right in the middle was the Federal City – Washington D.C. – surrounded by communities which aligned with the Confederacy. No greater evidence of Maryland as a divided state can be found than by viewing the Civil War through the historical eyes of Prince George’s County and its residents from 1855–1865. With an economy based on tobacco cultivation through slave labor, the tur- bulent decade before the war placed many of the county’s citizens at odds with areas to its north and west. In the 1860 election, only one man in the county voted for Abraham Lincoln.
