Dr Raul Cârstocea The Unbearable Virtues of Backwardness: Mircea Eliade’s Conceptualisation of Colonialism and his Attraction to Romania’s Interwar Fascist Movement Work in progress – please do not quote or distribute without the permission of the author In studies of Romanian intellectual history, Mircea Eliade and his multi-faceted academic, literary, and journalistic work occupy a special place. As arguably the Romanian intellectual who is best known internationally, as well as due to his interwar political commitment to the ‘Legion of the Archangel Michael’ (also known as the ‘Iron Guard’), Romania’s native fascist movement, his work has benefitted from unparalleled attention, ranging in tone from unqualified acclaim for his erudition to outright condemnation of his politics, including his alleged anti-Semitism. Surprisingly though, and especially so given the relatively recent interest in exploring the applicability of postcolonial theory to the area of Central and Eastern Europe and the possible intersections and meeting points of post- colonialism and post-socialism (see e.g. Wolff 1994; Bakić-Hayden 1995; Strayer 2001; Carey and Raciborski 2004; Kelertas 2006; Chari and Verdery 2009; Tlostanova 2009; for a criticism of such approaches and an emphasis on the differences between ‘Balkanism’ and ‘Orientalism’ see Todorova 2009; 2010), no studies so far have approached Eliade’s work in light of his experience of India at a pivotal moment in its history, that of the civil disobedience campaign, and of his subsequent reflections on this experience that would markedly influence both his scientific productions and, I argue, his politics. The few exceptions to this pattern relate exclusively to one of his novels, a semi-autobiographical fictionalised account of the love story of Eliade and Maitreyi Devi, daughter of the philosopher Surendranath Dasgupta, Eliade’s host in India (Kamani 1996; Basu 2001; Cirstea 2013). -

Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (Hum.), Vol. 60(1), 2015, pp. 17-34 TEXT WITHIN TEXT: THE SHAPING OF SUNETRA GUPTA’S MEMORIES OF RAIN ASM Maswood Akhter* Abstract Instead of venturing into the more expected readings of Sunetra Gupta’s debut novel Memories of Rain (1992) – which won her prestigious national literary award in India, the Sahitya Akademi Award for 1996 – as embodying the author’s intricate writing style or diasporic angst or desire of conveying her ideas and thought about Calcutta to a Western audience, this paper seeks to raise the issue of intertextuality in the novel. It shows how this novel is immersed in conversation with the expanse of literature produced in different periods and diverse cultural settings. Gupta’s extremely literary– even canonical– sensibility is revealed in the centrality and profusion of allusions and references that range from Euripides to Tagore. The paper argues that for a more nuanced understanding of Memories of Rain it is important to be aware of the influence and interplay of diverse texts providing the novel its context and meaning as well as shaping its narrative and characters. With all its lyrical evocation of the 1970s’ Calcutta1 and its haunting memories, Sunetra Gupta’s Memories of Rain (1992) remains rather a complex fictional narrative. Readers are at once intrigued by its sustained interior monologues, figurative language and sensuous poetic imagery, its warped chronology alternating flashbacks and fantasy with the present, or its linguistic experiments resulting in paragraph-stretched sentences conjoined by commas and overflowing grammatical halts. Polacy w Indiach i powiązania polsko-indyjskie Indie – ogólne wiadomości Indie – Republika Indii, to państwo związkowe w południowej Azji, położone na południe od najwyższego łańcucha gór – Himalajów i zajmujące cały Półwysep Indyjski. Obejmują obszar 3 287 600 km kw i mają ok. 1240 mln mieszkańców. Indie graniczą z Bangladeszem, Chinami, Pakistanem, Nepalem, Mjanmar (Birmą) i Bhutanem. Od południowego zachodu kraj otaczają wody Morza Arabskiego, zaś od południowego wschodu Zatoki Bengalskiej i Morza Andamańskiego. Największymi rzekami są Ganges, czczony przez hinduistów jako „święta rzeka", i Brahmaputra, a najwyższym szczytem Kanczendzonga położona w Himalajach na granicy z Nepalem, mająca wysokość 8586 m n.p.m. Większość kraju leży w strefie tropikalnego klimatu monsunowego (bardzo gorąco – np. w Delhi dochodzi nawet do +45 °C. - i ulewne deszcze w okresie monsunu - opady do 11 000 mm rocznie oraz groźne tajfuny u wschodnich wybrzeży), pn.-zach. ma klimat zwrotnikowy pustynny. Lasy tropikalne zajmują 15% powierzchni kraju. Indie to kraj słonia indyjskiego, pięknego i wielkiego tygrysa bengalskiego, milionów małp i kobry, której jad zabija rokrocznie ok. 50 tysięcy ludzi. Indie są demokratyczną republiką federacyjną. Kraj jest podzielony na 29 stanów, 6 terytoriów związkowych i 1 terytorium stołeczne. Stolicą państwa są Nowe Delhi (Delhi). Jest to kraj wielonarodowy. It will examine the practice and practicalities of writing in a milieu that was and to a great extent still is inhospitable to women’s intellectual development and creativity, and also reveal the diverse strategies adopted by women to subvert patriarchal attempts to constrict their creativity and control their lives and leisure.Writing fiction moreover, appears to serve for womenthe purpose of a safety valve for the release of the pent-up frustrations, agonies and unfulfilled cravings. Though their fiction they have soughtto resolve their inner dilemmas and the questions that plague them. Finally,women novelists often tend to write their own lives into their fiction, merging their own selves with those of their women protagonists, their protagonists becoming their alter ego. 'Love' in Bengali Literature and Cinema
(Mis) Reading Romance: An Enquiry Concerning Representation of 'Love' in Bengali Literature and Cinema (Abstract of the PhD thesis submitted to Centre For The Study Of Culture & Society, Bangalore, affiliated to Manipal University) Abstract This research project is an enquiry into the cultural imagination of romance within a specified historical domain. The dissertation is a study of certain moments within the cultural history of Bengal when representational constructions of ‘romantic intimacy’ get meshed with other socio-political dimensions of modern Bengali subjectivity. I have chosen Bengali literature of the colonial period, especially of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a specific genre of Bengali popular cinema of the post-colonial period, as two sites of enquiry into the cultural trajectory of romantic love. The argument shall chart this specific trajectory of the romantic imagination that is intimately linked to the substantive reformulation of cultural ‘identity’ in relation to the other socio-political parameters, which oversee the historically defined ‘identifications’ of the Bengali subject. My arguments demonstrate through illustrations from various literature and cinema, how such creative reconceptualizations in the field of romance enable the Bengali subject to gain a critical perspective on the very historical frameworks and social mandates that locate him within the aegis of modernity. Instead of tracing the linear evolution of Ideas of romance or sociological transformations within the community, my argument seeks to trace a series of significant moments which as products of creative imagination and representational work problematize the dominant ways in which the modern frameworks overseeing social life have been appropriated by the colonial and post-colonial subject. -

Thus, despite the obvious reconnection of Romanian literature to the world literary space over the last decades, the suspicion of this cultural system towards fictional processing of biographical data is explained by the post-communist condition of Romanian literature, namely by its imperative to rediscover the historical truths that have been obscured by the communist ideology. Regarding the genre conventions of the biographical novel, this study emphasizes, in contrast to much of contemporary research of this form, its predominantly literary nature, manifested by its polemic placement against modernism aesthetics, by its propensity for certain narrative motives and scenarios, and by the configuration of various specific intertextual webs.
