However, a definition of authorship as a discursively constructed function presumes shifts in authorial identity as texts cross discursive boundaries, rendering ‘international’ authorship a fragmented, unstable category. Emerging at the intersection of textual, individual and institutionalised realities, the author-function is vulnerable to reshaping by a new receiving discourse. -

Daher schien auch ihre Kritik an der Bundesrepublik für viele Leser glaubwürdig. 1991, im sogenannten deutsch-deutschen Literaturstreit aber, wurden ihr Werk und ihre Person zum Anlass einer heftigen Debatte über die Rolle der Intellektuellen im SED-Staat. Die Schriftstellerin verlor ihre herausragende Stellung als Symbolfigur intellektueller Autonomie. Christa Wolf (1929) erlebte ihre Jugend im Dritten Reich. 1949 ging sie auf das „verlockende Angebot“ ein, die „nationale Schuld los(zu)werden oder ab(zu)tragen“ und beteiligte sich aktiv am Aufbau einer sozialistischen Gesellschaft.467 Sie wurde Mitglied der Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED) und suchte Kontakt vor allem zu den Intellektuellen, die dem Nationalsozialismus widerstanden hatten. Nach dem Germanistikstudium bei Hans Mayer in Leipzig arbeitete Christa Wolf zunächst als wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin beim DDR-Schriftstellerverband, dann als Lektorin verschiedener Verlage. Für ihre Moskauer Novelle (1961) erhielt sie ihre erste Auszeichnung, den Kunstpreis der Stadt Halle. -

Presner, Chair In this dissertation I argue that Die Blechtrommel and Kindheitsmuster present, comparatively, in relation to their specific authors and societies, fictive counterparts to cultural perspectives on the National Socialist period of German history that have also been developed in the disciplines of history, sociology, and related fields with their grounding constructs. The explicative methodology is freely adapted from ideas by Edward Said into an analytic modality based on the comparison of multiple critical perspectives. I propose that the sense of the works emerges from cultural discourses and narratives of memory involving the relationship between personal subjectivity and German cultural identity. Evaluating claims of history as narrative, also interrogates the roles of individual and collective memory in the construction of those discourses and narratives, as well as analyzing the "legitimizing" narratives of nation states. As ii such, the relation of these to concepts of modernity is also an issue for discussion. That these concepts were viewed differently in the Federal Republic of Germany and German Democratic Republic has important consequences for literature produced in those societies, including Grass’s and Wolf's works, in terms of narrative viewpoint and overall communicative strategies. -

In order to trace the ways in which the cultural and linguistic displacement that are inescapable features of twentieth century European history are reflected and paralleled in literary constructions of identity, it focuses on the interplay between the autobiographical and the fictional, examining a range of texts within each writer’s oeuvre. Thus a writer’s autobiographical texts are read in the context of their fiction in an attempt to identify the problems of translating lived experience into literary discourse. The introduction offers a brief survey of the theory of autobiography in order to suggest the problems involved in classifying this notoriously hybrid genre, particularly in its modem literary forms. -

Hetrick 2012 Abstract This dissertation addresses the use of two of the great scourges in world history, tuberculosis and cancer, in the literary texts of North America and Europe. The focus of this work is on these two diseases due to their prominent status in the western world over the last several centuries. They also possess several significant commonalities: each has held the distinction of being one of the most feared diseases, each has been responsible for the deaths of countless people, and each has had a significant literary presence in Europe and North America. I first provide a chapter on each disease detailing its biological, medical, and social histories. Each chapter on the literary texts then includes discussions of noteworthy examples from a wide range of cultures in this investigation of each disease’s three primary manifestations in literature. The longer focused analyses of each paradigm concentrate on works from Germany and North America, as these literary traditions have produced particularly compelling works concerning tuberculosis and cancer. These focused analyses concern use of tuberculosis in the texts of Erich Maria Remarque, Eugene O’Neill, and Thomas Mann, and the use of cancer in the works of Brigitte Reimann, Maxie Wander, Audre Lorde, Reynolds Price, Thomas Mann, Margaret Atwood, Margaret Edson, and Christa Wolf.
