Naturbeziehung und Ökologie im Werk von Ernst Kreuder Abstract The German writer Ernst Kreuder (1903–1972, Büchner Prize 1953), best known for his book Die Gesellschaft vom Dachboden (The Attic Pretenders, 1946), the very first book by a German author published in Germany after World War 2, is now one of the lesser known authors to both academic circles and the general public. The academic interest in Kreuder’s work has been focused primarily on his role as a postwar writer, either in connection with romantic tradition, social criticism or in the context of autobiography. This dissertation offers a new reading of Kreuder’s work in the intersection between literature and ecology. The fact that the relationship between man and nature from the ecological point of view was not the object of literary representation in German prose until the 1970s makes Kreuder one of the pioneers of the ecological approach in West German literature. The analysis of Kreuder’s works presented in this dissertation lies within the scope of a relatively new research paradigm in German literary studies, the “ecologically oriented” literary criticism, which has developed as a continuation of, and later parallel to, the Anglo-American Ecocriticism. -

Firstly, thanks are due to my supervisors, Professor David Crowley and Professor Jeremy Aynsley at the Royal College of Art, for their expert guidance, moral support, and inspiration as incredibly knowledgeable and imaginative design historians. Without a generous AHRC doctoral award and an RCA bursary I would not have been been able to contemplate a project of this scope. Similarly, awards from the German History Society, the Design History Society, the German Historical Institute in Washington and the German Academic Exchange Service in London, as well as additional small bursaries from the AHRC have enabled me to extend my research both in time and geography. -
First Century German Literature and Film
Abstract Title of Document: AMERICAN BLACKNESS AND VERGANGENHEITSBEWÄLTIGUNG IN TWENTY- FIRST CENTURY GERMAN LITERATURE AND FILM Christina Wall, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Directed by: Professor Elke P. Frederiksen, Department of Germanic Studies This study represents a unique examination of the convergence of constructs of Blackness and racism in twenty-first century novels and films by white Germans and Austrians in order to demonstrate how these texts broaden discourses of Vergangenheitsbewältigung. The increased prominence of minority voices demanding recognition of their national identity within Nazi successor states has transformed white German perceptions of “Germanness” and of these nations’ relationships to their turbulent pasts. I analyze how authors and directors employ constructs of Blackness within fictional texts to interrogate the dynamics of historical and contemporary racisms. Acknowledging that discourses of ‘race’ are taboo, I analyze how authors and directors avoid this forbidden discourse by drawing comparisons between constructs of American Blackness and German and Austrian historical encounters with ‘race’. This study employs cultural studies’ understanding of ‘race’ and Blackness as constructs created across discourses. Following the example of Toni Morrison’s Playing in the Dark (1992), my textual analyses show how these constructs create a “playground for the imagination” in which authors confront modern German racism. My study begins with a brief history of German-African American encounters, emphasizing the role American Blackness played during pivotal moments of German national identity formation. The subsequent chapters are divided thematically, each one comprised of textual analyses that explore discourses integral to Vergangenheitsbewältigung. The third chapter examines articulations of violence and racism in two films, Oskar Roehler’s Lulu & Jimi (2008) and Michael Schorr’s Schultze gets the blues (2008), to explore possibilities of familial reconciliation despite historical guilt. -

Spaces Between Beginning and End.Indd
Spaces between Beginning and End: Thoughts on Peter Voigt’s Film Essay Dusk: 1950s East Berlin Bohemia BY CLAUS LÖSER Oh, joyful time of beginnings! The page white and the pencil sketches the overall plan! First line in nothingness, boldly rising through the void into everything! Excavate the ground and depth: the building will be tall. Seeing what has never been seen! Testing the new! —Bertolt Brecht, “Ach, wie doch einst ich sie sah!“1 When Peter Voigt’s documentary Dämmerung – Ostberliner Bohème der 50er Jahre (Dusk: 1950s East Berlin Bohemia) celebrated its premiere in the Grüne Salon of Berlin’s Volksbühne, only those in the know and especially interested • A 2018 DVD Release by the DEFA Film Library • A 2018 DVD Release by the DEFA viewers came to the screening. There were very few reviews. A regular theatrical release did not occur afterwards. In a certain sense, the film arrived both too early and too late. Five years earlier, it would have been a sensation. At the time of its premiere, however, the systematic—and still continuing—examination of phenomena of GDR cultural history had not yet begun. Besides, in the early 1990s, many potentially interested viewers were preoccupied with the reorganization of their daily lives that accompanied the fundamental paradigm change of 1989-90. In view of an uncertain future, affected contemporaries had no relevant interest in tracing the peculiarities of a 1950s East Berlin Bohemia, as Voigt’s title promised. The film did not fit the political mainstream either. Because, back then, the history of the GDR was, “above all, interpreted Dusk: 1950s East Berlin Bohemia in light of its inglorious end,” as film historian Ralf Schenk noted in relation to this film, in particular.2 Public discourse focused primarily on clear victim-perpetrator scenarios; perspectives that dealt with differentiated formations located between opportunism and resistance during the SED dictatorship were not in demand. -

Time, Elements and the Phoenix Hour in Lives and Poetry of Nobel Laureates and Their Celestial Twins
Time, Elements and the Phoenix Hour in Lives and Poetry of Nobel Laureates and their Celestial Twins. Elizabetha Levin Haifa, Israel E-mail: [email protected] We see that human creativity and innovation can be understood as the amplification of laws of nature… Ilya Prigogine {NL, Air} Abstract. In our times both the works and the biographies of the Nobel laureates {NL} are accessible to empirical study. Their biographic materials portray distinguished personalities as real people with their faults and weaknesses. Such biographic studies become available mainly because in our epoch the quality and quantity of psychological observation have increased dramatically. By opening the books of their own life stories, the Nobel laureates invite us to witness the circumstances of their growth and to gain a better understanding of the limits of free will and of "Zeitgeist" dynamics. Assuming that poetry is an even more valuable source of authors' attitudes towards life than their respective autobiographies, the Nobel laureates in Literature who were awarded their prizes explicitly for poetry, constitute the most informative group for biographical research. Furthermore, according to Alfred Nobel's will (1895), the poetry of the laureates should be also "the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." The ability of such laureates to inspire entire societies makes them attractive for historical research. This paper is a pioneer venture into temporology. It seamlessly blends three different types of time: calendar times, the primordial cycles of the elements and the factor of birth-time (the Theta-factor). To make this fusion possible, this essay opens with a brief Introduction written in four parts, each part being a thumbnail sketch of one of the following basic temporal aspects: definitions of time, the four elements, the Effect of the Celestial Twins (ECT) and the model of the Phoenix Clock. -
