“What if you were told that you had been selected by God to bear the savior (the world) needs so desperately?” Bishop Larry Silva posed that question to an evening congregation gathered at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the opening day of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. “Would you be greatly troubled?” the bishop asked. “Would you ultimately make the response, ‘I am the servant of the Lord’?” Reflecting on the response of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the bishop encouraged local Catholics to model her obedience and courage. We are all called in service to God, he said, to be unafraid to “share the good news of his merciful love to all who have strayed away.” The Dec. 8 Mass at the cathedral was the first of two ceremonies celebrated by Bishop Silva to begin the Year of Mercy in Hawaii. Pope Francis declared the jubilee year, focused on compassion and love, to run until Nov. 20, 2016. Joy to their world The diocesan prison ministry brought gifts and joy to the Women’s Community Correctional Center in Kailua during its annual “Star Light, Star Bright” Christmas party, Dec. 12. Star Light, Star Bright reunites women inmates and their families at the prison for a day of food, games, activities and quality time. Deacon Richard Abel, in costume, treated the children at the party to a special visit from Santa.

VATICAN CITY — On a cloudy, damp morning, Pope Francis’ voice echoed in the atrium of St. Peter’s Basilica: “Open the gates of justice.” With five strong thrusts, the pope pushed open the Holy Door, a symbol of God’s justice, which he said will always be exercised “in the light of his mercy.” The rite of the opening of the Holy Door was preceded by a Mass with 70,000 pil- grims packed in St. Peter’s Square Dec. 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception and the beginning of the extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy. Once a few miles from Jerusalem, it has been absorbed by the sprawl of the city and for all practical purposes is today a part of Jerusalem. Mary travels to meet her cousin, Elizabeth, the wife of Zachariah. Elizabeth herself is pregnant. Elizabeth’s unborn child will be John the Baptist. John had a special destiny. He would prepare the way for Christ. Since Elizabeth was past the childbearing age for a woman, her conception was regarded as miracu- lous. Elizabeth knows that Mary is expecting a child and that Mary’s child will be the messiah. Elizabeth’s unborn child understands all that is transpiring and senses God in the presence of Mary and her own unborn infant. Thus, even before birth, John testified that Jesus, also yet to be born, will be the Messiah. Reflection It is the last Sunday of Advent. Christmas prepa- rations are hectic. Everyone is in a hurry, and most are excited. Less and less attention is given the spiritual preparation for Christmas, but the church calls us to reality.
