  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night with Her Headphones On: June’S New Singles Part 2
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night With Her Headphones On: June’s New Singles Part 2. Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world Just in time for the sanitised hedonism of Ibiza, May and June have brought a slew of turgid house ‚bangers‘ that are so tired and uninspiring they make the decision to insert red hot pokers into both your ears seem like an extremely good idea. Yet, trust me when I tell you that there is some wonderful music out there. To prove the point this follow-up to last weeks article highlights some more amazing singles and EPs, from the likes of Robag Wruhme, Gardens Of God. Felix Da‘ Housecat, Len Faki, Paul Woolford, Mark E, Seth Schwarz, and Kamera.By JOHN BITTLES So, just remember boys and girls that just because it is warm and sunny outside, the beer costs over ten pounds a pint, and everyone’s IQ has just decreased by about twenty points, there is never an excuse for listening to crap tunes. After a three year break Robag Wruhme arrives on DJ Koze’s always on point Pampa Records with the lush electronic atmospherics of the Cybekks EP. Recalling the emotional house of his Thora Vukk LP from 2011, the title-track is a mid-paced chugger with a deep, metallic bass and a beautifully stirring synth, which seems to come and go as it pleases. This is a truly wonderful track which perfectly illustrates just how life-affirming dance music can be. On the flip meanwhile Volta Cobby builds slowly from humble beginnings to become an epic trancer which will break more than its fair share of hearts.

  • The DIY Careers of Techno and Drum 'N' Bass Djs in Vienna
Cross-Dressing to Backbeats: The Status of the Electroclash Producer and the Politics of Electronic Music Feature Article David Madden Concordia University (Canada) Abstract Addressing the international emergence of electroclash at the turn of the millenium, this article investigates the distinct character of the genre and its related production practices, both in and out of the studio. Electroclash combines the extended pulsing sections of techno, house and other dance musics with the trashier energy of rock and new wave. The genre signals an attempt to reinvigorate dance music with a sense of sexuality, personality and irony. Electroclash also emphasizes, rather than hides, the European, trashy elements of electronic dance music. The coming together of rock and electro is examined vis-à-vis the ongoing changing sociality of music production/ distribution and the changing role of the producer. Numerous women, whether as solo producers, or in the context of collaborative groups, significantly contributed to shaping the aesthetics and production practices of electroclash, an anomaly in the history of popular music and electronic music, where the role of the producer has typically been associated with men. These changes are discussed in relation to the way electroclash producers Peaches, Le Tigre, Chicks on Speed, and Miss Kittin and the Hacker often used a hybrid approach to production that involves the integration of new(er) technologies, such as laptops containing various audio production softwares with older, inexpensive keyboards, microphones, samplers and drum machines to achieve the ironic backbeat laden hybrid electro-rock sound. • The Queer of Color Sound Economy in Electronic Dance Music
The Queer of Color Sound Economy in Electronic Dance Music Blair Black Within electronic dance music cultures (EDMCs), musicality and experi- mentation have been indebted to black and Latinx DJs of color since its inception in the 1980s. Even today, queer DJs of color continue to push the envelope of experimental EDM by showcasing dance music from the “global south,” centering remix styles that border between hip hop and EDM, and sampling cultural references popular in queer communities of color. This article explores music’s complex entanglements with identity and community for queer people of color in underground electronic dance music scenes. To be specific, the individuals within these communities self-identify as racial/ethnic minorities on the genderqueer spectrum of non-normative gender and sexual identities (gay/lesbian, trans, non- binary, etc.). Moreover, I argue that these socio-economic positions act as an impetus of a sound economy – the shared system of socio-cultural aesthetics – for queer communities of color in EDM. The first section dis- cusses the identity politics that underlie this sound economy by tracing how intertextuality allows DJs to display these minoritarian1 perspectives. I then highlight why (re)centering racialized queer identities is radical by tracing EDM’s political shifts. Specifically, I highlight how narratives sur- rounding EDM changed due to the demographic turn in Europe during the 1990s. The last section explores the re-emergence of pivotal queer DJs of color and the scenes they founded in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York by focusing on the flows of culture and people between cities to point to a more extensive global network of racialized queer communities in constant musical and political dialogue.

BEAUTIFUL NOISE Directions in Electronic Music www.ele-mental.org/beautifulnoise/ A WORK IN PROGRESS (3rd rev., Oct 2003) Comments to [email protected] 1 A Few Antecedents The Age of Inventions The 1800s produce a whole series of inventions that set the stage for the creation of electronic music, including the telegraph (1839), the telephone (1876), the phonograph (1877), and many others. Many of the early electronic instruments come about by accident: Elisha Gray’s ‘musical telegraph’ (1876) is an extension of his research into telephone technology; William Du Bois Duddell’s ‘singing arc’ (1899) is an accidental discovery made from the sounds of electric street lights. “The musical telegraph” Elisha Gray’s interesting instrument, 1876 The Telharmonium Thaddeus Cahill's telharmonium (aka the dynamophone) is the most important of the early electronic instruments. Its first public performance is given in Massachusetts in 1906. It is later moved to NYC in the hopes of providing soothing electronic music to area homes, restaurants, and theatres. However, the enormous size, cost, and weight of the instrument (it weighed 200 tons and occupied an entire warehouse), not to mention its interference of local phone service, ensure the telharmonium’s swift demise. Telharmonic Hall No recordings of the instrument survive, but some of Cahill’s 200-ton experiment in canned music, ca. 1910 its principles are later incorporated into the Hammond organ. More importantly, Cahill’s idea of ‘canned music,’ later taken up by Muzak in the 1960s and more recent cable-style systems, is now an inescapable feature of the contemporary landscape.
