  • Bhadra Voluntary Relocation India
BHADRA VOLUNTARY RELOCATION INDIA INDIA FOREWORD During my tenure as Director Project Tiger in the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India, I had the privilege of participating in voluntary relocation of villages from Bhadra Tiger Reserve. As nearly two decades have passed, whatever is written below is from my memory only. Mr Yatish Kumar was the Field Director of Bhadra Tiger Reserve and Mr Gopalakrishne Gowda was the Collector of Chikmagalur District of Karnataka during voluntary relocation in Bhadra Tiger Reserve. This Sanctuary was notified as a Tiger Reserve in the year 1998. After the notification as tiger reserve, it was necessary to relocate the existing villages as the entire population with their cattle were dependent on the Tiger Reserve. The area which I saw in the year 1998 was very rich in flora and fauna. Excellent bamboo forests were available but it had fire hazard too because of the presence of villagers and their cattle. Tiger population was estimated by Dr. Ullas Karanth and his love for this area was due to highly rich biodiversity. Ultimately, resulted in relocation of all the villages from within the reserve. Dr Karanth, a devoted biologist was a close friend of mine and during his visit to Delhi he proposed relocation of villages. As the Director of Project Tiger, I was looking at voluntary relocation of villages for tribals only from inside Tiger Reserve by de-notifying suitable areas of forests for relocation, but in this case the villagers were to be relocated by purchasing a revenue land which was very expensive.

  • Decoding the Cultural Landscape of Badami
Decoding the cultural landscape of Badami - Towards sustainability Pragya Shankar Assistant Professor School of Enviornment and Design Navrachana University, Vadodara [email protected] There exist a great variety of Landscapes that are representative of the different regions of the world. Combined works of nature and humankind, they express a long and intimate relationship between peoples and their natural environment. Cultural landscapes testify to the creative genius, social development and the imaginative and spiritual vitality of humanity. They are part of our collective identity. (UNESCO) Culture is the agent, the natural area is the medium, the cultural landscape the result (Sauer, 1925). Cultural landscapes are as much the expression of culture as the disciplines of arts and architecture. These are reflection of the common existential ideas and represent the relationship of people with the environment. This world view is a people's more or less systematic attempt to make sense of environment. To be livable, nature and society must show order and display a harmonious relationship (Tuan, 1977). The environment has been considered detrimental in shaping of cultures by environmental determinists, whereas according to the ideas of cultural determinism, it is culture which influences the relationship of man with environment. None the less, it is an accepted premise that both, the environment and culture are very closely inter-related and have multifaceted relationship with each other, the original landscape forms the part of transcendental idea and the world view and there are landscapes removed from the original place, but represent elements in similar relationships. Cultural landscape of India Landscape in India offer the possibility of transcendental experiences, their cultural meaning going beyond views or the visual composition of forms.

Email: Abstract: Distribution of butterfly species along the latitudinal and habitat gradients of the Western Ghats was studied. The Western Ghats was divided into 14 latitude zones and the species diversity in each latitude zone, along with habitats of their occurrence, were studied using the data from literature survey for the entire Western Ghats as well as data from personal observations in the areas between 14°N to 20°N latitudes. Out of 334 species recorded from the Western Ghats, 58 species were found in all latitudinal zones, while 5 species were reported in only one latitudinal zone. Further, southern Western Ghats consisted of more number of species and more number of genera as compared to northern Western Ghats. Latitudinal zones between 10°N to 12°N had most of the Western Ghats endemic species. Habitat wise distribution of species revealed three significant clusters grossly separated by the level of human disturbance. Evergreen forest habitats supported maximum number of species endemic to the Western Ghats.
