Katie Melua biography Born on 16 September 1984 in Georgia, Katie Melua moved to Northern Ireland at the age of eight and then to England at fourteen. Katie took British citizenship in 2005. She studied at the Brit School of Performing Arts and was scouted there by the composer/producer Mike Batt who signed her to his record label Dramatico in 2002. Katie Melua is one of Britain's most successful recording artists of the millennium selling more than 11 million albums, 1 million concert tickets and receiving 56 platinum awards. Katie released her debut album Call Off The Search in 2003. The record went to number 1 in the UK early in 2004 before going on to sell 3 million copies worldwide. Katie’s sophomore album Piece by Piece was released in 2005 topping the charts throughout Europe and by 2006 Katie was the biggest-selling UK-based, female artist in the world that year. Katie’s third album, 'Pictures', released in 2007 was another international chart topper and preceded her largest world tour to date. Nominated for numerous awards, including a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist and Best Pop Act, Katie won the ECHO award (Best International Female Artist) and Goldene Kamera (Pop International Solo) in Germany in 2007. In 2010 Katie released her fourth album, the critically acclaimed The House, and in 2012 her fifth studio album Secret Symphony. She released her sixth album Ketevan in September 2013 and celebrated her 10th anniversary with a one-off concert at the Roundhouse in London. In 2016 Katie Melua released In Winter, her 7th studio album featuring the 25 voices of the Gori Women’s choir, who also hail from Georgia. In Winter broke into the UK Top 10 Album Chart landing Katie her 7th consecutive top 10 studio album, Katie joins Kate Bush as the only two British female artists in history to achieve this accolade. The album commanded some of the finest reviews of her career with the Sunday Times describing it as "bewitching…ravishing…spellbinding" and the Independent as “exquisite” and “remarkable." The associated 2016 tour, which saw Katie and the choir undertake 28 performances across 8 countries received universal acclaim from music critics and audiences alike. Following a run of summer concerts Katie will be on an extensive European tour in autumn/winter 2018, including 13 UK dates, in which she will be joined by a cast of stellar musicians, as well as members of Gori Women’s Choir’. Prior to the tour BMG will be releasing the Ultimate Collection. Compiled by Katie, the Ultimate Collection features 30 tracks from her 7 studio albums – including The Closest Thing To Crazy, Nine Million Bicycles and What A Wonderful World (a duet with the late Eva Cassidy which topped the UK charts in 2007) - as well as Katie’s rendition of Fields of Gold and two brand new recordings of Bridge Over Troubled Water and Diamonds Are Forever’. Katie has performed at many significant events including the Coronation Gala, at Buckingham Palace, in 2013; at the 46664 concert in South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s charity; and at the German leg of Live Earth in 2007. She also set a record for playing the deepest underwater concert when in 2006 she performed 303 meters below sea level. Katie has actively supported various charities including Save The Children, The Royal British Legion, Manx Cancer Help and The Children’s Hospital Charity. .
