Su Teatro Presents April 3rd- April 6th, 2014 About XicanIndie Until the late 1970s, Denver had two movie theaters for Spanish-speaking patrons. When those theaters closed, Denver’s access to Spanish-speaking films on the big screen (aside from the occasional art house run) essentially vanished. Sensing the need of a growing Spanish-speaking and bilingual community to see themselves on screen and to hear their stories told, El Centro Su Teatro started the Chicano Independent Filmmaker’s Festival in 1999. Entering the new millennium, the Chicano Independent Filmmaker’s Festival evolved into the XicanIndie FilmFest riding a wave of outstanding Latino cinema, new media and talent.. Now in its sixteenth year, the XicanIndie FilmFest thrives at our new home with regular screenings and increased capacity. Although the festival still highlights the work of local and national Chicano independent filmmakers, the four-day event also includes films from throughout the Americas. “It’s Latino World Cinema,” says XicanIndie Director and filmmaker Daniel Salazar, “Movies have always expressed our hopes and dreams as well as our common humanity.” XicanIndie: Latino World Cinema Latino film offers an important aesthetic that has been disconnected from the U.S. mainstream, due to cultural barriers that time and technology enable us to outgrow. “Latino filmmakers are masters at portraying human relationships, particularly ones that are inter-generational,” Salazar said. “Because they don’t rely on special effects and Hollywood formulas, Latino filmmakers tell more human stories, with contradictory, full-fleshed characters. We Latinos treasure our humanity and our family relationships—no matter how dysfunctional, we share full heartedly.” While there is no shortage of Chicano, Mexicano, and Latino films to be found on satellite television and DVD, the loss of Denver’s Spanish-speaking theaters limited the bilingual community’s social exchange. “In the age of home theatres and NETFLIX, film festivals create community,” Salazar said. “They offer people the opportunity to interact with filmmakers, artists and activists.” La Carpeta Roja Su Teatro Executive Artistic Director Tony Garcia, Festival Director Danny Salazar, actor Salvador Benavidez and Culture Clash’s Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza.
