1 La Frontera- The U.S. Border Reflected in the Cinematic Lens David R. Maciel1 Introduction The U.S.-Mexico border/la frontera has the distinction of being the only place in the world where a highly developed country and a developing one meet and interact.2 This is an area of historical conflict, convergence, conflict, dependency, and interdependency, all types of transboundary links, as well as a society of astounding complexity and an evolving and extraordinarily rich culture. Distinct border styles of music, literature, art, media, and certainly visual practices have flourished in the region. Several of the most important cultural and artistic-oriented institutions, such as universities, research institutes, community centers, and museums are found in the border states of both countries. Beginning in the late 19th century and all the way to the present certain journalists, writers and visual artists have presented a distorted vision of the U.S. - Mexican border. The borderlands have been portrayed mostly as a lawless, rugged, and perilous area populated by settlers who sought a new life in the last frontier, but also criminals and crime fighters whose deeds became legendary. How to Borrow North East Multi-Regional Training In-Service Training Tapes How to Borrow Tapes: Call, write, or Fax NEMRT's librarian (that's Sarah Cole). Calling is probably the most effective way to contact her, because you can get immediate feedback on what tapes are available. In order to insure that borrowers are authorized through their law enforcement agency to borrow videos, please submit the initial lending request on agency letterhead (not a fax cover sheet or internal memo form). Also provide the name of the department’s training officer. If a requested tape is in the library at the time of the request, it will be sent to the borrower’s agency immediately. If the tape is not in, the borrower's name will be put on the tape's waiting list, and it will be sent as soon as possible. The due date--the date by which the tape must be back at NEMRT--is indicated on the loan receipt included with each loan. Since a lot of the tapes have long waiting lists, prompt return is appreciated not only by the Instructors' Library, but the other departments using the video collection. -

A series of topics in this class show how archaeology is presented as unsubstantiated, occult, and speculative science about our prehistoric past. On the other hand, subjects like pyramids, cave paintings, human evolution, Stonehenge, the Maya, aliens, and popular legends fascinate people and motivate them to visit museum, archaeological sites, and also to buy archaeology books, giving archaeology a prominent place in our society and making it accessible to the general public. Inaptly the press and popular media exploit people’s interest to twist discoveries made by scientific archaeology. This course provides perspective on unsubstantiated claims made about the human past. A critical view of the popular culture and archaeology would hone critical thinking and logical reasoning, which are at the core of natural and social sciences.Students will recognize the importance of understanding the context of controversies concerning the archaeological past, and how real archaeology change misconceptions, idealizations, and fantasies related to historical events through scientific methods. Valenzuela, Arizona State University In relation to Chicano cinema, film director Lourdes Portillo has broken with traditional works filmed mostly by men and has developed instead a new female perspective—one that is internationalist and questions male hegemony. In the near past, traditional cinema never gave Chicanas the roles they deserved. This was in part because Chicano filmmakers pro - duced works that centered on the 1960s Chicano Power Movement. These Chicano male films used “forms of cultural production resolutely connected to the social and political activism of the Chicano Movement. -

Content Introduction Chicano Cinema is designed to provide students with an overview of Chicano cinema history and the skills necessary to analyze and critique cinema. Students will learn about Chicano cinema theory, aesthetics, genres, and basic cinema criticism. Students will analyze cinema through an examination of story, directing, acting, scenes, and producing to allow students to view cinema critically, to develop a systematic and convincing interpretation of the films they watch, and to acquire the ability to analyze cinema in well-constructed and persuasive essays. Course Objective Chicano Cinema is designed to assist you in learning the aesthetic and technical fundamentals of Chicano cinema arts through lectures, readings, screenings, discussions and assignments. This class provides opportunities for you to develop your skills in writing about and discussing films through semiotics. Course Description Chicano Cinema is an examination of the American film industry with respect to the Chicano’s role, historically and culturally, in the genre. A series of films, including Hollywood commercial and Chicano made films, will be screened, as part of an analysis of Chicano images and their impact on American popular culture. -

Professor Curtis Marez Ethnic Studies 189, TTH 3:30-4:50 pm Pepper Canyon Hall 120 Office Hours: Wed. 1-3, Thurs 2-3, SSB 224 Chicana/o Media Studies This course is a historical survey of Chicana and Chicano media from roughly 1950 to the present. The media we will study include film (documentaries, feature films, experimental shorts), television (news, situation comedies, telenovelas), and new media (digital and internet based art, communications technologies). In addition the course is organized around three themes: 1) Media and social movements, including the United Farm Workers and other social justice movements; 2) Visual representation and issues of gender, sexuality and power; and 3) The interrelations among different media, or Chicana/o multimedia productions. The goals of the course include learning about Chicana/o history, politics, and culture through different media and gaining the critical tools to analyze Chicana/o media and media more broadly. There are two textbooks for the course: Rodolfo Acuña, Occupied America and Rosa Linda Fregoso, The Bronze Screen, both for sale at the UCSD bookstore and on reserve in Geisel Library. Other readings are on electronic reserves. Unless otherwise noted, all films are on reserve in the Film and Video Library, 1st floor, Geisel Library. Course Requirements: --Regular attendance. Students should come to class prepared to discuss assigned readings and screenings. More than 2 unexcused absences may affect your grade. --Two 5-7 page papers, due at the start of class on 10/14 and 12/2. The essays should construct an argument about a particular media example and draw on at least two secondary sources. -

Press Release 12 January 2016 (For immediate release) SIDNEY POITIER TO BE HONOURED WITH BAFTA FELLOWSHIP London,12 January 2016: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts will honour Sir Sidney Poitier with the Fellowship at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 14 February. Awarded annually, the Fellowship is the highest accolade bestowed by BAFTA upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, television or games. Fellows previously honoured for their work in film include Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Christopher Lee, Martin Scorsese, Alan Parker and Helen Mirren. Mike Leigh received the Fellowship at last year’s Film Awards. Sidney Poitier said: “I am extremely honored to have been chosen to receive the Fellowship and my deep appreciation to the British Academy for the recognition.” Amanda Berry OBE, Chief Executive of BAFTA, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Sidney Poitier is to become a Fellow of BAFTA. Sidney is a luminary of film whose outstanding talent in front of the camera, and important work in other fields, has made him one of the most important figures of his generation. His determination to pursue his dreams is an inspirational story for young people starting out in the industry today. By recognising Sidney with the Fellowship at the Film Awards on Sunday 14 February, BAFTA will be honouring one of cinema’s true greats.” Sir Sidney Poitier’s award-winning career features six BAFTA nominations, including one BAFTA win, and a British Academy Britannia Award for Lifetime Contribution to International Film.
