These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. Scopus id 56659374000 Abstract In the last decade a new kind of Tamil film was noticed, widely celebrated as new wave, neo-noir, ‘Madurai genre’ and even as a backlash to the ‘Rasigar Mandram’(Fan Clubs) Stars of mainstream cinema. The rise of such films was in itself an achievement considering the commercial stranglehold of the politico-cultural ecosystem in the Tamil film industry. The new directors moved away from the bubble of ‘mass scene’(grand super hero entry scene) appearances, political innuendos, super star ‘punch’ dialogues and fan club worship of pouring milk on opening day giant-size ‘cutouts’. What the new Tamil films did portray were marginalized, subaltern low-caste characters with aspirations built around grim storylines, expository dialogues and dark themes. This article endeavors to thematically analyse three ‘new wave’ Tamil films and trace the underlying strains of a new generation narrative drawn out from the dirty underbelly of ‘post- Dravidian Rajni-persona Superstar cinema’. Slated for a September 2011 release, the film will have a new star cast, with music by debut composer Prasanna and camera-work by Vijay Milton. Next is the action packed entertainer Vettai, releasing in November 2011. Directed by Lingusamy himself, the film stars popular South stars Arya, Madhavan, Sameera Reddy, Ashutosh Rana and Amala Paul. Yuvan Shankar Raja composes the music and Nirav Shah is the DOP. 2012 will see a film from Prabu Solomon, who recently delivered the critically acclaimed super hit film Mynaa. His next titled Kumki will feature the upcoming star in the making - Vikram Prabhu, son of popular actor Prabhu and grand son of Sivaji Ganesan. With this association, UTV Motion Pictures has six releases lined up in Tamil cinema, beginning with Deivathirumagal (releasing on July 15th), followed by Cheran and Prasanna starrer Muran ; three films with Thirrupathy Brothers; and finally Mysskin’s Mugamoodi starring Jiiva in April/May 2012. With a slate of successful films like Ullathai Alli Tha, Mettukudi, Superstar Rajinikanth’s Arunachalam, Kamal Haasan’s Anbe Sivam, Winner, Giri, London, Rendu to his credit, Sundar C is back to writing and directing with his latest venture Masala Café. The film slated to be a comic entertainer stars the current young heroes Vimal, “Mirchi” Shiva, Anjali, Santhanam among others.
