These films actualize region as a cinematic imaginary through its authenticity markers – caste/ist practices explicitly, which earlier films constructed as a ‘trope’. The paper uses the concept of Heterotopias to analyse the recurrence of spectacle spaces in the construction of Madurai, and the production of caste in contemporary films. In this pursuit, it interrogates the implications of such spatial discourses. UTV announces its first Super Hero project in Tamil - MUGAMOODI ~The first ever movie on martial arts with industry stalwarts coming together for the ambitious project~ Mumbai, Thursday, June 30, 2011: UTV Motion Pictures announced today, its first Super Hero project in Tamil, Mugamoodi, to be written and directed by acclaimed director Mysskin, and starring Jiiva of “Ko” fame and Narain of “Anjathey” fame, in lead roles. The technicians, heroine and artistes for other lead roles are currently being finalized. This will be the first ever Tamil movie to be made focusing on extensive martial arts, and promises to be an action packed entertainer and a treat for kids and families alike. Mysskin and Jiiva, two bright talents from the Tamil film industry, will come together for the first time in this project. Popular actor Narain will play a role he has never been seen in before. Both actors Jiiva and Narain will undergo special martial arts training with experts flown in from the Shaolin Temple of Martial Arts in China. An extensive hunt for the heroine of the film is now underway. The story is based on the theme of the superhero that lies dormant in every one of us. Destiny pushes a love struck young man into a dangerous world of adventure. How he fights the evil incarnate and becomes the savior of society is what Mugamoodi is about. The pre production on the project is already in progress, including scouting for the appropriate technical team to work on the film and exotic locales overseas to film the songs.

Scopus id 56659374000 Abstract In the last decade a new kind of Tamil film was noticed, widely celebrated as new wave, neo-noir, ‘Madurai genre’ and even as a backlash to the ‘Rasigar Mandram’(Fan Clubs) Stars of mainstream cinema. The rise of such films was in itself an achievement considering the commercial stranglehold of the politico-cultural ecosystem in the Tamil film industry. The new directors moved away from the bubble of ‘mass scene’(grand super hero entry scene) appearances, political innuendos, super star ‘punch’ dialogues and fan club worship of pouring milk on opening day giant-size ‘cutouts’. What the new Tamil films did portray were marginalized, subaltern low-caste characters with aspirations built around grim storylines, expository dialogues and dark themes. This article endeavors to thematically analyse three ‘new wave’ Tamil films and trace the underlying strains of a new generation narrative drawn out from the dirty underbelly of ‘post- Dravidian Rajni-persona Superstar cinema’. UTV signs three film deal with leading South Producer-Director N. Lingusamy Mumbai, July 11, 2011: UTV Motion Pictures today announced a three film deal with the renowned South Indian Producer-Director - N. Lingusamy of Aanandham, Run, Sandakozhi, Bheema and Paiyya fame. The studio will co-produce, market and distribute three power packed films - Vettai, Vazhakku Enn 18/9 and Kumki, in association with the director’s own banner, Thirrupathy Brothers Film Media. The first film Vazhukku Enn 18/9, will be written and directed by ace director Balaji Sakthivel, who has directed blockbusters like Kadhal and Kalloori. Slated for a September 2011 release, the film will have a new star cast, with music by debut composer Prasanna and camera-work by Vijay Milton. Next is the action packed entertainer Vettai, releasing in November 2011.
