Angelo Cortese Collection

Biographical Note Angelo Cortese was born into a music-loving family in Marsicovatre, Italy on December 11, 1886 and moved as a baby to London, Ontario, where his family happened to live across the street from Guy Lombardo. The Lombardo and Cortese families inspired each other to excel as musicians. Angelo was encouraged to begin music lessons at an early age by his father, a professional violinist, and he eventually became an accomplished harp player and studied in Paris with world famous harpist Alphonse Hasselmans. His talent on the harp was so great, he eventually came to be known as “America’s Premier Harpist.” Along with his brothers, Joseph and Jack, the Cortese brothers toured together as a harp, violin and flute trio, called the Cortese Trio. After moving to Memphis in 1911 to join the Memphis Symphony Orchestra as a harpist, Angelo convinced his brothers to move to here as well. Together, they formed the Cortese Brothers music booking agency in 1912 and brought many world-renowned artists here, including Rachmaninoff, Amelita Galli-Curci, Freda Hempel, the Civic and many opera and symphony companies. Angelo also served as a principal in the O.K. Houk Piano Company and ran and taught at the Southern Conservatory of Music in Memphis, which was the largest harp school of its kind in the U.S. A muscle ailment forced him to formally retire as a full-time musician and the music booking business folded in 1929 at the beginning of the Great Depression. Yet, Angelo continued playing harp for many years at funeral services at J.T. Hinton & Son along with his brother, Joseph, who played violin. Angelo and Joseph together co- owned Krosstown Kleaners while Angelo also began a successful and long career as a real estate broker.

Angelo Cortese Collection

Scope and Contents

Amounting to 1.25 linear feet, the material housed in the Angelo Cortese Collection was donated to the Memphis and Shelby County Room by Cortese’s family after his death. The large majority of the material relates to Angelo’s career as a real estate broker. Included in the collection are receipts, correspondence, trust deeds, legal documents, contracts and itemized lists of building materials and their cost. The material covers the first decade of the 1900s to the 1940s and provides a great deal of insight into the real estate and home construction and maintenance businesses during that time. The collection consists primarily of the seemingly mundane paperwork necessary to run a business, but when viewed together, the papers give a fascinating view of the many aspects of running a successful real estate brokerage. In addition to providing a great deal of information about the cost of building materials and repairs and modifications to structures in the first half of the 20th century, the collection shows the amount a typical person might pay for bills such as property taxes or water bills. Many prominent local businesses are represented in the papers, including Marx & Bensdorf and Union Planters Bank & Trust Company. A few items in the collection relate to Angelo’s involvement in the Kiwanis Club, his music booking business and his work as a musician. A humorous short story about the Kiwanis is included, along with pricing information for harps and seating diagrams of music venues. The material is divided into seven themes: Insurance, Legal Information, Financial Information, information about Individuals with Accounts, Correspondence, Notes, and Miscellaneous. Single photocopies or scans of unpublished writings in these papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research.
