Mawang Dui 馬王堆 - the Horse King Mound - is an archaeological site located in Changsha, China. It is the site of three tombs belonging to the first Marquis of Dai, his wife, and a male who is believed to be their son. The site was excavated from 1972 to 1974. Most of the artifacts from Mawangdui are displayed at the Hunan Provincial Museum. This discovery was monumental, one of the most significant of the 20th century and has changed our view of the history of medicine and Daoism in China. The tomb contained various medical texts, including depictions of qigong (dao yin) exercises. For our purposes we will mainly focus on these philosophical and medical texts, but the tombs contained political and historical texts as well. the texts. These text were “written to advise ruling Han dynasty authorities on how to attune themselves to the cosmos at a time of rapidly changing political and social climate.” From the sleeve of Yates' Five Lost Classics : “In 1973, among the many unique documents discovered in the richly furnished tomb of a Han-dynasty aristocrat, were five books written on silk, primary texts of Huang-lao Daoism and Yin-yang philosophy that had been lost to mankind for more than 2,000 years. A discovery as important in China as the unearthing of the Dead Sea Scrolls was in the West, the Mawangdui texts created a sensation when they were first published, even leading to the foundation of a new religion on Taiwan… The recovery of the five lost classics sheds new light on a critical transitional period of Chinese political and intellectual history. -

Urbanization is viewed, as in much of the economic historical literature on the topic, as an indirect indicator of economic development and structural change. The development of the urban system can therefore tell us a lot about long-term trends in the Chinese economy between 1100 and 1900. During the Song the level of urbanization was high, also by international standards – the capital cities of the Song were probably the largest cities in the world. This remained so until the late Ming, but during the Qing there was a downward trend in the level of urbanization from 11–12% to 7% in the late 18th century, a level at which it remained until the early 1900s. In our paper we analyse the role that socio–political and economic causes played in this decline, such as the changing character of the Chinese state, the limited impact of overseas trade on the urban system, and the apparent absence of the dynamic economic effects that were characteristic for the European urban system. -

Arab merchants had an important role in trade relations between China and the West. Ningbo mosque was initially built in 1003 during Northern Song period by Muslims traders who had migrated from Arab lands to settle in China. Through ongoing research of representative Muslim architecture, such as Chinese Mosques, this paper seeks to shed light on the artistic features of this mosque. Many of the key characteristics of this distinctive ethnic heritage are based on commonly held religious beliefs and on the relationship between culture and religion. This paper aims to study the characteristics of Chinese mosques architecture, through studying one of the most important planning patterns of the traditional courtyards plan Known as Siheyuan, and it will also make a practical study on Ningbo Yuehu Mosque. The result of this study shows that the Ningbo Yuehu mosque is like Chinese mosques which follows essentially the norms of Chinese planning, layout design, and wooden structures. Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage. (A 5.88) The (Ahitāya) Thera Sutta (A 5.88) is a vital warning that grounding in right view is imperative especially when we are presenting or representing the Buddha Dharma. The more people respect us, or listen to us, or turn to us for spiritual help, and the more we have the means of mass-propagating our Buddhist views, the more carefully we have to ascertain rightness and moral consequences of our efforts. The point is that status, learning, seniority, fame, wealth, and resources, advantageous as they may be in Buddhist work, are not sufficient standards for truth. While it is true that whatever we express are merely our own opinions, we must have the moral re- sponsibility at least to ensure that such opinions or facts reflect the true Dharma. Much as we have the freedom to publicize the teachings of a particular teacher or group, we must accept the fact that this may not be the only view of the true Dharma. The final test of what we propagate must be Dharma-based. The true teachings always stand above the teacher.1 After the Buddha‘s time, especially as Buddhism grows beyond India, such standards are not always possible, for various reasons. At first, Buddhism appears to change the culture, but in due course it is the culture that changes Buddhism, often turning it into a system vastly different, even contrary to the Dhar- ma of the Buddha. -

Ho* This article explores and analyzes the fourth century Chinese legal official and legal scholar Liu Song’s (d. 300) theory of adjudication through a full translation into English (the first translation of its kind) of his famous “Memorial on Adjudication,” which urged judicial and legal reforms during the reign of Emperor Hui (r. 290–306) of the Western Jin dynasty (265–316). This article argues that Liu believed that written law should reign supreme over other factors (e.g., societal needs, public opin- ion) in adjudicating cases. He was also one of the first major Chinese legal thinkers to explicitly set forth what we would today call the “legality prin- ciple.” But while Liu’s theory of adjudication was centered on written law, it was also motivated by a desire to control the power and discretion of judicial officials and preserve the authority of the emperor. Liu’s theory of adjudication is significant in the history of Chinese legal thought as it runs counter to the so-called “qing-li-fa” (QLF) theory of adjudication, which has strongly influenced contemporary theoretical accounts and descriptions of traditional Chinese law as a whole. -

The manufacturing and drinking arts in the Song dynasty. Shen Dongmei The Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences 5 Jiannei Road, Beijin 100732, P.R. of China Summary Crumby-cake tea was the main form of tea production in the Song period, and it was steamed green tea. It had mainly six working procedures: plucking, picking, steaming, grinding, compressing, and baking. The various particular standards in each procedure formed the character of tea in the Song period, which was obviously different from tea in the Tang period. Corresponding to the shape of dust tea, the leading style of tea drinking in the Song period was called pointing tea, which had five steps, such as compressed tea grinding, sieving tea, optimizing the tea brewing, warming cup by fife, and pointing tea. Each of the five steps requires special utensils. It is only all the steps did its best can the tea infusion be fme. Fencha (tea game) and Doucha (tea competition) was the artistic, emulative form of pointing tea, all of which correlated to the leisurely and elegant lives of literati in Song China. In the course of tea culture history, pointing tea, the drinking art of the Song period, formed a connecting link between boiling tea of the Tang period and brewing tea of the Ming and Qing periods. Pointing tea 'was spread to Japan and other countries and areas from China in the Song period, making its particular contribution to the tea culture of the world. It has thousands of color combinations for designers easily to choose a color to achieve their design purpose. My thesis is focusing on making a special Chinese color guide and a series of Chinese color combinations, which are close to Chinese people’s aesthetic. My color guide could help designers easily decide which color they would like use while they are designing for Asian audience. My hypothesis is the colors found in Chinese porcelain art suggest color palettes that will appeal to Asian's visual aesthetic. Porcelain culture has existed for thousands of year in Asia. Those colors not only represent the technical conditions of their time, they also deeply reveals the social and culture background, aesthetic psychology of the times. Until today, porcelain colors deeply affected East Asian aesthetic trends. On the other hand, sociological and cultural chromatics is becoming more and more important today. The mental imagery of color reveals the perception, emotion, idea, and motivation of human beings. The purpose of my thesis is to refine key colors from porcelains; find out and build up its own application principles for designer’s use, and prove my hypothesis that porcelain color could satisfy Asian people’s taste.
