Eugene du Pont Jr. was born July 7, 1873 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was the son of Eugene E. du Pont (1840-1902) and Amelia Elizabeth du Pont (1842-1917). Eugene E. du Pont was the president of the DuPont Company from 1889 until his death in 1902.

Scope and Content

The collection contains the personal papers of Eugene du Pont, Jr., and the records of the Kinloch Gun Club, a private shooting club which he founded. It also contains a separate collection of correspondence between Alfred I. du Pont, vice president and general manager of the DuPont Company, with his assistant Frank L. Connable, which is an important source for the history of the company in the early 1900s.

The Alfred I. du Pont-Frank Connable letters were written when Alfred du Pont was in South Dakota, establishing residency so that he could file for divorce from his first wife, Bessie Gardner du Pont. The file is packed with practical instructions from Alfred du Pont for handling all aspects of the company's affairs. Much friendly humor is found throughout. The file is particularly strong on labor relations, and on the 1906 strike at the Brandywine Mills in particular. The correspondence also discusses strategies for corporate organization, expansion of production facilities, Anglo-German powder contributions, the bonus system, safety problems, and the work of the Eastern Laboratory and the Experimental Station.

The personal papers are primarily concerned with family matters. There is a small body of papers relating to the Standard Stoker Company, a manufacturer of automatic stokers for locomotives. Eugene du Pont served as Vice President and Frank L. Connable had served as President of the company.

Another small set of correspondence from Eugene du Pont's brother, Alexis I. du Pont, and Frank L. Connable. The series contains letters on the death of Eugene du Pont, Sr., and his estate papers.

The records of the Kinloch Gun Club near Georgetown, South Carolina, of which Eugene du Pont, Jr., was founder and president, include organization papers, account, reports, plans of the club house, records of kills, employment files, and notes on federal legislation on migratory birds.
