DROLET JANUARY·FEBRUARY.1979 MEET Ernie Hills, a successful businessman from Medford, Okla., will lead us into the fifth decade of barbershopping. Hills be­ came international president on January 1 and brings with him a vast background in administrative leadership from both in and out of S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Ernie joined the Society in 1953 as a member of the Wichita Falls, Tex. Chapter. In 1956, he moved to the Enid, Okla. Chapter where he has held continuous membership since (except for a one·year hitch in the Dallas "Big D" Chapter while attending mortu­ ary school) ," Like most of the administrators before him, Ernie has moved through almost all the administrative offices at chapter, dis­ trict and international level. He has been program and administrative vice presi· dent, president and chorus director of his chapter. At district level he served as area counselor, division vice president, execu­ tive vice president and president (two terms), He has been an international board member, vice·presidentltreasurer and vice president before becoming inter­ national president. He is also a certified Interpretation judge. A graduate of the University of Okla­ homa, where he sang in the men's Glee Club, he is also a graduate of the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Born in Enid, Okla., Ernie has lived in Medford, Okla. all his life. He operates a family-owned furniture store and funeral home in Medford. A member of the Methodist Church, Ernie sings in the choir and is presentiy chairman of the board of trustees

First District Quartet contest held at Milwaukee. 1946 First District Chorus contest of entire Society held at Oshkosh, WI 1947 Name of District changed to Land O’Lakes District Assn of Chapters and later enlarged to include MN and Upper Peninsula of MI. Int’l Convention held at Milwaukee. Milwaukee Chorus introduces Willis Diekema’s “Keep America Singing”. 1948 O.H.King Cole of Manitowoc and Sheboygan chapters elected International President. International Home Building Fund started with contribution by Sheboygan chapter. Manitoba added to LO’L Assn. 1949 Achievement Awards to chapters inaugurated. O.H.King Cole reelected Int’l President. First District Directory published. 1950 Harmony News, first district monthly publication of entire Society published with Hans Beyer as editor.     Great Northern Union Takes 8Th in Indy!

    Member of 10,000 LAKES DIVISION – LAND O’ LAKES DISTRICT Volume 11 #3 GNUsNews July 2006 Great Northern Union takes 8th in Indy! The Great Northern Union came back from International without a medal this July taking 8th place in the chorus contest. On the bright side, it is the 20th consecutive appearance for the GNU in the competition, something no other chorus has done in the history of the Barbershop Harmony Society, and the GNU has always placed in the top 10 internationally. The contest was won by the Vocal Majority from Dallas, Texas who won their 10th gold medal. Other notable performances included the Westminster Chorus from California who placed second just 17 points behind Dallas and our other Land O’ Lakes district chorus, Greendale’s Midwest Vocal Express, got back in the medals taking 5th place with a very creative “fish” set.     HISTORY OF BARBERSHOP compiled by David Wright Lesson 8: GUARDIANSHIP Judging reform. The next decade would see a change of judging systems that would slow the evolution of the style, so that change in the this era would be far less profound than in the previous. At the same time, the barbershop sound continued to undergo refinement. A disqualification at International. At the Los Angeles contest a quartet called the Potomachords was disqualified on Arrangement for the song "This Is All I Ask." The implied harmonic content of this song was not considered to be in the barbershop style. Such disqualifications were rare at the time, and the situation was not handled well. The announcement was made from the stage, following their performance: "The Potomochords have been disqualified for a flagrant violation of the barbershop style." Later Arrangement Category Specialist Sam Stahl apologized for this in the Harmonizer. I do not know of any other disqualification at an International Contest. The Executive Committee subsequently recommended to the C & J Committee that henceforth disqualifications should not be announced from stage, but rather, simply be noted on the score sheet. This became the practice, and remains in place today. (In 1993 the term “forfeiture” replaced “disqualification”.) Grundy writes “Each Time I Fall In Love”. At one time, Lyle Pilcher, who was a good friend of S. K. Grundy's, had told the Sundowners to write to Grundy for music. This was at about the time Grundy was moving to California to work for Lawrence Welk, and he never answered. In 1967 at the Los Angeles Convention, Lyle encountered Grundy and jokingly reminded him that he had never responded to the Sundowners' request.
