1 President’s Report

The year 2013 has been an incredibly successful one of ground-breaking creativity and inspiring community engagement for the Kelowna Art Gallery. As Board Chair, it has been my honour to work with a dedicated and talented staff team, fellow Board members, and volunteers to bring the KAG’s vision to life.

This year, we were inspired to look at art through a new lens with the Just Imagine exhibition, which showcased works by people with visual impairments. Internationally-acclaimed artist Douglas Walker drew us into his blue world with jaw-dropping, mega-size murals in Other Worlds. KAG literally broke ground with a new living exhibition in the courtyard space, called A Green Desire, by local artist Kyle Zsombor. Visitors to the Kelowna International Airport continued to be delighted by commissions created by artists Wanda Lock and Glenn Clark.

World-class exhibitions and engaging programming would not be possible without the generous support of KAG donors and members. The Board and staff extend sincere thanks to those leaders in our community who have made the Gallery part of their philanthropic vision.

In the spring we held a new and innovative fundraising event–Appetite for Art–marrying guests’ passion for good food, great local wines and beverages, and outstanding visual arts. Proceeds from this event directly contributed to important programming for children and adults with disabilities so they can explore a world of creativity and expression through art. At the Kelowna Art Gallery an important priority is to support and promote the collection of original art. We recognized that auction-style fundraisers were not always resulting in the intended benefits for artists and to awareness of fair-market value for creative endeavours. So as a Board, we created a new policy stating that KAG will not do auction-style fundraising of pieces from artists’ holdings, and instead will offer works of art for sale at prices equal to their fair-market value, in support of both the Gallery and the artists.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is honoured to be one of the City of Kelowna’s cultural institutions. And thanks to the City’s Cultural Services Department we had an opportunity as Board and staff to come together with the Rotary Centre and Kelowna Museums to share experiences, learning, and best practices. We appreciate this important connection with the City and our colleagues in the cultural community, and look forward to further collaboration with partners in this sector to enhance all artistic endeavours and productivity.

Sincere thanks to two long-serving members of the KAG Board who are leaving us this year – accomplished artist Mary Smith McCulloch, and lawyer Laura Myles. Your input and dedication has truly made a difference. And we’d like to welcome two new members to the Board – Dylana Bloor and Joanna Wrzesniewski. Together we will continue to inspire, provoke, and create for many years to come.

Respectfully submitted,

Marla O’Brien President

2 Executive Director’s Report

The Kelowna Art Gallery is a place where our members, visitors, and schoolchildren can come to be inspired, to learn, create, debate, and be challenged. Ensuring these kinds of outcomes places a huge responsibility on the Gallery, its Board of Directors, and its staff, that is to constantly identify and develop fresh exhibitions and programs that engage the varied audiences that we serve.

The public face of the gallery is only one part of what we do. Behind the scenes, we work as team to improve operations, make use of new tools, and form new partnerships in the community – all with the goal of effectively, memorably, and meaningfully serving the public. The past year has been one of many accomplishments, both operationally and in terms of programs. This Annual Report summarizes the excellent work undertaken by the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers in the twelve months of 2013.

The installation of ten exhibitions and accompanying publications (both print and digital) was overseen by Curator, Liz Wylie. Liz was assisted by Registrar Christina Hedlund until March, 2013. We welcomed Clea Haugo in August, 2013, who joined the Gallery team as Registrar.

We were pleased to commission the first Artist’s Garden Project in the Rotary Courtyard space in the spring, and I look forward to exploring future artist-created gardens in the years to come.

Two regional artists were commissioned to produce work for the Kelowna International Airport satellite exhibition space.

In 2013, the Kelowna Art Gallery toured two exhibitions to five public art galleries in three Canadian provinces.

We were privileged to be able to add two important works of art to our permanent collection by means of generous donations.

The Gallery has focused its educational activities on partnering collaboratively with other community organizations and ensuring our programs are accessible. Head of Public Programming, Renee Burgess, and Education Co-ordinator, Brenda Feist, have ensured that a diverse array of scholastic programs and life-long learning opportunities in the visual arts are available to citizens of all ages in our region. They also organized several community-based exhibitions in the Front Project Space.

Marketing and Events Co-ordinator, Joshua Desnoyers increased the Gallery’s profile in the media and the community at large. In addition to many opening receptions, Joshua headed-up two GO! Party events as well as the inaugural Appetite For Art fundraising event in 2013. In addition, several organizations and individuals rented space at the Gallery to host workshops and receptions.

Kyle L. Poirier, KAG’s Graphic Designer, produced high-quality print and online exhibition catalogues and marketing materials. Kyle also advanced our IT capacities significantly in 2013 by upgrading our website, and increasing digital access to the Gallery’s resources.

Preparator Mike O’Doherty worked with the curatorial team and all staff to ensure that the exhibitions were professionally hung and the facility was well-maintained. Thanks to Administrative Assistant Penny Hechter (July, 2013). We welcomed Tanya Nahachewsky to this position in October, 2013. Thanks to Gallery Assistants for their continued commitment to offering excellent hospitality to thousands of Gallery visitors over the year.

3 Executive Director’s Report

Gallery volunteers number over one hundred, and we are thankful for the assistance they offer with gallery openings, GO! Parties, and special events. We are happy to have our well-trained crew of docents who assist with delivering the Gallery’s tours and studio activities to the students of School District #23.

I am pleased that auditors KPMG presented 2013 financial statements and a year-end audit that meets all the requirements for by a non-profit organization, and I am happy to report that the Kelowna Art Gallery is in a solid financial position. We extend our thanks to the funding agencies that provide operating support to the Gallery: the City of Kelowna, The Canada Council for the Arts, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia. Public and educational programs in 2013 were supported by School District #23, the Regional District of the Central Okanagan, the Vancouver Foundation, and the Central Okanagan Community Foundation. As always, we are indebted to Gallery members, donors, sponsors, and visitors who all play important roles in ensuring we remain an important cultural organization in our community.

Nataley Nagy Executive Director

4 Curator’s Report

In the 2013 year we were pleased to present a varied array of ten exhibitions. Our commitment is to generate provocative exhibition programming for the community and our visitors, and to foster collaborations with other galleries, as well as bring important touring exhibitions to Kelowna. All this is in keeping with our mandate to support and promote the work of contemporary Canadian artists. Our curatorial aim is to provide a changing slate of exhibitions that reflects the wide variety of approaches to artistic practice and art making in Canada. From our small solo shows in the Mardell G Reynolds Gallery to the large exhibitions in our climate-controlled space, the Treadgold/ Bullock Gallery, we set out to showcase a wide variety of work by all sorts of intriguing artists. We continue to select two local artists annually who are commissioned to produce new work for solo installations on our forty-foot-long wall at the departures area of the Kelowna International Airport.

Our publications that accompany the exhibitions are considered an integral function of the public gallery network, as they disseminate and preserve information about the artists and their work, and provide a forum for in-depth curatorial discussion and analysis. Our series of black-and-white, pamphlet-style catalogues for the Reynolds Gallery shows are inexpensive to produce and are therefore free to the visiting public. It is a curatorial cornerstone at the Kelowna Art Gallery that List of Publications 2013 each exhibition be accompanied by a publication. 10 Public Programming Report

The year 2013 was a rewarding one that saw some exciting community projects and collaborations. The Gallery’s core programs such as our School Tour Program, Art Adventures, our high school exhibition Art in Action, and Family Sundays, continue to be well received, and we engaged children and youth in a variety of dynamic exhibition-related programs. In 2013 we also had a lot of success with our Engaging with Art, and Quick Talks programs, which were developed by Education Coordinator Brenda Feist. For a listing of the various programs, and the names of instructors and people who were instrumental in bringing these programs to life, please see the Public Programming listing on the following pages.

13 Marketing and Events

In 2013 the exhibitions, public programming, and special events at the Kelowna Art Gallery received exceptional coverage in print, on radio and television, on the internet, and through social media channels.

In print media, advertising space was purchased to promote our exhibitions. These display ads were included in national publications such as Border Crossings, Canadian Art, Galleries West, and Preview – The Gallery Guide. Articles and editorial coverage also appeared in Canadian Art, AMA – Art Media Agency, The Tyee, Border Crossings, Galleries West, and Preview – The Gallery Guide. Exhibitions, public programming, and special events were profiled locally in eVent! (supplement to the Daily Courier), SNAP Okanagan, off-centre, YLW Connection, Okanagan Life Magazine, the Capital News, and the Daily Courier. Monthly articles focusing on current and upcoming exhibitions, written by the Gallery’s Curator, Liz Wylie, continued to be published in Kelowna’s Capital News. Full-page advertising in the City’s Recreation & Cultural Services Activity and Program Guide was continued in 2013. Advertising space was also purchased in the Capital News, SNAP Okanagan, and the Daily Courier to provide information about our public programs and special events.

Continued efforts were made to encourage visitors and tourists to visit the Kelowna Art Gallery by participating in local tourism initiatives. The Gallery was featured in Tourism Kelowna’s Official Visitors’ Guide, and was included in listings in several other visitors’ guides. Additionally, the distribution of rack cards through visitor centres, and monthly updates on the Kelowna Cultural District visitor kiosks, provided visitors to the city with up-to-date information on Gallery happenings.

Local television stations supported Gallery activities by covering a variety of exhibitions, programs, and special events in news stories and events calendar listings. CHBC Global Okanagan and the local program go! Okanagan, which airs on Kelowna’s SHAW Cable affiliate, were especially supportive.

Kelowna’s radio stations also spread the word by broadcasting interviews, sound bites, and PSAs. CBC Radio One, AM 1150, Q103 FM, and 103.9 The Juice all offered media coverage in 2013.

The Kelowna Art Gallery continues to connect with members through a monthly e-newsletter, printed Journal newsletter (three times annually) and through invitations to opening receptions, special events or other public programs. The e-newsletter was also sent out to individuals, community partners, and other interested parties who wish to stay connected with the Gallery.

In 2013, social media remained one of the most immediate and effective marketing tools for the Gallery. The Gallery’s Facebook page surpassed the 1000 “Friends” mark, and the network of Twitter followers also climbed to over 3,000.

The Gallery would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the amazing volunteers who continually help to make our fundraising events and opening receptions so successful. Please take a moment to recognize their efforts by reading the names listed in this report on page 20.

INDEPENDENT AUDITORS' REPORT To the Members of the Kelowna Art Gallery Association We have audited the accompanying financial statements of the Kelowna Art Gallery Association (the “Art Gallery”) which comprise the statement of financial position as at December 31, 2013 and the statements of operations, changes in fund balances, and cash flows for the year then ended and notes, comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations, and for such internal control as management determines is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditors' Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform an audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on our judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, we consider internal control relevant to the Art Gallery’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Art Gallery’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Kelowna Art Gallery Association as at December 31, 2013, and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for- profit organizations.

KELOWNA ART GALLERY ASSOCIATION Notes to Financial Statements

Year ended December 31, 2013

The Kelowna Art Gallery Association (the “Art Gallery”) is a charitable, not-for-profit organization, incorporated as a society under the Society Act (British Columbia) and is engaged in providing art exhibitions and education to the public. The Art Gallery is a registered charity under the Income Tax Act and, accordingly, is exempt from income taxes, provided certain requirements of the Income Tax Act are met.

1. Significant accounting policies: These financial statements are prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not for profit organizations. The Society's significant accounting policies are as follows (a) Fund Accounting:

i) Operating fund: The operating fund includes the Art Gallery’s operating and tangible capital assets and principal operations.

ii) Permanent collection fund: The permanent collection fund includes donations and transactions related to the permanent art work collection held by the Art Gallery in trust for the City of Kelowna.

iii) Building reserve fund: The building reserve fund includes donations, fundraising and expenses incurred related to future improvements and expansion to the Art Gallery’s facility.

(b) Revenue recognition: Unrestricted contributions are recognized as revenue of the appropriate fund in the year received or receivable if the amount to be received can be reasonably estimated and collection is reasonably assured. Externally restricted contributions related to general operations are recognized as revenue of the appropriate fund in the year in which the related expenses are incurred. Contributions restricted for the purchase of equipment are deferred and amortized into revenue at a rate corresponding with the amortization rate for the related equipment.

Year ended December 31, 2013

1. Significant accounting policies (continued): (c) Contributed services: Individuals and organizations contribute numerous volunteer hours each year to assist the Art Gallery in carrying out its operations. The Art Gallery also subleases its land and building from the City of Kelowna for annual rent of $1, plus applicable property taxes. Because of the difficulty of determining the fair value, contributed services and business premises rental are not recognized in the financial statements. (d) Cash and cash equivalents: Cash and cash equivalents include cash and instruments readily convertible into cash. (e) Tangible capital assets:

Tangible capital assets purchases are recorded at cost. Amortization is provided on using the following bases and annual rates:

Basis Rate

Computer equipment Declining balance 30% Computer software Straight line 20% Furniture and equipment Declining balance 20% Leasehold improvements Straight line 20%

When the Art Gallery’s management determines that certain tangible capital assets no longer contribute to the Art Gallery’s ability to provide services, the carrying amount of these assets are written down to amortization expense. (f) Permanent collection: The Art Gallery’s permanent collection, ownership of which vests with the residents of the City of Kelowna, is not capitalized. Additions to the collection are expensed in the period in which the item is acquired. Contributions to the collection are reported as revenue and expenses if the fair value can be reasonably determined.

Year ended December 31, 2013

1. Significant accounting policies (continued): (g) Non-monetary donations: i) Donations of art work and cultural property: Donations of art work, other than cultural property art work, are recorded as donations at appraised fair market value once the appraised fair market value is determined and the donation is accepted by the Art Gallery’s Acquisition Committee. Donations of cultural property are recorded as donations at appraised fair market value once the donation is accepted by the Art Gallery’s Acquisition Committee and certified by the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board as cultural property. ii) Contributed services and materials:

Individuals and organizations contribute numerous volunteer hours each year to assist the Art Gallery in carrying out its operations. Because of the difficulty of determining the fair market value of these contributed services and materials and business premises rental, the fair market values are not recognized in the financial statements except where the fair market value can be reasonably estimated. (h) Use of estimates:

The preparation of financial statements requires management to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities and disclosure of contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the year. Actual results could differ from those estimates. (i) Financial instruments: The Art Gallery measures cash and restricted cash at fair value and accounts receivable and accounts payable and accrued liabilities at amortized cost. Changes in fair value of cash and restricted cash are recognized in the statement of operations in the periods in which they arise.

8. Economic dependence: The Art Gallery receives a significant portion of its annual operating grant funding from the City of Kelowna, and operates from a building owned by the City of Kelowna. The Art Gallery operates under a lease and operating agreement with the City, which has a ten-year term (expiring December 31, 2016) with two five year renewal periods at the Art Gallery’s option. The lease and operating agreement provides for total rent of $10 for the initial ten year term.

9. Financial risk and concentration or risk: The Art Gallery is exposed to interest rate risk in respect of the values of its cash, restricted cash and cash equivalents, accounts receivable, accounts payable and accrued liabilities. Unless otherwise disclosed, the Society is not exposed to significant credit risk. The maximum credit risk exposure for all financial assets is the carrying value of the asset.

10. Comparative information: The financial statements have been reclassified, where applicable, to conform to the presentation used in the current year. The changes do not affect prior year earnings.
