    Appendix A Places to Visit and Natural Communities to See There his list of places to visit is arranged by biophysical region. Within biophysical regions, the places are listed more or less north-to-south and by county. This list T includes all the places to visit that are mentioned in the natural community profiles, plus several more to round out an exploration of each biophysical region. The list of natural communities at each site is not exhaustive; only the communities that are especially well-expressed at that site are listed. Most of the natural communities listed are easily accessible at the site, though only rarely will they be indicated on trail maps or brochures. You, the naturalist, will need to do the sleuthing to find out where they are. Use topographic maps and aerial photographs if you can get them. In a few cases you will need to do some serious bushwhacking to find the communities listed. Bring your map and compass, and enjoy!     Provide More Recreation Page: 1 INTRODUCTION This project documents both the existing value and potential of New England’s working forest lands: Value – not only in terms of business opportunities, jobs and income – but also nonfinancial values, such as enhanced wildlife populations, recreation opportunities and a healthful environment. This project of the New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) is aimed at enhancing the contribution the region’s forests can make to sustainability, and is intended to complement other efforts aimed at not only conserving New England’s forests, but also enhancing New England’s agriculture and fisheries. New England’s forests have sustained the six-state region since colonial settlement. They have provided the wood for buildings, fuel to heat them, the fiber for papermaking, the lumber for ships, furniture, boxes and barrels and so much more. As Arizona is defined by its desert landscapes and Iowa by its farms, New England is defined by its forests. These forests provide a wide range of products beyond timber, including maple syrup; balsam fir tips for holiday decorations; paper birch bark for crafts; edibles such as berries, mushrooms and fiddleheads; and curatives made from medicinal plants. They are the home to diverse and abundant wildlife. They are the backdrop for hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing and camping. They also provide other important benefits that we take for granted, including clean air, potable water and carbon storage. In addition to tangible benefits that can be measured in board feet or cords, or miles of hiking trails, forests have been shown to be important to both physical and mental health.

The statements and letters of those submitting written testimony are as follows:] PREPARED STATEMENT OF THE 1854 TREATY AUTHORITY The 1854 Treaty Authority is an inter-tribal natural resource organization which implements the off-reservation hunting, fishing, and gathering rights of the Grand Portage and Bois Forte Bands of the Lake Superior Chippewa in the area ceded to the United States in the Treaty of 1854. Our program is partially funded by a Public Law 93–638 contract with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The 1854 Authority respect- fully requests an increase of $270,000 to our existing base funding in order to meet the increased cost of fulfilling our court-ordered responsibilities. For background purposes, the Grand Portage, Bois Forte, and Fond du Lac Bands are signatories to the Treaty of September 30, 1854, 10 Stat. 1109. In that Treaty the Bands ceded approximately 5,000,000 acres in northeastern Minnesota, reserv- ing the right to hunt, fish, and gather in that territory. For most of the 20th cen- tury, those off-reservation rights lay dormant and unrecognized and tribal subsist- ence activities were relegated to lands within reservation boundaries. In 1985 the Bands went to Federal court seeking a declaratory judgment that the 1854 Treaty did indeed reserve these off-reservation rights and that the State of Minnesota had no authority to regulate tribal hunting, fishing, and gathering in the ceded territory.

The spine of the Green Mountains winds through the town north to south. Butternut Mountain is the highest peak that falls entirely within the town.
