Ems^m^wmy^' B m 13 ^»MMaM««^fc mwrtkimmM LMPOSING DWELLINGS in the Gothic Revival style were among the most dramatic symbols of affluence in mid-nineteenth-century America. With the rise of industrialization in this periods an increasing number of men from humble beginnings attained wealth and prominence. It was impor tant to them as well as to gentlemen of established means that their dwell ings reflect an elevated social standing. The Harral-Wheeler residence in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was an eloquent proclamation of the success of its owners and the excellence of the architect Alexander Jackson Davis. Al though the house no longer stands, one room, a selection of furniture, orig inal architectural designs, architectural fragments, and other supporting drawings and photographs are now in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution. These remnants of Bridgeport's Gothic "ornament" serve as the basis for this study. From this we might assume that Eastman, and perhaps Chapman, may have consulted a wartime pho- tograph. His antebellum Sumter is highly idealized, drawn perhaps from an as-yet unidentified print, or extrapolated from maps and plans of the fort—child’s play for a master topographer like Eastman. Coastal Defenses The forts painted by Eastman had once been the state of the art, before rifled artillery rendered masonry Fig. 11. Seth Eastman, Fort Sumter, South Carolina, After the War, 1870–1875. obsolete, as in the bombardment of Fort Sumter in 1861 and the capture of Fort Pulaski one year later. By 1867, when the construction of new Third System fortifications ceased, more than 40 citadels defended Amer- ican coastal waters.12 Most of East- man’s forts were constructed under the Third System, but few of them saw action during the Civil War. A number served as military prisons. As commandant of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware River from November 1864 to August 1865, Col. Eastman would have visited Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island, located in the river channel between Wilmington and New Castle, Delaware. Channel-dredging had dumped tons of spoil at the northern end of the island, land upon which a miserable prison-pen housed enlisted Confederate pris- oners of war. Their officers were Fig. 12. Bachmann, John: NEW YORK CITY HALL, PARK AND ENVIRONS. New York. [ca. 1849]. Tinted lithograph with additional hand-coloring, 13½ x 18¼ inches. Mild foxing. Very good. Matted and framed. An attractive view of Broadway, New York City by famed artist John Bachmann who was, at the time, only at the beginning of a brilliant printmaking career. According to Reps, Bachmann executed two views of New York City in 1849, though Reps does not record this one. Here, Bachmann portrays Broadway in a clean and very inviting manner. “Along the broad thoroughfare moves a smart array of carriages, coaches, and fashionably-dressed pedestrians. The fountain playing in the imperfect triangle of City Hall Park had now permanently replaced the temporary one erected there during the Croton Water Celebration that took place there in 1842. Beyond the fountain is City Hall itself, admired by residents and visitors alike for its architectural splendor: a successful adaptation of French Renaissance and American colonial influences” – Deák. Bachmann’s reputation as a fine artist, lithographer, and printer is assured through his work, even if only considering his New York City views. Little is known of the man himself, though he is believed to have emigrated from Germany in the 1840s, bringing with him a fully-developed style and competence unusual for the period. “No finer artist of city views worked in America than John Bachmann” – Reps. -

THE PARISH-ROSSEEL COLLECTION Mss. Coll. No. 5 38 linear ft. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE David Parish (1778-1826) arrived in America in late 1805. The owner of a successful banking and commission house in Antwerp, he came to this country as the American based partner in a profitable enterprise of shipping bullion from Spanish America to Europe. He directed this business from Philadelphia where he made a fortune estimated at one million dollars. Upon his arrival in America, David Parish visited Gouverneur Morris who had been a friend of David's father when Morris was United States Minister to France. In the spring of 1807, Morris visited Parish and told him of vast lands in northern New York and suggested that they would be a good investment. In the spring of 1808, with Joseph Rosseel as his land agent, David Parish began purchasing land in the North Country. One of his first purchases was 72,000 acres at one dollar and fifty cents per acre. He later added to this by purchasing large tracts of Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties. In 1804 there were only four families living in Ogdensburg. In 1809 David Parish bought the unsold portion (only thirty eight lots had been sold) of the village from Samuel Ogden for eight thousand dollars. Parish saw the possibility of turning Ogdensburg into a main forwarding station on the St. Lawrence River and he made efforts to create a large commercial center there. As a result of hard work on the part of Parish and Rosseel, the town grew considerably in the years before the War of 1812. -

C. 20240 4?C ■ !U 5 NY, i ' HISTORIC AMERICAN BUILDINGS SURVEY MONTGOMERY PLACE MANSION HABS No. NY-5625 Location: Annandale Road, Barrytown vicinity Dutchess County, New York Present Owner Delafield Mansion Corporation Present Use; Residence Significance: Dramatically situated along the Hudson River, Montgomery Place was a showplace during the nineteenth century, widely known for its richly ornamented Federal house and extensive pleasure grounds. The original house with its delicate interior details was built in 1802 for Janet Livingston Montgomery, widow of General Richard Montgomery. The house was enlarged "by the well-known architect, Alexander Jackson Davis, who added an elaborate portico and complex decorative scheme to the exterior. Montgomery Place is one of twenty-one contiguous estates along the east bank of the Hudson between Staatsburg and Tivoli, New York. The land, originally part of the Beekman patent and then the Living- ston estate, Clermont, was given to Janet Livingston Mont- gomery by her parents, Judge Robert and Margaret Beekman Livingston.
