Apart from the well-documented non volant mammal community in the region, the bat fauna still poorly recorded. The aim of this study was to record the bat species of Juruena National Park, northern Mato Grosso, Brazil. Nineteen sites were sampled using mist-nets placed at ground level and near potential bat roosts. We collected 115 individuals belonging to 35 species and five families, which increased the number of species known for Mato Grosso´s Amazon from 86 to 91. The five new records were: Peropteryx kappleri, Peropteryx leucoptera, Lonchorhina inusitata, Tonatia saurophila, and Artibeus concolor. -

Abstract Protecting Nature in Federal Systems: States, Private Interests, and Conservation Units in Brazil by Benjamin Stewart Allen Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Berkeley Assistant Professor Alison E. Post, Co-Chair Professor Ruth B. Collier, Co-Chair This research addresses the decentralization of policy making. Much of the literature argues that decentralization is more efficient because local policy makers are more responsive to local demands than are national policy makers. However, I find that centralization often provides greater environmental policy effectiveness. While both national and subnational tiers of government must weigh economic growth against environmental goals, the balance of these conflicting goals is different for subnational than for national governments. Through an empirical analysis of the location, type, and degree of implementation of federal and state conservation units (unidades de conservação, or UC) in Brazil, I argue that political incentives to establish more or less strict types of conservation units differ across levels of government due to the character and political influence of local economic interests. Two key variables explain variation in conservation unit types: the tier of government – national or subnational – enacting a conservation unit, and the type of industry present where a conservation unit is proposed, as well as the importance of that industry in the economy of the state. -

The initiative’s starting goal was to Arpa, a superlative program create new Protected Areas (PAs) and consolidate existing ones in the Brazilian Amazon to extend protection to 50 million hectares. This target was then raised to 60 million hectares, 15% of the Brazilian T he Brazilian Amazon is the world’s largest tropical forest, spanning Amazon, a surface area twice the size of Germany. 4.1 million square kilometers. Though the Amazon straddles nine countries (totaling 7.5 million square kilometers), 60% of its total accounts for roughly 40% of Brazil’s national territory. Everything about the biome is superlative: it holds the world’s largest drainage basin, the most substantial concentration of the planet’s biodiversity— 10% of all known species— landscapes that range from rainforest to pockets of Cerrado (the Brazilian savanna), and a whole gamut of ethnicities and peoples, including indigenous peoples, quilombolas, extractives settlers and riverine communities. The Brazilian Amazon is home to more than 25 million people. All this plurality is supported by the Amazon Region Protected Areas Program - ARPA. Launched in 2002 by the Brazilian Government and coordinated by the Ministry of the Environment, it has the backing of 2 3rd GEF-7 Replenishment Meeting – Brasília, Brazil January 23-25, 2018 The program reached its goal in 2017, the year in which ARPA, the Funbio - The Brazilian Biodiversity Fund - manages ARPA’s financial world’s largest tropical-forest protection initiative, celebrated its 15th resources, all PA-related procurement and contracts, and the anniversary, further proof of the efficacy of its management model. -
