The Apartheid Divide
PUNC XI: EYE OF THE STORM 2018 The Apartheid Divide Sponsored by: Presented by: Table of Contents Letter from the Crisis Director Page 2 Letter from the Chair Page 4 Committee History Page 6 Delegate Positions Page 8 Committee Structure Page 11 1 Letter From the Crisis Director Hello, and welcome to The Apartheid Divide! My name is Allison Brown and I will be your Crisis Director for this committee. I am a sophomore majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a focus in Biochemicals. This is my second time being a Crisis Director, and my fourth time staffing a conference. I have been participating in Model United Nations conferences since high school and have continued doing so ever since I arrived at Penn State. Participating in the Penn State International Affairs and Debate Association has helped to shape my college experience. Even though I am an engineering major, I am passionate about current events, politics, and international relations. This club has allowed me to keep up with my passion, while also keeping with my other passion; biology. I really enjoy being a Crisis Director and I am so excited to do it again! This committee is going to focus on a very serious topic from our world’s past; Apartheid. The members of the Presidents Council during this time were quite the collection of people. It is important during the course of this conference that you remember to be respectful to other delegates (both in and out of character) and to be thoughtful before making decisions or speeches. If you ever feel uncomfortable, please inform myself or the chair, Sneha, and we will address the issue. -

They, in very many ways, act as a centralising force – unifying the tentative, hesitant and emerging ideas into a single penetrating thought. Neville Alexander as a person, and his writings as a body of thought, do both these things with strength, vision and courage. The single thrust that runs through much of Neville Alexander’s writings is the dynamic relationship he perceives between the national struggle for liberation in South Africa and the future political vision. -
Cry Freedom Essay
L.B. History Period 7 Feb. 2003 Cry Freedom; Accurate? Have you ever seen a movie based on a true story and wondered if it was truly and completely accurate? Many movies and books documenting historical lives and events have twisted plots to make the story more interesting. The movie Cry Freedom, directed by Richard Attenborough, is not one of these movies; it demonstrates apartheid in South Africa accurately through the events in the lives of both Steve Biko and Donald Woods. Cry Freedom has a direct relation to black history month, and has been an influence to me in my feelings about racism and how it is viewed and dealt with today. Cry Freedom was successful in its quest to depict Steve Biko, Donald Woods, and other important characters as they were in real life. Steve Biko was a man who believed in justice and equality for all races and cultures. The important points in his life such as his banning (1973), his famous speeches and acts to influence Africans, the trial (convicting the nine other black consciousness leaders) in which he took part, his imprisoning and ultimately his death were documented in Cry Freedom, and they were documented accurately. Steve Biko was banned by the South African Apartheid government in 1973. Biko was restricted to his home in Kings William's Town in the Eastern Cape and could only converse with one person at a time, not including his family (The History Net, African History http://africanhistory.about.com/library/biographies/blbio-stevebiko.htm). In the movie, this is shown when Biko first meets Donald Woods where he explains his banning situation. -

“Knowing Is Seeing”: the Digital Audio Workstation and the Visualization of Sound
“KNOWING IS SEEING”: THE DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION AND THE VISUALIZATION OF SOUND IAN MACCHIUSI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2017 © Ian Macchiusi, 2017 ii Abstract The computer’s visual representation of sound has revolutionized the creation of music through the interface of the Digital Audio Workstation software (DAW). With the rise of DAW- based composition in popular music styles, many artists’ sole experience of musical creation is through the computer screen. I assert that the particular sonic visualizations of the DAW propagate certain assumptions about music, influencing aesthetics and adding new visually- based parameters to the creative process. I believe many of these new parameters are greatly indebted to the visual structures, interactional dictates and standardizations (such as the office metaphor depicted by operating systems such as Apple’s OS and Microsoft’s Windows) of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Whether manipulating text, video or audio, a user’s interaction with the GUI is usually structured in the same manner—clicking on windows, icons and menus with a mouse-driven cursor. Focussing on the dialogs from the Reddit communities of Making hip-hop and EDM production, DAW user manuals, as well as interface design guidebooks, this dissertation will address the ways these visualizations and methods of working affect the workflow, composition style and musical conceptions of DAW-based producers. iii Dedication To Ba, Dadas and Mary, for all your love and support. iv Table of Contents Abstract .................................................................................................................. -
