Joseph Conrad Joseph Conrad (born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, Joseph Conrad Polish: [ˈjuzɛf tɛˈɔdɔr ˈkɔnrat kɔʐɛˈɲɔfskʲi] ( listen); 3 December 1857 – 3 August 1924) was a Polish-British writer[1][note 1] regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language.[2] Though he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature.[note 2] Conrad wrote stories and novels, many with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of what he saw as an impassive, inscrutable universe.[note 3] Conrad is considered an early modernist,[note 4] though his works contain elements of 19th-century realism.[3] His narrative style and anti-heroic characters[4] have influenced numerous authors, and many films have been adapted from, or inspired by, his works. McCONNELL B.A. University of British Columbia, 1954 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of The Requirements for the Degree of M.A. in the Department of ENGLISH We accept this thesis as conforming to the required standard THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April, 1958. ii ABSTRACT' Central in the work of Joseph Conrad is the theme of isolation, of the loneliness of man> arid of alienation from one's own kind, a theme which, in some form, dominates the work of many modern writers and thinkers. A study of the criticism of Conrad shows that this preoccupation with the isolated man has always been noticed and was early linked to Conrad's own position in the world ,as .an exile. Recent critics have delved more deeply into the subject, and have shown its relationship to the threatened break-up of society seen in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and have declared Conrad a forerunner of such modern authors, as G-ide, Eliot, Kafka, Malraux, among: others, in whose work the "exile" of man is. also a central thought. While- many critics have touched .upon this aspe.c.t of C.onrad's writings, I have felt that the theme is so central to Conrad's total outlook on life that a fuller analysis of this question was necessary for' an adequate appreciation and understanding of his writing. This thesis, then, is an endeavour to explore more fully the theme of isolation in C.onrad's books, to try to distinguish the various types of isolation he deals with and their- causes, and to link with this central theme the other beliefs—moral, political, and social—disclosed by Conrad in his work. -

Troubled Waters: Fanny Durack’s 1919 Swimming Tour of America Amid Transnational Amateur Athletic Prudery and Bureaucracy John A. Lucas* and Ian Jobling rom 1910 through 1918, Sarah (“Fanny”) Durack (1889-1956) of Sydney, F Australia, was the world’s greatest female swimmer of all distances from the free-style sprints to the mile marathon. She was the Olympic gold medallist at the Stockholm Games of 1912, and amidst the ghastly days of the Great World War, she and her Olympic champion companion, Wilhehnina (“Mina”) Wylie, tried to arrange a “barnstorm” cross-the-United States swim tour. But “barnstorm” is an inappropriate word to use about young, unmarried, female athletes travelling unescorted in a foreign land for an extended time. In this Edwardian era, proper young women needed a chaperone or lady attendant. Fanny and Mina attempted to travel to America in 1916 and 1918, without accompaniment. Their efforts to swim in the USA were denied and they had to wait until 1919 ... a trip across the country by these two young Australians filled with new experiences, including acrimony, bureaucracy, confusion, prudery, as well as some memorable swimming performances. This paper is an effort to recreate the events leading up to those five weeks in America, to look carefully at certain dimensions of the cultural ethos of the United States of America and Australia, and the concept and administration of “amateurism” that touched the lives of the two women, especially Fanny Durack. The American Amateur Athletic Union of the United States (AAU), created in 1888, was, by the second decade of the twentieth century, the largest organisation of its kind in the wor1d.l By far the central figure within the AAU during these years was the Irish-American publisher, author, and professional guardian of amateur athletics, James Edward Sullivan (1860-1914).2 Headquarters of the AAU was New York City. -

As the premier touring musical representative for the United States FArmy, this internationally-acclaimed organization travels thousands of miles each year presenting a variety of music to enthusiastic audiences throughout the nation and abroad. Through these concerts, the Field Band keeps the will of the American people behind the members of the armed forces and supports diplomatic efforts around the world. The Concert Band is the oldest and largest of the Field Band’s four performing components. This elite 65-member instrumental ensemble, founded in 1946, has performed in all 50 states and 25 foreign countries for audiences totaling more than 100 million. Tours have taken the band throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Far East, and India. The group appears in a wide variety of settings, from world-famous concert halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonie and Carnegie Hall, to state fairgrounds and high school gymnasiums. The Concert Band regularly travels and performs with the Soldiers’ Chorus, together presenting a powerful and diverse program of marches, overtures, popular music, patriotic selections, and instrumental and vocal solos. The organization has also performed joint concerts with many of the nation’s lead- ing orchestras, including the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The United States Army Field Band is considered by music critics to be one of the most versatile and inspiring musical organizations in the world. -

M. de Lange May 2004 Potchefstroom .'(:,",: " 1 --- Josech Conrad at 54 JOSEPH CONRAD: SITUATING IDENTITY IN A POSTCOLONIAL SPACE This thesis is premised on the notion, drawn mainly from a postcolonial perspective (which is subsumed under the poststructuralist as well as the postmodern), that Conrad's early writing reflects his abiding concern with how people construct their identities vis-a-vis the otherlother in contact zones on the periphery of empire far from the reach of social, racial and national identities that sustain them at home. It sets out to explore the problematic of race, culture, gender and identity in a selection of the writer's early works set mainly, but not exclusively, in the East, using the theoretical perspective of postcoloniality as a point of entry, nuanced by the configurations of spatiality which are factored into discourses about the otherlother. Predicated mainly on the theoretical constructs about culture and identity espoused by Homi Bhabha, Edward Said and Stuart Hall, this study proposes the idea of an in- between "third space" for the interrogation of identity in Conrad's work. This postcolonial space, the central contribution of this thesis, frees his writings from the stranglehold of the Manichean paradigm in terms of which alterity or otherness is perceived. Based on the hypothesis that identities are never fixed but constantly in a state of performance, this project underwrites postcoloniality as a viable theoretical mode of intervention in Conrad's early works.
