Herzog and Kirsten Jensen Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and the Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas, USA Abstract: A new lecanicephalidean genus is erected for cestodes previously recognised as “New Genus 12” (Polypocephalidae) in a phylogenetic analysis of the interrelationship of members of this order. Examination of the cestode fauna of the mangrove whipray, Urogymnus granulatus (Macleay) (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Solomon Islands and northern Australia revealed the existence of specimens representing two new species, consistent in morphology with “New Genus 12.” Corollapex gen. n. is unique among the 24 valid lecanicephalidean genera in its possession of an apical organ in the form of an external retractable central disk surrounded by eight concave muscular, membrane-bound pads and an internal heterogeneous glandular component. The two new spe- cies described herein, Corollapex cairae sp. n. (type species) and Corollapex tingoi sp. n., differ from one another in overall size and number of mature and immature proglottids, and are noted to demonstrate a differential distribution between mature and juvenile host individuals. Additional species diversity in the new genus, beyond C. cairae sp. n., C. tingoi sp. n., and “New Genus 12 n. sp. 1” of Jensen et al. (2016) is suggested. Corollapex gen. n. appears to be restricted to dasyatid hosts in the Indo-West Pacific region. -

Compagno iagnostic characters: Small to very large batoids (adults between 40 and 500 cm total length, and D18 to at least 192 cm disc width) with large, oval, circular, or rhomboidal discs, and moderately stout to slender, more or less elongated, whip-like tails mostly longer than disc length. Body usually with denticles, thorns, and tubercles on the dorsal surface of disc and tail; their size, density and distribution varies with growth, sex, and species. Trunk depressed and flattened, not shark-like. Tail moderately depressed or cylindrical, without lateral folds on sides, abruptly narrower than trunk; usually 1 to 4 prominent barbed stings (stinger or stinging spine) on dorsal surface of tail well behind pelvic fins (absent or vestigial in Urogymnus, and often cut or broken off captured individuals by fishers to protect themselves); no electric organs in tail. Head forming part of disc, broad and depressed, not greatly elevated; snout short or moderately elongated (mostly less than 6 times orbit diameter but more than 6 times in long-snouted and small-eyed species in the area), broadly angular to rounded at tip; snout without a rostral cartilage, entirely supported by pectoral fin skeleton; not formed into a rostral saw and without lateral saw teeth. Five small gill openings on underside of front half of pectoral disc, not visible in lateral view; no gill sieves or rakers on internal gill slits. Eyes dorsolateral on head and just anteromedial to spiracles, usually moderately large but small in a few species in the area. -

Vasudevan Manas Manjrekar Neenu Somraj Virendra Tiwari Mangrove and Marine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation of Maharashtra Introduction: The Elasmobranchs, represented by sharks, sawfishes, skates, rays and chimaeras (Rat fishes) are an important group of demersal fishes. These fishes have a skeleton made of cartilage, instead of bone. The members of this group are characterised by having five to seven pairs of gill clefts opening individually to the exterior, rigid dorsal fins, small placoid scales embedded in the skin (sharks) or naked (rays). The teeth are in several series and the details of jaw anatomy vary between species which are useful in differentiating the Elasmobranch species. Their distribution ranges from nearshore regions to the deep oceanic waters. Some species are known to travel long distances, hence can be considered as highly migratory. Their stock can be found in more than one Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). They are widely distributed in the Oceans but are most diverse in the tropical and subtropical Indo- Pacific Ocean (Bonfil, 2002). Elasmobranchs species diversity in Indian seas is higher than that reported in many other tropical Indian Ocean countries like Sri lanka, Arabian Gulf, Maldives and Thailand (Akhilesh K. V et al. 2014). However, higher numbers have been reported from Indonesia (White et al., 2006; Fahmi, 2010). Chondrichthyans are one of the most vulnerable groups due to their biological characteristics such as slow growth rate, delayed maturation, long reproduction cycles and low fecundity. -

The main objective of Malaysia NPOA-Shark is to ensure the conservation and management of shark and their long-term sustainable use. For the purpose of this document, the term ‘shark’ refers to all chondrichthyan or cartilaginous fishes, comprising sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras. This management plan will provide a national guideline for managers and interested stakeholders on how to incorporate the conservation and management issues of sharks and rays into the overall management of fisheries resources. -

Introduction The coastline of Mozambique is 2,770 km long and has a total Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) size of just under 572,000 km2. This document lists all marine species known to be found in this area that are listed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable to extinction, Endangered or Critically Endangered – collectively known as “threatened species”. It further provides details of how these species are protected under Mozambican law and international wildlife conventions.
