ISSN(Online): 2319-8753 ISSN (Print): 2347-6710 International Journal of Innovative Research in Science, Engineering and Technology (An ISO 3297: 2007 Certified Organization) Website: www.ijirset.com Vol. 6, Issue 3, March 2017 Predicting the Water Quality of Kodaikanal Lake Using Genetic Programming P.Kishorekumar [1], Dr.T.Velrajan [2] PG Scholar, Environmental Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering , Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, India Professor, Department of Civil Engineering , Thiagarajar College of Engineering , Madurai, India ABSTRACT: Lake has been an important surface water source from ages but since the past two centuries the quality of lake water has been altered drastically and undoubtedly human intervention has been the primary cause for the deterioration. With alteration in lake water quality the water scarcity issues have increased quite considerably. So, keeping in view the urgency to restore lake this study has been initiated. Since lakes are vast water bodies physical analysis of every parameter is practically complex hence modeling studies are adopted using Genetic Programming (GP) tool, which is based on Darwin‟s theory of survival of fittest. This paper predicts the water quality parameters and the stimulation model was developed which was based upon the testing of data using the tool Genetic Programming. KEYWORDS: Genetic programming, lake water sampling, physico-chemical and ecological role. I.INTRODUCTION Lakes are an important feature of the Earth's landscape. They are extremely valuable ecosystems and provide a range of goods and services to humankind .The lakes and reservoirs, all over the country without exception, are in varying degrees of environmental degradation which is due to encroachments eutrophication (from domestic and industrial effluents) and silt.

P., Somashekar. R. K., Prakash. K. L. Department of Environmental Sciences, Bangalore University, Bangalore- 560 056. *Corresponding author: [email protected] Received 01July, 2009; Revised 28 February, 2010 ABSTRACT Cauvery River is the major river system of south India was studied for 19 prime physico- chemical and 2 bacteriological parameters at six locations of the Kollegal stretch, for a period of Two years (2006–2008) at monthly intervals. Over the years of time, river has been subjected to human interference regularly and water quality was to be getting deteriorated profoundly. Major anthropogenic activities practiced in and around the stretch: agriculture, abstraction of water for irrigation and drinking, washing cloths and utensils, discharging of sewage waste, sand dredging, boating, fishing, open defecation and religious ritual activities along the stretch were generating serious threat to the biota of the river by altering the physicochemical and biological concentration of the river system. The seasonal and yearly trends were discussed to comprehend anthropogenic interferences on the river stretch. Correlation analysis was also been tried in between physico-chemical parameters. The pH, Conductance, Alkalinity and Hardness levels indicate the moderate quality of water. The values of DO, BOD and COD levels indicate the absence of major organic pollution sources. Seasonal and yearly averages of plant nutrients like phosphate, nitrates, potassium and also sulphates at drain out falls and mixing zones, were not showing any significant variation in their concentration indicate no sign of problems like eutrophication, which is generally raise due to agricultural and sewage wastes.

  • Environment and Forests Department
Environment and Forests Department Policy Note 2008 – 2009 Demand No. 15 Forest Department 1. Introduction Forests play an important role in the conservation of natural resources. Forests contribute significantly towards environmental upkeep, climatic balance and are mainly instrumental for the rainfall patterns. They are the source of rivers ensuring livelihood security for innumerable people who are dependent on them and also perform other vital functions such as providing protection from natural disasters, in the form of shelter belt plantations. They are the treasure chests of bio- diversity and home to most of world's vast array of life forms offering needed habitat for wildlife and wide diversity of medicinal plants while also ensuring livelihood support to the tribals living within the forest areas. Forests also prevent soil erosion besides serving as a foster mother for agriculture. Concerns about greenhouse gases, declining agricultural productivity and decreasing water availability and increasing pollution levels make forests more important than ever before. 2. Forest cover and green cover The National Forest Policy has mandated that 33% of the land area should be under forest cover. This is however different in the different States because of the variations noticed in levels of urbanization and industrial growth. However in the present scenario it is increasingly important that every State takes efforts to increase the green cover. Besides an increase in forest cover, encouraging tree cultivation outside forests can result in increased green cover. Tamil Nadu has been able to record landmark achievements in green cover increase, by increasing the forest cover and tree cover. The State of Forest Report published two months before has brought out the fact that in India, the forest cover has reduced by 728 sq.

It is one of the South India’s finest Hills Station and it is also called the, The Switzerland of the East, The Emerald Set of South , The Chilled Paradise among the Hills, The ‘Princess of the Hills’ and so on. Kodai is situated at an altitude of about 2,133-m high and covers an area of 21.45-sq-km. Kodaikanal Lake, also known as Kodai Lake is a manmade lake located in the Kodaikanal city in Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, India. The lake is star-shaped, centrally located in the town of Kodaikanal and is surrounded by lush green hills of the northwestern Palani Hills range, which is the main watershed for the lake. On the basis of various studies carried out, 62 lakes including the Kodaikanal Lake in Tamil Nadu have been identified as polluted and degraded requiring conservation. (Seth,S.M). Therefore this paper proposes to identify the various types of water pollution at kodaikanal and also it attempts to find out the causes for the same and provides suggestion for reducing the water pollution at kodaikanal. Introduction Over two thirds of earth’s surface is covered by water, less than a third is taken up by land.
