E-Prospectus 1 | P a g e CONFEDERATION OF INDIAN UNIVERSITIES (Established and Inaugurated on 15 April 2004 as a National Umbrella of all Indian Universities) Headquarters : A 42-43, Paryavaran Complex, South of Saket, New Delhi – 110030 Campaign for conducting 3100+ Online Certificate level Courses for upgrading the knowledge of qualified persons contemplating to undergo specialized training to enrich themselves with value added e-learning materials INTRODUCTION The Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU) was conceived by the then Member of Planning Commission, Government of India Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian and endorsed by the then Prime Minister Hon’ble Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 17 August 2002 during the release of the Book containing the poems of Hon’ble Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee translated in Tamil by Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian. The original poems in Hindi were translated in English by Dr. Priya Ranjan Trivedi and then further translated in Tamil by Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian. Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian, Member of the Planning Commission of India releasing the Vision Document of the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU) after inaugurating the CIU at India International Centre, New Delhi on 15 April 2004 under the Presidentship of Dr. Priya Ranjan Trivedi 2 | P a g e It took almost 20 months in designing the action plans to be implemented by the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU) by also analyzing the aims, objectives and activities of the UGC and the AIU. It was also decided by Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian, the then Member of the Planning Commission, Government of India specially in charge of Human Resource Development that CIU will design and implement programmes and activities not covered by the UGC and the AIU. Accordingly the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU) was inaugurated by Dr. K. Venkatasubramanian on behalf of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 15 April 2004 at India International Centre, New Delhi. The CIU is grateful to the then Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Hon’ble Shri K.C. Pant who had guided in drafting the aims, objectives, activities and charter of the CIU. April 2004 : The Honorable Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee meeting the CIU President Dr. Priyaranjan Trivedi after receiving the Vision Document released during the inauguration of CIU on 15/4/2004 During the past 16 years, CIU has brought out more than 500 publications in the form of Books, Encyclopaedias and Occasional Monographs after analysing the latest developments in different areas of arts, science, technology, commerce, management, juridical sciences, environment, pollution control, disaster mitigation, sustainable development, bioinformatics, geo-informatics, intellectual property rights, green business, green technology, employment generation, skill development, spirituality, divinity, humanity, morality, ethics, peace, mercy, tolerance, biotechnology, insurance business, nanotechnology, medical and paramedical sciences, yoga, naturopathy etc. The CIU keeps on giving suggestions to more than 1100+ Central and State Universities besides the Institutions of National Importance, Deemed Universities and Privately Funded Universities legislated under the respective State Legislatures. The CIU also keeps on collecting information regarding all the 1100+ Universities including Central, State, Private and Deemed Universities besides the Institutes of National Importance notified by the Government of India with a view to publishing the same and 3 | P a g e uploading the required information (compiled as The Indian Universities Directory every year) on the websites of CIU (universityindia.edu / ciu.ind.in). The difference between the information compiled by AIU and by CIU is that AIU does not provide detailed information regarding all the 1100+ Universities, rather AIU provides detailed information regarding their Member Universities only. Again the UGC while preparing the Consolidated List of Universities does not include the Institutes of National Importance in this list although the Institutes of National Importance like the IITs also have the right to confer Degrees. That is why the Universities and other Institutions refer to The Indian Universities Directory brought out by CIU regularly as the entire information of all Degree granting institutions is available in this publication. In order to upgrade and refresh the knowledge of individuals contemplating to acquire expert knowledge in the specialized areas, the Confederation of Indian Universities (CIU) as designed and launched more than 3100 Online Certificate level courses of three months duration in the areas of arts, science, commerce, law, management, commerce, agriculture, engineering, technology, medical and para-medical sciences, yoga, naturopathy, ecology, environment, sustainable development, disaster mitigation, diplomacy, international relations, interfaith studies, intellectual property rights, total quality management, bioinformatics, geo-informatics, green business, biotechnology, nanotechnology, green technology, peace, disarmament, mercy, tolerance, ethics, metaphysics, culture, wisdom, feminism, human rights, pollution control, natural resources conservation, insurance business, behavioural science, entrepreneurship, materials management, real estate management, green buildings, employability, women’s studies, research methodology, cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation etc. SALIENT FEATURES OF THE 3 MONTHS ONLINE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES The salient feature of the 3 months Online Certificate Courses is that the entire user friendly study materials are provided at the time of admission. Chapter Alternative Medicine: A Recent Overview Salima Akter, Mohammad Nazmul Hasan, Begum Rokeya, Hajara Akhter, Mohammad Shamim Gazi, Farah Sabrin and Sung Soo Kim Abstract Alternative medicine has renewed its growing public interest in recent times due to inequality of patients and healthcare professionals’ ratios with increased work- load for the latter, various side effects of modern medicine, lack of complete remis- sion from chronic diseases, high cost of new drugs, and emerging new diseases. Hence, people have become more dependent on treatment systems replying on alternative medicine or herbal medicine from traditional medicinal practitioners. Alternative medicine has grown substantially over time and encompasses several millennia of therapeutic systems. The significant areas of alternative medicine include mind–body therapies, body manipulation, and the therapies based on biological systems. Natural products based biological treatment is the most popular of them as nature has endowed us with abundance of effective pharmacologically active phytochemicals. These phytochemicals possess numerous specific clinical health benefits including antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, anti-infectious and analgesic effects. In addition, alternative medicine is easily accessible, affordable, most often noninvasive, and provides favorable benefits during terminal periods of some diseases. However, due to the lack of well-designed clinical trials, the safety and effectiveness of many alternative medicines/therapies remains elusive. This chapter will critically discuss major areas, uses, safety and regulation, current challenges & future perspectives of alternative medicine. Keywords: alternative medicine, health benefit, safety & regulation, challenges & future perspective of AM 1. Introduction Alternative medicine (AM) is a holistic approach recognized as a heterogeneous set of medicinal products and practices with potent healing effects.

As they reported online December 8th, 2015 in Molecular Psychiatry, the team looked at 23,748 individuals with ASD and nearly 209,000 unaffected individuals, all born in Sweden between 1984 and 2007. The group found that ASD was 59 percent more prevalent in children born to women with PCOS a relationship that was independent of PCOS complications such as increased neonatal distress or C-section delivery. The apparent PCOS link may seem odd at first glance. But, it fits with a theory for autism development that centers on androgens–male sex hormones. Many researchers suspect conditions that boost androgen levels or otherwise upset hormone balance during pregnancy may alter fetal brain formation in ways that contribute to social deficits, delayed language and other autism–associated symptoms later in life. The diagram is showing the break in the hormonal layers in the brain. Although ASD is five times more common in boys than in girls, babies born to mothers with PCOS in the study had the same risk regardless of the sex of the child.
