A Case of Engaged Scholarship
Building Engaged Scholarship in Canada 107 Ukrainian Language Education Network: a Case of Engaged Scholarship Alla Nedashkivska and Olenka Bilash ABSTRACT The study explores one longitudinal case of engaged scholarship, the collaborative practices in the Ukrainian language educational network from the 1970s to the present. The focus is on the Ukrainian Language Education Centre (ULEC) at the University of Alberta, which over almost four decades has worked with the community in the development of Ukrainian education by keeping approaches to language learning and its use on the cutting edge of practice. Over the years, ULEC engaged with the community seeking to respond to the community’s needs. Past and present practices of ULEC and its partners are studied through the prism of the engaged scholarship framework (Boyer, 1996; Barker, 2004; Sandmann 2008, 2009). These practices are analyzed through three strands of engagement: purposes, processes, and products, which are defined, explored, and discussed. The study also describes engaged scholarship projects related to Ukrainian language education currently being conducted by ULEC, with a focus on collaboration with communities in the production of knowledge and their potential for strengthening a network of reciprocity. Specifically, the study focuses on activities of the Ukrainian Language Education Centre (ULEC), housed in the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) at the University of Alberta, from past and present perspectives through the prism of the ES framework (Boyer, 1996; Barker, 2004; Sandmann 2008, 2009). -

Briefing Note #2 Changes in Migration: Economic and Municipal Implications Highlights The demographic composition of migration is changing in Alberta and Calgary. International migration is increasing due legislative changes while domestic migration is decreasing due to recent changes in property values in Calgary and Alberta. Combined this means more younger people coming, fewer experienced people coming and many more people choosing to retire in Calgary and area. Implications are significant for the Calgary economy and municipal services. Ex- pect the following changes: Up: • Demand for primary and secondary schools. • Average age of the Calgary population. • Demand for apartments and affordable housing, • Demand for Transit service. • Demand for seniors’ recreation, parks, pathways, and organized sports. • Need for interment facilities. • Demand for health care facilities and services Down: • Unemployment rate. • Average household income. • Per capita property tax revenues. The Ministry is to be commended for seizing this opportunity to engage in what are sometimes difficult conversations as we look for better ways to use the available resources to achieve the goals outlined in The Saskatchewan Plan for Growth and the Education Strategic Sector Plan (ESSP). As we review the options presented by Mr. Perrins and consider the implications for students, teachers and communities, our first priority remains the students of Lloydminster and our capacity to move forward with a focus on the goals established in the Education Strategic Sector Plan (ESSP). -

Resilient Resistance: Understanding the Construction of Positive Ethnocultural Identity in Visible Minority Youth by Elizabeth Shen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Administration and Leadership Department of Educational Policy Studies University of Alberta © Elizabeth Shen, 2018 ii Abstract Visible minority youth face racism daily at micro, mezzo and macro-levels and yet there is a gap in academic research that examines how these students can combat racism, as they experience it at the micro-level, in order to develop pride toward their minority culture and race. As such, this dissertation explores how visible minority youth, who are living within a dominant culture environment where all levels of racism exist to encourage their assimilation, are able to express positive ethnocultural identity. In doing so, this dissertation seeks to answer the question of: How do visible minority youth build positive personal ethnocultural identity? with the corresponding question of: How do visible minority students externally express ethnocultural identity? Using case study methodology within two schools in the province of Alberta, visible minority adolescent students were interviewed and data were analyzed to gain insight into the various strategies that junior high school (grades 7, 8 and 9) students use to express their ethnocultural identity. If you do not see the name of where you live on this list go to the location closest to you, or contact 811 to learn about options closer to home. Accessing medical care and treatment is available even if there is no apparent injury. Most sexual assaults do not result in visible injuries. Accessing medical care can connect people who have been sexually assaulted to appropriate testing and referrals, such as to sexual assault centres, but it is a personal choice to decide to access medical services. Oil Charge Migration in the Peace River Oil Sands and Surrounding Region Jennifer Adams1*, Steve Larter1, Barry Bennett1, Haiping Huang1 1PRG, Department of Geosciences, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 1N4, Canada *now at ConocoPhillips, 600 N Dairy Ashford, Houston, TX, 77041, USA; [email protected] Summary The oil source and alteration history of the Lower Cretaceous and underlying Mesozoic and Late Paleozoic reservoired oil fields of north-central Alberta (Peace River Arch area) were investigated using a very large database of public and in-house data, to produce the first high resolution model of oil- charge systematics for the oil sands. Bulk chemistry and stable isotopic analysis of oils, in combination with quantitative analysis of biodegradation resistant saturated and aromatic hydrocarbon molecular indicators of the Peace River oil-sands bitumen and surrounding oils revealed oil-charge from the Jurassic Gordondale (oil Family Z) in the west along the Montney and Gething formations, mixing with vertically migrated oil-charge from the Exshaw Formation east of the Debolt anhydrite facies pinch out. Most likely there is no significant Gordondale source contribution to the Exshaw source dominated Athabasca, Cold Lake and Lloydminster accumulations. The precursor oils to the Peace River, Athabasca, Buffalo Head Hills and Wabasca oil sands were the earliest expelled, lowest maturity petroleum from these source-rocks, with API gravities in the 20’s and with high initial viscosities. The complex vertical and lateral heterogeneity of fluid properties reflect variations in oil-charge maturity, migration pathways, and varying levels of biodegradation, conditioned by highly variable oil charging which explains why parts of the Peace River oil-sands fields are able to be cold produced whereas the dominantly Exshaw sourced oils are too highly degraded for cold production. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Methane emissions from upstream oil and gas production in Canada are underestimated Katlyn MacKay1,2*, Martin Lavoie1, Evelise Bourlon1, Emmaline Atherton1, Elizabeth O’Connell1, Jennifer Baillie1, Chelsea Fougère1 & David Risk1 Methane emissions were measured at 6650 sites across six major oil and gas producing regions in Canada to examine regional emission trends, and to derive an inventory estimate for Canada’s upstream oil and gas sector. Emissions varied by fuid type and geographic region, with the heavy oil region of Lloydminster ranking highest on both absolute and intensity-based scales. Emission intensities varied widely for natural gas production, where older, low-producing developments such as Medicine Hat, Alberta showed high emission intensities, and newer developments in Montney, British Columbia showed emission intensities that are amongst the lowest in North America. Overall, we estimate that the Canadian upstream oil and gas methane inventory is underestimated by a factor of 1.5, which is consistent with previous studies of individual regions. Reducing methane (CH 4) emissions from anthropogenic activities is a critical part of climate change mitigation 1 2 eforts . Although atmospheric CH4 concentrations are low (~ 1.8 ppm) , the warming potential of CH4 is 84 times higher than that of carbon dioxide over a 20-year timeframe 3, making it an immediate target for green- house gas (GHG) reductions. 4 Canada’s second most abundant greenhouse gas is CH4, making up 13% of national GHG emissions . In 2018, 4 43% of Canada’s anthropogenic CH 4 emissions originated from oil and gas systems . Te major sources of oil and gas CH4 emissions are from activities that occur during upstream production, which include venting (intentional releases; ~ 52%), incomplete combustion during faring (~ 1.4%), and fugitive emissions (unintentional releases from faulty equipment, or drilling; ~ 42%)4. -
