Questa analisi ci ha portato a confrontarci con molteplici aspetti convergenti e strettamente correlati: trend e sviluppi tecnologici, aspettative sociali, interazione tra gli attori coinvolti, esperienze sviluppate all’estero, livello di informazione e coinvolgimento della popolazione, spinte verso uno sviluppo sostenibile della società, la rapidità con cui le trasformazioni stanno prendendo corpo. E il punto di partenza è stato quello di delineare, all’interno di un Comitato Guida ispirato e ispiratore, un profilo condiviso del concetto di smart city, mettendolo poi a confronto con l’opinione di attori qualificati e del pubblico. La visione su cui poggia questa analisi è un modello urbano che assicuri elevati standard di qualità della vita per la crescita personale e sociale delle persone e delle imprese, grazie all’ottimizzazione sostenibile di risorse e spazi. A nostro parere è necessario che il Paese colga l’opportunità smart cities come uno stimolo all’avvio di un percorso progettuale e sistematico verso un’evoluzione necessaria, dando un’impronta tutta Italiana a questo cammino che tenga conto delle identità culturali, delle dimensioni, delle vocazioni e delle caratteristiche peculiari delle nostre città. Partendo da una visione per il futuro del nostro Paese, che metta a fattor comune progetti politici, economici e sociali, è fondamentale che le Istituzioni si impegnino a delineare una strategia di medio e lungo periodo che crei le basi fondanti per l’evoluzione e il cambiamento. Penso all’identificazione di obiettivi, priorità, aree di intervento, metodi per il monitoraggio, ruoli e responsabilità degli attori coinvolti, direzioni tecnologiche e indicazione di standard. Tutto ciò a supporto di un piano economico che favorisca adeguati investimenti e, di conseguenza, una ricaduta positiva sul sistema Paese, in termini di occupazione e di commesse. A valle di questa strategia è necessario definire come governare questa evoluzione, garantendo stabilità di indirizzo e di governance. 10 | Smart Cities in Italia: un'opportunità nello spirito del Rinascimento per una nuova qualità della vita Il modello che crediamo possa sostenere questa visione non può che essere quindi ampiamente partecipativo: gli attori sono molteplici (sia nel pubblico che nel privato) e la loro interazione deve essere concertata e stimolata, creando sinergie che ottimizzino gli investimenti che già oggi sono messi in campo da diversi enti. Senza dimenticare che l’evoluzione delle nostre città verso un modello smart non può prescindere da un profondo cambiamento

    chapter 8 The Rise of the Stampatore Camerale: Printers and Power in Early Sixteenth-Century Rome Paolo Sachet More than any other early modern power, the sixteenth-century Catholic Church is generally identified with a strict, if not reactionary policy towards printing. As part of its struggle against the Reformation, the papacy developed a vast and centralised system of ecclesiastical censorship. While it failed to be as universal as originally envisaged, it had serious ramifications on the culture of Catholic countries, beginning with Italy. An ever-growing number of studies is devoted to this subject, benefiting from the opening of the archive of the Roman Inquisition in 1998 and from the ground-breaking critical edition of the Indexes of Forbidden Books.1 By contrast, almost all of the Church’s attempts to harness printing as a means of communication in support of its own cause have been largely overlooked. This observation is especially true for the very heart of Catholicism, the city of Rome. In the capital of the Papal States, how- ever, cardinals and popes did employ local publishers to print an array of scholarly books to challenge Protestantism mostly in the patristic and histo- riographical fields. La crise économique est visible dans tout sa force; mais la crise intellectuelle, plus subtile, et qui, par sa nature, même, prend les apparences les plus trompeuses.1 (Paul Valéry, 1924) The future of old media Tucked away in the recesses of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice is a one-off Futurist periodical. The accumulated dust and lack of wear belie its significance. Entitled Arabau Barù (an idiosyncratic greeting used by the Venetian Futurists),2 the periodical was produced in Venice by local activists Renzo Bertozzi and Paolo Foscari to generate publicity on the eve of a musico-theatrical event at the city’s Teatro Goldoni on January 25, 1924. The publication marks a neglected moment in Futurism’s history. Styled as a four-page broadsheet, it exhibits the black and red text and typography favored by the Futurists (see Figure 1). The title typeface suggests both velocity and auditory volume: “Arabau” rises from a small to large font, and the letters of “Barù” are distributed on various horizontal lines, as if to suggest their transcription on a musical stave. The edition’s subtitle reads “argomento dei futuristi veneziani esce quando vuole e può” (Exposition of the Venetian Futurists, appearing when it wants to and can); inscribed in a vortical shape that resembles the electronic loudspeaker, it too suggests its sonic realization. In this essay, I argue that, at the onset of “modernity,” the exceptional nature and economic system of Livorno, together with the long-standing conception of Livornese Jews as commercially useful, contributed to the preservation of traditional structures and norms and prevented the full application of enlightened equalizing policies championed by the Tuscan government. Instead of furthering political integration, the deeply engrained “discourse of Jewish utility” encouraged the permanence of a widespread view of the Jews as an autonomous corporate collectivity protected by the continued benevolence of the sovereign.
