Executive Summary 4 The Wharton School, Communications Office University of Pennsylvania 319 Steinberg Hall - Dietrich Hall 3620 Locust Walk Philadelphia, PA 19104 Executive Summary This year, the Global Alumni Forum (GAF) was held for the first time in Italy’s financial center, Milan. The speeches of two high ranking Italian finance officials, the Minister of Economic Development, Corrado Passera, and Bank of Italy’s Governor, Ignazio Visco, coupled with the presentation of Wharton’s Professor of Finance Franklin Allen’s keynote resulted in the focus of our communications efforts highlighting the compelling timely topic of the Eurozone crisis, especially with the impending decision of Greece to decide on its loan options. As a result of this strategy, top media in Italy attended the event and covered these topics specifically mentioning Wharton’s event as the locale for these interviews and conversations. Our office achieved exposure for the GAF through pre‐event media interviews and on site media work that enabled reporters to take advantage of the GAF’s speaker list and faculty presence for on the spot coverage and encourage further interest. These interviews included spotlights with Dean Thomas Robertson, GAF Milan organizing committee members Federico Tejilla and Roberto Barzi, Carlyle Europe Managing Director and Wharton alumni Marco De Benedetti. Media interviews and placement In conjunction with Brunswick PR, our office managed over 20 interviews with various Wharton faculty, Wharton senior administration, GAF invitees and Wharton alumni speakers at the event. Interviews occurred with Milanese publications (Corriere della Sera, Milano Finanza) with Italian national print publications and broadcast outlets (Il Sole 24 Ore, RAI TG1 Economia, Radio 24 Focus Economia) and those with international reach (CNBC, SkyTG24.) It is with intention that the communications effort was focused on high-level finance/business based publications with quality interviews. Media placement for two types of stories (i.e. timely speaker reacted interviews as well as Wharton School focused alumni stories) was successful. To date, we have had approximately 15 GAF-related media placements. Knowledge@Wharton K@W editor Rachel Kipp attended the Forum and in addition to posting content to the K@W Twitter feed, wrote a piece for K@W today which was posted on May 17 (Creating a Sustainable European Economy.) A pre‐GAF piece with GAF keynote speaker Wharton Professor Franklin Allen appeared on May 11 (Will Francois Hollande Point Europe in a New Direction?). 5 2.

  • Managing Ecosystem Supply, Revenue-Sharing, and Platform Design
The Creator Economy: Managing Ecosystem Supply, Revenue-Sharing, and Platform Design Hemant K. Bhargava,∗y May 12, 2021 Forthcoming, Management Science Abstract Many digital platforms give users a bundle of goods sourced from numerous creators, generate revenue through consumption of these goods, and motivate creators by sharing of revenue. This paper studies the platform’s design choices and creators’ participation and supply decisions, when users’ (viewers’) consumption of goods (content) is financed by third-party advertisers. The model specifies the platform’s scale: number of creators and content supplied, and magnitudes of viewers, advertisers, and revenues. I examine how the distribution of creator capabilities affects market concentration among creators, and how it can be influenced by platform design. Tools for ad management and analytics will be more impactful when the platform has sufficient content and viewers but has low ad demand. Conversely, reducing viewers’ distaste for ads through better matching and timing—which can create win-win-win effects throughout the ecosystem—is important when the platform has strong demand from advertisers. Platform in- frastructure improvements that motivate creators to supply more content (e.g., development toolkits) must be chosen carefully to avoid creating higher concentration among a few powerful creators. Investments in first-party content are most consequential when the platform scale is small and when it has greater urgency to attract more viewers. I show that revenue-sharing is (only partly) a tug of war between the platform and creators, because a moderate sharing formula will strengthen the overall ecosystem and profits of all participants. However, revenue-sharing tensions indi- cate a need to extend the one- rate-for-all creators approach with richer revenue-sharing arrangements that can better accommodate heterogeneity among creators.

  • Incontro Su Tav, Il Comunicato Del Governo

  • Printers and Power in Early Sixteenth-Century Rome
chapter 8 The Rise of the Stampatore Camerale: Printers and Power in Early Sixteenth-Century Rome Paolo Sachet More than any other early modern power, the sixteenth-century Catholic Church is generally identified with a strict, if not reactionary policy towards printing. As part of its struggle against the Reformation, the papacy developed a vast and centralised system of ecclesiastical censorship. While it failed to be as universal as originally envisaged, it had serious ramifications on the culture of Catholic countries, beginning with Italy. An ever-growing number of studies is devoted to this subject, benefiting from the opening of the archive of the Roman Inquisition in 1998 and from the ground-breaking critical edition of the Indexes of Forbidden Books.1 By contrast, almost all of the Church’s attempts to harness printing as a means of communication in support of its own cause have been largely overlooked. This observation is especially true for the very heart of Catholicism, the city of Rome. In the capital of the Papal States, how- ever, cardinals and popes did employ local publishers to print an array of scholarly books to challenge Protestantism mostly in the patristic and histo- riographical fields. As I have illustrated elsewhere, these innovative attempts took place long before the establishment of the Typographia Vaticana in 1587.2 1 To cite only the most relevant contributions, see Gigliola Fragnito, La Bibbia al rogo: la cen sura ecclesiastica e i volgarizzamenti della Scrittura (1471–1605) (Bologna: Il Mulino, 1997), as well as her Proibito capire: la Chiesa e il volgare nella prima età moderna (Bologna: Il Mulino, 2005); Vittorio Frajese, Nascita dell’Indice: la censura ecclesiastica dal Rinascimento alla Controriforma (Brescia: Morcelliana, 2006); Peter Godman, The Saint as Censor: Robert Bellarmine between Inquisition and Index (Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2000); Ugo Rozzo, La lette ratura italiana negli Indici del Cinquecento (Udine: Forum, 2005).

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles “Wanna Get Boba?”: The Bond Between Boba and Asian American Youth in San José, California A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Asian American Studies by Talitha Angelica Acaylar Trazo 2020 © Copyright by Talitha Angelica Acaylar Trazo 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS “Wanna Get Boba?”: The Bond Between Boba and Asian American Youth in San José, California by Talitha Angelica Acaylar Trazo Master of Arts in Asian American Studies University of California, Los Angeles 2020 Professor Victor Bascara, Chair The tenth largest city in the United States with a population of over 1 million, San José, California resides on the southernmost edge of the Silicon Valley. Though high-tech narratives often subsume this region, a closer examination of San José’s (sub)urban landscape reveals the presence of over 100 boba shops and their multiethnic community of local patrons. Boba, a milk tea beverage which originated in Taiwan in the 1980s, made its U.S. debut in the late 1990s when Taiwanese American entrepreneurs aimed to emulate Taiwan’s unique boba shop experience in their American hometowns. Over the past 20 years, boba within the United States has morphed into a distinctly Asian American cultural phenomenon, which I argue makes boba a unique lens by which to examine Asian American youth culture. For this ethnographic study, I conducted and analyzed 17 interviews and 156 survey responses from Bay Area-based young adults (between the ages of 18 and 40) with varying degrees of familiarity with San José boba ii shops: from the occasional boba drinker to what some may call the “boba addict.” I opened the survey to all racial groups but focused my data analysis on those who self-identified as Asian American.

  • Futurism in Venice, Crisis and “La Musica Dell'avvenire,” 1924*
The future of old media Tucked away in the recesses of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice is a one-off Futurist periodical. The accumulated dust and lack of wear belie its significance. Entitled Arabau Barù (an idiosyncratic greeting used by the Venetian Futurists),2 the periodical was produced in Venice by local activists Renzo Bertozzi and Paolo Foscari to generate publicity on the eve of a musico-theatrical event at the city’s Teatro Goldoni on January 25, 1924. The publication marks a neglected moment in Futurism’s history. Styled as a four-page broadsheet, it exhibits the black and red text and typography favored by the Futurists (see Figure 1). The title typeface suggests both velocity and auditory volume: “Arabau” rises from a small to large font, and the letters of “Barù” are distributed on various horizontal lines, as if to suggest their transcription on a musical stave. The edition’s subtitle reads “argomento dei futuristi veneziani esce quando vuole e può” (Exposition of the Venetian Futurists, appearing when it wants to and can); inscribed in a vortical shape that resembles the electronic loudspeaker, it too suggests its sonic realization. Slogans are scattered across the page: to the left is the play on words “Marciare, non marcire” (March, don’t rot), taken from the 1915 manifesto “Il teatro futurista sintetico;” this is mirrored by “Tutto il futurismo!?!” to the right.3 *There are many people I would like to thank for their encouragement, support, and advice in the completion of this article: above all, Roger Parker, and also Tamsin Alexander, Ross Cole, Kate Guthrie, Katherine Hambridge, Axel Körner, Emanuele Senici, Francesca Vella, and Gavin Williams.
