Abstract Altogether 37 predatory mite species from 14 families (Parasitiformes and Acariformes) were collected using leaf sampling and pit-fall trapping in strawberry fi elds (1997 - 2001). Thirty- six were recorded on strawberries for the fi rst time in Latvia. Two species, Paragarmania mali (Oud.) (Aceosejidae) and Eugamasus crassitarsis (Hal.) (Parasitidae) were new for the fauna of Latvia. The most abundant predatory mite families (species) collected from strawberry leaves were Phytoseiidae (Amblyseius cucumeris Oud., A. aurescens A.-H., A. bicaudus Wainst., A. herbarius Wainst.) and Anystidae (Anystis baccarum L.); from pit-fall traps – Parasitidae (Poecilochirus necrophori Vitz. and Parasitus lunaris Berl.), Aceosejidae (Leioseius semiscissus Berl.) and Macrochelidae (Macrocheles glaber Müll). Introduction Predatory mites play an important ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems and they are increasingly being used in management for biocontrol of pest mites, thrips and nematodes (Easterbrook 1992; Wright, Chambers 1994; Croft et al. 1998; Cuthbertson et al. 2003). Many of these mites have a major infl uence on nutrient cycling, as they are predators on other arthropods (Santos 1985; Karg 1993; Koehler 1999). In total, investigations of mite fauna in Latvia were made by Grube (1859), who found 28 species, Eglītis (1954) – 50 species, Kuznetsov and Petrov (1984) – 85 species, Lapiņa (1988) – 207 species, and Salmane (2001) – 247 species. -

The association between domatia-bearing plants and mites has been proposed to be mutualistic, and has been found to be important in species of economic value, such as grapes, cotton, avocado and coffee. This is because leaf domatia affect the distribution, diversity and abundance of predatory and mycophagous mites found on the leaf surface. As a result, plants are thought to benefit from increased defence against pathogens and small arthropod herbivores. This study assesses the relative diversity and composition of mites on an economically important plant host (Coffea aribica) in comparison to mites found in a neighbouring indigenous forest in South Africa. Our results showed that the coffee plantations were associated with only predatory mites, some of which are indigenous to South Africa. This indicates that coffee plantations are able to be successfully colonised by indigenous beneficial mites. -

We examined the fauna inhabiting the leaves and small stems that compose the outermost canopy of Australian rainforests, and found them inhabited by an abundant and diverse fa~a of mi~es (Acari), including scavenging-fungivores (especially oribatid mites), predators, and pl~t-parasItes .. Foliar mite species diversity and abundance was highest on structurally complex leaves, espeCIally those With leaf domatia or erect tomenta. Tropical rainforest trees with hairs on their leaves averaged nearly three times as many species and five times as many individuals as those with smooth leaves. Some mite species were restricted to each leaf type. Subtropical rainforest trees and lianas with leaf domatia had twice as many species and three times as many mites as those on which domatia were blocked with bitumen paint. Pattems ofmite abundance and diversity persisted through time with both foliar and stem-inhabiting mites increasing in abundance from the summer-rainy season through the autumn and winter dry periods. Oribatid mites also dominated the stem fauna, but the species composition on stems differed from that on leaves. Species turnover was high between samples within a tree, between tree species, and among sites for both leaf and stem mites, suggesting that the overall contribution of mites to canopy biodiversity is high. -

Baardsen6, Jose Francisco Lima-Barbero 7,8, Shira Gal9, Efrat Gavish-Regev 10, Yuval Gottlieb11, Lise Roy 12, Eitan Recht13, Marine El Adouzi12 & Eric Palevsky9 Because of its ability to expedite specimen identifcation and species delineation, the barcode index number (BIN) system presents a powerful tool to characterize hyperdiverse invertebrate groups such as the Acari (mites). However, the congruence between BINs and morphologically recognized species has seen limited testing in this taxon. We therefore apply this method towards the development of a barcode reference library for soil, poultry litter, and nest dwelling mites in the Western Palearctic. Through analysis of over 600 specimens, we provide DNA barcode coverage for 35 described species and 70 molecular taxonomic units (BINs). Nearly 80% of the species were accurately identifed through this method, but just 60% perfectly matched (1:1) with BINs. High intraspecifc divergences were found in 34% of the species examined and likely refect cryptic diversity, highlighting the need for revision in these taxa. These fndings provide a valuable resource for integrative pest management, but also highlight the importance of integrating morphological and molecular methods for fne-scale taxonomic resolution in poorly-known invertebrate lineages. DNA barcoding1 alleviates many of the challenges associated with morphological specimen identifcation by comparing short, standardized fragments of DNA – typically 648 bp of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene for animals – to a well-curated reference library. -
