BARBARA BAIN Born in Chicago on September 13th, Barbara Bain graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology before relocating to New York City. Once there, Bain found gainful employment as a high fashion model and explored her life-long love of dance by studying with Martha Graham, master of American modern dance. Further exploring her interest in the arts, Bain began her acting training in the private class of the most famous and respected of all acting teachers, Lee Strasberg. After a successful audition, she accepted an invitation to become a member of his legendary The Actors Studio. Bain toured with the road company of Paddy Chayefsky's Middle of the Night, a tour which landed her in Los Angeles, and not long thereafter Bain found work on some of the most popular television shows of the day. She appeared opposite Larry Hagman in United Artists' Harbormaster and with Darrin McGavin in the popular Mike Hammer series. Perhaps her first real big break came, however, when she was cast in the recurring role of Karen Wells, love interest of David Janssen, in the seminal private-eye series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Bain continued to work steadily, appearing in numerous television series: Tightrope, The Law and Mr. Jones, Straightaway and Adventures in Paradise. She also had the opportunity to flex her comedy skills in one of the most memorable episodes of the classic The Dick Van Dyke Show, created by Carl Reiner. In the episode "Will You Two Be My Wife," Bain turned in a hilarious performance as "Dorie-doo," a blonde bombshell with whom Van Dyke must break-up in order to marry the ever-perky Mary Tyler Moore. -

Kieler Beiträge zur Filmmusikforschung, 5.4, 2011 // 623 Die Beach-Party-Filme (1963-1968) Zusammengestellt von Katja Bruns und James zu Hüningen Inhalt: Alphabetisches Verzeichnis der Filme Chronologisches Verzeichnis der Filme Literatur Als Beach Party Movies bezeichnet man ein kleines Genre von Filmen, das sich um die Produktionen der American International Pictures (AIP) versammelt. Zwar gab es eine Reihe von Vorläufern – zuallererst ist die Columbia-Produktion GIDGET aus dem Jahre 1959 zu nennen (nach einem Erfolgsroman von Frederick Kohner), in dem Sandra Dee als Surferin aufgetreten war –, doch beginnt die kurze Erfolgsgeschichte des Genres erst mit BEACH PARTY (1963), einer AIP-Produktion, die einen ebenso unerwarteten wie großen Kassenerfolg hatte. AIP hatte das Grundmuster der Gidget-Filme kopiert, die Geschichte um diverse Musiknummern angereichert, die oft auch als performances seinerzeit populärer Bands im Film selbst szenisch ausgeführt wurden, und die Darstellerinnen in zahlreichen Bikini-Szenen ausgestellt (exponierte männliche Körper traten erst in den Surfer-Szenen etwas später hinzu). Das AIP-Konzept spekulierte auf einen primär jugendlichen Kreis von Zuschauern, weshalb – anders, als noch in der GIDGET-Geschichte – die Rollen der Eltern und anderer Erziehungsberechtigter deutlich zurückgenommen wurden. Allerdings spielen die Auseinandersetzungen mit Eltern, vor allem das Erlernen eines selbstbestimmten Umgangs mit der eigenen Sexualität in allen Filmen eine zentrale dramatische Rolle. Dass die Jugendlichen meist in peer groups auftreten und dass es dabei zu Rang- oder Machtkämpfen kommt, tritt dagegen ganz zurück. Es handelte sich ausschließlich um minimal budgetierte Filme, die on location vor allem an den Stränden Kaliforniens (meist am Paradise Cove) aufgenommen wurden; später kamen auch Aufnahmen auf Hawaii und an anderen berühmten Surfer-Stränden zustande. -

Disability and Music
th nd 19 November to 22 December UKDHM 2018 will focus on Disability and Music. We want to explore the links between the experience of disablement in a world where the barriers faced by people with impairments can be overwhelming. Yet the creative impulse, urge for self expression and the need to connect to our fellow human beings often ‘trumps’ the oppression we as disabled people have faced, do face and will face in the future. Each culture and sub-culture creates identity and defines itself by its music. ‘Music is the language of the soul. To express ourselves we have to be vibrating, radiating human beings!’ Alasdair Fraser. Born in Salford in 1952, polio survivor Alan Holdsworth goes by the stage name ‘Johnny Crescendo’. His music addresses civil rights, disability pride and social injustices, making him a crucial voice of the movement and one of the best-loved performers on the disability arts circuit. In 1990 and 1992, Alan co- organised Block Telethon, a high-profile media and community campaign which culminated in the demise of the televised fundraiser. His albums included Easy Money, Pride and Not Dead Yet, all of which celebrate disabled identity and critique disabling barriers and attitudes. Specifically, this study attempts to establish a logical expansion and adaptation of Bale’s Four-Stage Ideal-type on the Evolution of the Modern English Soccer Stadium appropriate for the history of professional baseball and football and that predicts future changes in American sport facilities. In essence, it is the author’s intention to provide a more coherent and comprehensive account of the evolving professional baseball and football sport facility and where it appears to be headed. This investigation concludes eight stages exist concerning the evolution of the professional baseball and football sport facility. Stages one through four primarily appeared before the beginning of the 20th century and existed as temporary structures which were small and cheaply built. Stages five and six materialize as the first permanent professional baseball and football facilities. Stage seven surfaces as a multi-purpose facility which attempted to accommodate both professional football and baseball equally. -

THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s. -

Biography -- Printable Version Peter Wolf's Historical Biography Written & Researched by Bryan Wiser, and Sheila Warren with Mimi Fox. Born in New York City, Peter grew up in the Bronx during the mid-1950's in a small, three-room apartment where he lived with his parents, older sister, two cats, dog and parakeet. For some time, Peter lived with his grandmother, an actress in New York City's Yiddish Theater. She and Peter had a strong bond, and she affectionately named him "Little Wolf" for his energetic and rambunctious ways. His father was a musician, vaudevillian and singer of light opera. Like Peter did years later, his father left home at age fourteen to join the Schubert Theater Touring Company with which he traveled the country performing light operas such as The Student Prince and Merry Widow. He had his own radio show called The Boy Baritone, which featured new songs from Tin Pan Alley, and was a member of the Robert Shaw Chorale. As a result of such artistic pursuits, Peter's father underwent long periods of unemployment that created a struggle to make financial ends meet. Peter's mother was an elegant and attractive woman who taught inner-city children in the South Bronx for 27 years. A political activist, union organizer and staunch civil rights advocate, she supported racial equality by attending many of the southern "freedom rides" and marches. Peter's older sister was also a teacher as well as a photographer who now works as an advocate for persons with disabilities. She continues her mother's tradition, often marching on Washington to support the rights of the disabled. -
