Received: 10 February 2012; in revised form: 1 March 2012 / Accepted: 7 March 2012 / Published: 21 March 2012 Abstract: Of the more than 300 species of Psocoptera described in North America, 44 species have been documented on eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carrière, in the southern Appalachians. However, the distribution and co-occurrence patterns of these species throughout the tree canopy are unknown. This study was initiated to evaluate specimen abundance, species richness and species composition among three designated strata in the canopy of eastern hemlock, assess species for vertical stratification patterns, and determine if co-occurrence patterns of Psocoptera species are random or non-random. During this study, 27 species representing 18 genera and 10 families were evaluated. -

— The Psocoptera of Indiana Edward L. Mockford, Indianapolis, Indiana The published records of psocids from Indiana testify to the fact that the order has been much neglected in the state. I know of no published records before those of Chapman (2) which include only two species Lachesilla major Chapman and Amphigerontia petiolata (Banks). Since then Sommerman (4) listed records of four additional species of Lachesilla. From June, 1944, to October, 1950, I have found 57 species of psocids in Indiana. Doubtless additional collecting, especially in the extreme southern part of the state, would add a few species to this number, but in view of the dearth of information it seems advisable to publish my records together with some general notes at this time. The classification used in this paper is that of Pearman (3), but group names (group is above family) are omitted to save space and the family name Lachesillidae is used instead of Pterodelidae as Ptero- dela is a synonym of Lachesilla. I also follow Pearman in the use of the ordinal name, Psocoptera, although most American authors use the name Corrodentia. I am using several of the genera into which the old genus Psocus has been split, on the basis of wing venational peculiarities correlating with definite types of genitalia in both sexes. These genera include Cerastipsocus Kolbe, Amphigerontia Kolbe, Trichadenotecnum Enderlein, and Loensia Enderlein. The species left in Psocus still form groups, however, and some of these may warrant generic distinction. The species in large genera are here listed alphabetically despite their grouping tendencies. The order Psocoptera is an ancient one, already well differentiated and represented in the Permian. -

Nymphs appear dark gray and pale banded between abdominal segments. Nymphs are very gregarious, clustering together in a "herd" on the bark. They appear in the spring (April) and are also considered harmless to the trees they live on. Life Cycle: Eggs of psocids are laid singly or in clusters and are sometimes covered with silk or debris. Nymphs hatching from eggs resemble tiny wingless adults. Most species develop through six stages (instars). Bark lice are gregarious and live together Barklice underneath layers of silken webbing. Barklice feed on fungi, algae, dead plant tissues and other debris. Consequently, they are considered harmless and perhaps beneficial to the trees they infest. Barklice first appear in the spring. However by late summer, silken webbing produced by Archipsocus nomas Gurney, can completely wrap a large tree from the base of the trunk to the tips of the branches. -

En este art´ıculo probamos la congruencia de tres evidencias de divergencia (i.e. dos f´osilesy una biogeogr´afica),y discutimos la correlaci´onentre la edad de los clados y otros mayores eventos (e.g. geol´ogicos,ecol´ogicos).Encontramos que la familia Psocidae probablemente divergi´odurante la transici´onMesozoico-Paleozoico. Adem´as, las subsecuentes ramificaciones se los sub-linajes mayores ocurri´oen un corto tiempo entre 68 y 77 My. Estas fechas tambi´encorresponden con los cambios de diversificaci´onen m´ultiples linajes de angiospermas y el incremento en la temperatura global. Rondeau Provincial Park Species List
RONDEAU PROVINCIAL PARK INSECT SPECIES LIST The following list was generated from the University of Guelph Insect Collection computer database on 5 October 2009 and compiles the 1728 taxa found in Rondeau Provincial Park that have identified material deposited in the Guelph collection. The majority of this material was collected and identified during a survey in 2003 but historical material and material collected after 2003 were included to compile this list. The Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) and Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) were not a focus of the study and more complete lists of species that occur in Rondeau Provincial Park may be available from the Rondeau Provincial Park naturalists. For further information please contact Dr. Stephen Marshall (information available from the University of Guelph Insect Collection website). The development of this list was supported by Ontario Parks (with special thanks to Sandy Dobbyn). Orders are arranged taxonomically. All families, genera and species are arranged alphabetically. Further information can be found at: http://icp3.phthiraptera.org/ A number of workers on Psocoptera (Kevin Johnson, Kazunori Yoshizawa, Emilie Bess) are currently planning on attending this Congress. These meetings might provide a valuable opportunity for workers in Psocoptera to meet together in conjunction with the meeting, as well as provide more interaction with those working in Phthiraptera (Psocodea more broadly). Vince Smith is planning a workshop on taxonomic databases with a web interface in conjunction with the meeting, and the possibility exists that this workshop could also include databases for Psocoptera. Those who may be interested in attending ICP3 and also being part of meeting up with other Psocopterists should contact Kevin Johnson ([email protected]), who will assemble a list of interested parties and provide further correspondence regarding the overall level of interest among Psocopterists.
